#tbt 13 Deering Street, Portland was built in 1867, just after the Great Fire that devastated much of Portland’s peninsula. In its 150‑year history, the house has been owned by only four families. The first owner was John N. Lord, a “boot and shoe jobber” with the company Lord, Haskell & Co. In 1891, Lord, Haskell & Co. merged with the A. H. Berry Shoe Co. and John Lord became President of A. H. Berry. The consolidated firm was so successful it required a large five‑story building on Middle Street.
In 1916, John Lord’s daughter Nellie sold the house to Pearl E. Brown. Pearl’s husband Dr. Luther Brown was a physician who had his office in the house for many years. In 1920, Luther and Pearl lived here with their daughter and a live‑in servant. In 1940, the household included Luther, Pearl, daughter Ruth. The Browns owned the house until 1962.
In 1962, Dr. Brown sold the house to Roxanne Mooradian, who ran a hair salon on the first floor for many years. At some point the rest of the house was divided into two apartments. Roxanne and her husband owned the building until 2006, when the present owner bought it. The house had seen years of neglect, insensitive repairs, suspended ceilings, and layers of ugly linoleum but the new owners knew the house could be magnificent once again and took on the challenge. The owners worked with Papi & Romano, a Portland builder known for their high‑quality work on historic properties.
