Last night I read an article about mindfulness and meditation practices not being approved or accepted by some cultural groups. This morning I was reminded of the importance of meditation while instructing over 150 youth. This is the third year I’ve taught this group. Afterwards a youth who has been with me all three years of this class approached and shared a beautiful story. He told me how he had a major surgery at the beginning of the school year and the recovery was brutal. He went on to say that he remembered the meditation and breath practices he’s learned in class and how they helped him to remain stable and still through his recovery. His exact words at the end were, “Thank you for teaching me how to meditate and breathe. There’s definitely something to it all.” This all served as a reminder of why I do what I do. ❤️

1) What do you love about yoga?
Baptiste yoga is one of very few intensive physical activities I have ever been able to commit to on a daily basis because the practice is so much more than physical– as we like to say, it’s not about the poses. The peace I find every time I practice, & the peace and presence that I carry off of my mat and into my life, and into the lives of others, provide a continuous reminder of the transformational nature of this practice.
2) How would you describe your teaching style?
I have been called “high energy” more than a few times in my life. I also have a background in public speaking– even before yoga, public speaking had a way of centering me. I have always been fully present when speaking in front of a group of people, and as my practice evolves, I become more and more present in each asana. I bring that presence, and all of my energy (and the nature of that changes every day!) to each class I teach.
3) What makes Core special?
Core is possibility. The day I walked in, it was a yoga studio. Today, it is my second home. The community we have at Core empowers each person who walks through our front door to explore the space, themselves and their practice. If you just want a place to come practice hot yoga with seriously good people, great! If you want a family, we’ll welcome you with open arms. If you desire transformation, we’ll help you find your way.
4) Favorite pose or poses? Why?
My favorite pose is Tree. Again, possibility. Each time I practice this asana is different. It’s an incredible heart opener when you bring your biceps and shoulders behind your ears, opening your chest to the front wall. Various poses bring up different emotions for different yogis, and some of my most powerful insights have come in Tree.
5) What are your favorite things outside of yoga?
I’m a full time student studying political science and economics at UMKC, and I’m an avid newspaper reader. I enjoy philosophy. I love music– especially EDM (electronic dance music), punk and emo rap. Anything outside, especially hiking and running.
Grateful to be a part of the @yogarajwla family, for the opportunity to connect with the amazing souls that walk through these doors, and I’m especially grateful to share my love for yoga with the teachers and students here, they truly keep me inspired. THANK YOU!!! 🧘🏽♀️🙏🏽♥️🎄 #happyholidays#yogaraj#yoga#yogafam#yogateachers

I feel like a warrior today taking on the challenge of @3hofoundation #wintersolsticesadhana
For a week on tenting in the Florida sun (please pray for sun and warmth). It’s been 15 years since I’ve been to this week of yoga which includes 3 full days of meditation. I think I’m about to have my a$$ handed to me in the form of sore muscles, but I know I will be glad I did it! .
Time for some exciting news....
Over the last month I’ve been working on designing and making Yoga Consent Tokens.
As a yoga teacher I wanted a way for students to communicate if they were happy with hands on assistance. I started looking for existing consent markers in the UK but only found companies in the US. I didn’t fancy paying all the extra costs for shipping so decided to make my own.
Pictured is one of the final designs, laser engraved on plywood. They are reversible with ‘No hands on assists thanks’ on the back.
I’m just getting started on this, so would love to know if you are interested. If you would like to know more, and see some more pictures you can visit:
www.yogaconsenttokens.co.uk or go to the link in my bio.
