I dont often talk about Patanjali much anymore but these Sutras spoken are still my favourite to sit with and will always be one of my favourite sounds. Atha Yogānuśāsanam. Now the Exposition of Yoga is being made. Yogaś citta vrtti nirodhah. The restraint of the modification of the mind-stuff is Yoga. Tadā drastuh svarūpe vasthānam. Then the seer (self) abides in its own nature. Book 1 Yoga Sutras of Patanjai. The first three Sutras are probably the most important for at least one reason. They are relatively easy to understand. The most useful spiritual discipline will be unique to each individual. The most resonate advice I have read came from a devote Aghori Vimalananda. He believed that each individual should carve out his own niche: "study what he or she could understand. Select those practices which they could sincerely do, and do them faithfully." My yoga is changing and in another way is regressing to when all I cared for was the consolations of philosophy for my heart.. I feel that again and I welcome it home...... however words without action are just that. Also on mala beads, these were about 10 cents from a merchant. Mala beads will not make you a more practised yogi if you dont use them, I remember thinking once that I needed precious stones like that would make me a better yogi. I bought them and they never really had any true value to me, This set are one of the most valuable things I own, for the time, love and devotion I have spent with them.

I cannot wait to dive into this book. So many people tell me that they cannot do yoga because it is boring. I have never had that problem. In so many ways, yoga saved my life. Like I said yesterday, I am no stranger to stress and anxiety. Over the last three years, my mat has been one of the few places that my mind is FREE. Free of the lists, stress, and anxiety. When I step on my mat, all of my struggles magically melt away and I can just focus on me and on my breath. When I go more than a week without my practice, I feel it mind, body, and soul. 
Yoga is about so much more than the postures. Asana is only one of the 8 limbs of yoga. Did you know that? Yoga is not only about the time spent on your mat, it is a way of living. Bringing more yoga and the peace that comes with it into my life off the mat is the main reason I signed up for a 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training.  I cannot wait to dive into the Sutras. 🧘‍♀️ .

Literally get up right away and dance around, turn some music on and sing your heart out, go for a nice walk around the park down the street, swing your hair around in the air like a rockstar... I dont care how you do it but just Move and get your heart rate up and your body moving. 💫🤸🏻‍♀️💃🏻🙏

Patanjali uses the term ‘dharana’ which is a Sanskrit term. This can be translated as concentration or aptitude of directing the mind in one direction and staying there. It can also be translated as discipline of attention. Desikachar explains that dharana is only one step away from the seventh limb dhyana which is contemplation or meditation. Dharana is a necessary requirement without which meditation would not be possible. Desikachar uses the image of a large reservoir of water used by farmers for watering their fields. There are many channels going in different directions to water the plants. Each has the same depth as all others. However, if one channel runs deeper than the others, more water flows through it. And this is what we do in dharana where we focus our mind on one single object to the exclusion of others. With this we create a mental channel which runs much deeper than others.

If you remember the previous limb pratyahara, you know this was the result of turning our senses inwards. With this we have stopped following noises, smells and other sensory influences that might inhibit our meditative practice. Whilst it is important for our meditative practice to turn inward we are usually still left with a mental chatter. We have decreased our attention to present sensual stimuli but might still contemplating things from the past or future. There might be thoughts about things we have to do, things that did not go well in the past which we find difficult to forget or worries about the future. Dharana is the discipline to tame those thoughts and exclude them, so we can fully focus on the chosen object of our meditation. This is by no means an easy process, but it needs to be mastered to be able to meditate.

Virabhadrasana 1/ Pranayama .

Pranayama is the fourth limb of the 8 limbs of yoga from the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Pranayama is the movement of energy through breath. 🌬 Breathing in and out through the nose activates it counter part, the nervous system. 🌀 The mind directly affects the breath and the breath directly affects the mind. That means if I can change the quality of my breath, I can change my experience. ✨👁✨

I believe you are integrated when you are connected with your breath. 🕸 Looking through my notes, I was reintroduced to my main goal in life, to be integrated 💯% of the time!! 🙌 To live in the moment 💕 to be present. 😊. And you know what they say, ”If you can change the quality of your breath, you can change the quality of your mind!” 🧠 I do this by practicing a pranayama technique throughout the day. I practice 3-part breathe when watching TV, talking to someone, reading, even while writing this post. Practicing pranayama techniques allows me to slow down and become a witness to the moment I am in rather than reacting. It’s amazing how we are so used to being in autopilot we forget we are not connected to our breath, our life force! ⚡️ I also practice pranayama techniques when I meditate or practice asanas. Adding pranayama to these practices helps to change the quality of my mind and connect to my true self, the stillness within. 💕🌬🧘‍♀️💯💕

Is it a person who pushes you beyond what you perceive as your limit? Is it a person who truly sees you? Is it a person who honors your path and give your tools for your own empowerment ?

This is how I see it. When I get caught in my thoughts 💭, my gripes, my fears, my irritations, my high-octane dreams, she pulls me back to the ground.

When I feel lost, she finds me.
.
I don’t know how she does what she does, but the magic that she is, and I know it is a magic, is a great power that is uniquely hers. And that I admire very much. She is my Yoga Teaching mentor, and my Polarity Therapy Teacher, and I’m lucky to say my friend. .
I hope you will be as lucky as me to learn directly from her in this life. @ishtayoga

I have to re-learn the power of the simple word NO. I’m such a people pleaser, I put myself the last most of the times and then I struggle internally being mad at myself. These are not yoga photos! I mean they are photos of me one freezing cold morning in our newly decorated lounge (no clutter) trying to get photos of me performing yoga postures for our web site, I was saying to kirsto 'but this isn't yoga, this is just showing what people think yoga should look like'.
I remember what @gemma_skells_yoga taught me in my brief encounter with her, not to go on about what yoga isn't but to share what it is!.
I'm now coming to the end of my first real block of teaching yoga, and that is exactly what I have tried to do. Patanjalis second sutra says" the restraint of the modifications of the mindstuff is yoga" so if you can control the mind into ripples this is yoga. So as a new  teacher this is exactly what I aim to share with my students.So our focus is not to form a perfect shape in a routine or mechanical way, but to feel fully into what the body is experiencing without judgment, to stay with their breath with interest and freshness, to feel part of and supported by the the wonderful universe . When these things are happening the minds chatter does indeed dissolve into ripples and stillness, this may be brief but it can happen during your first class or when you're years into practicing. It can happen standing, sitting, balancing, or upside down, you just need to show up to the mat. The practice is both the route to and the result. So this stillness is available to all!  I still have so much to learn and so much space to grow, love light and thanks to those who have shown up so far and those who have showed interest to practice in the future!

Today I completed my Usui Reiki Shoden with the amazing Theresa at Crystal Cottage. Ready to close out this year with a 21 day cleanse, moving out the old stale energies and coming back to knowing myself in 2019. This means more learning, more spiritual practice, and I hate to use the S word, but yes more self care! 🧘🏻‍♀️🥰

After thousands of times chanting to Patanjali before practice, many of us can feel at one with the intention of this wise being, who may have been more than one person. Nobody knows for sure. All I know is that the words of the Sutras and the intention in the chant resonate more over time, and that this is my favorite visual depiction of their source. .

I’m learning to chant the yoga sutras from @sadhanainthecity who has been (very) patiently teaching me. It’s a nice way to wind up morning practice and get set for the day.  I’m only up to 23 (but who’s counting (besides me lol)). 📷 by @sadhanainthecity who caught me in my favorite blanket (sort of a Linus situation, I’m afraid). I know I was feeling quite wiped - it’s been a long week- so this little bubble of calm was like manna to me.
