This leaf is a perfect representation of the true beauty of yoga ♡ On Thursday, I experienced an opportunity of a life time. I got to chat with five amazing yoga teachers, five amazing women about their yoga teaching career. We talked about everything from yoga therapy, to yoga healing, to their favorite part of yoga. Yoga and other slow moving meditation aspects may be what we are missing in our country for mental health. We are so focused on the outside look, that many of us forgot about the inner part (what yoga is all about.) I reached out to these ladies for a project and it turned out to be my most favorite, first but not last, talk I have conducted in my life so far. I built new relationships , I have new connections and I now know that my thought of integrating yoga with counseling is not a dream but a real thing that can be achieved.

Feeling trapped by your emotions?

We all will feel overwhelmed by situations in our lives occasionally and if we don't learn to release these feelings they accumulate over time leading to heavier feelings such as anxiety or depression.

How do we stop this cycle?
Accept how you are feeling in the moment. When an unpleasant emotion arises, don't run from it, rather move into it, become comfortable with observing the feeling. Ask yourself, where is the feeling in your body? Describe the feeling and see if you can change the texture of the feeling in some way.

With acceptance of how you feel you will find your fear resides and with that emerges a lessening of the intensity.

Remember to breathe. 🙏

We all will feel overwhelmed by situations in our lives occasionally and if we don't learn to release these feelings they accumulate over time leading to heavier feelings such as anxiety or depression. How do we stop this cycle? Accept how you are feeling in the moment. When an unpleasant emotion arises, don't run from it, rather move into it, become comfortable with observing the feeling. Ask yourself, where is the feeling in your body? Describe the feeling and see if you can change the texture of the feeling in some way. With acceptance of how you feel you will find your fear resides and with that emerges a lessening of the intensity. Although meditation was the last thing I wanted to do, deep down I knew it was my only way to salvation. Like many of you, I resisted meditation because I thought it was about clearing the mind. And to me, that was fucking impossible! But as @avajohanna so eloquently wrote, “Meditation isn’t about clearing the mind. It’s about exploring your head as a visitor, curious at every thought vision or story that plays on the movie screen that is your mind” ✨ Once I learned to dance with my thoughts, I discovered that they don’t define WHO I TRULY AM.

Thoughts come & go like the ocean waves, but the essence of WHO YOU ARE will never change. You’re so much more than the compilation of your thoughts. Even if it’s for 10 minutes a day, close your eyes & connect with your breath. As thoughts come & go, explore them with curiosity. Notice their origin in the mind & body. With each passing exhale, challenge them by returning your awareness to the present moment -  your breath, body or sounds around you - and ask yourself, “WHO AM I?” You’ll realize that you’re not defined by your mental health disorder. You are love, courage & interconnectedness 💗 This is your True Self.

I wrote the transliteration to be a printable one page guide for students at the time, offering an introductory, practical understanding of some of these useful guidances. I edit it from time to time as I have more clarity in meaning and articulation, yet for the most part it remains the same.

#aparigraha – non-hording – sharing, not holding on to more than you need

2018 has been a tough year for many of us - especially my fellow Taureans.  On my birthday this year, I had an accident that led to a major spiritual awakening experience that has changed my life.  #Healing over the past 7 years has not been easy and the last 6 months have sucked.  From mood swings, to crying spells, to an increase in sensitivities and re-emerging #intuitveskills, the Universe literally knocked me on my ass to take a much needed time out. Meditation and yoga have been my medicine.

I learned #meditation over 15 years ago as part of my #psychology training but it didn't quite take.  #mindfulness was not enough to help my patients at #BellevueHospital who were diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder, Bipolar Disorder or any other mood disorder.

I've finally learned why.  All of my patients at that time were #artists, #dancers, or other #creatives who were pathologized, misunderstood, and told were broken.  They were made to sit and talk when their natural constitution was to move their body.  I've had to come to a realization that the work I used to love is not always #therapuetic.  Treating #intuitive people overcoming #trauma and #fear with just the #mind is not always helpful.  One size does not fit all.

I've always gone through times of transitions by learning something new.  I'm in yoga teacher training @ishtayoga and it's been the best professional development experience I've had since my training #tulanemedicalschool  Had my patients been exposed to #yoga prior to their mindfulness training, they may have had better results and felt more #empowered. 
As I continue to incubate the next stages of my journey as a #healer, I invite you to begin to reflect on those people who you've judged too harshly, who you've told were "crazy," or were "too sensitive." You've probably avoided them in your #dating life and said not nice things about them. I've made these mistakes and starting in 2019, I'm going to start teaching you another way of being with #emotions, challenging people, and facing the fear about either being or being around wonderfully #creative #souls.

I believe inner strength is much more than muscle and force - it means 
1. RISE to the challenge despite the possibility of “failure” whether that’s wobbling/ falling/ being rejected etc
2. STAY when discomfort arises. When it’s not all sparkly and new anymore - there’s an inner strength that will carry you.
3. TRUST that you’ll never be handed something you cannot handle.

For the first time since #yogateachertraining I actually felt like a teacher and not a teacher in training. I was in flow, sharing the gifts of #yoga #āsana, #pranayama and #meditation with 5 women who trusted in me to guide them through their experience. .

One participant had been practicing for over 20 years and another had never done yoga before. The #viniyoga of yoga is all about ensuring yoga meets the unique needs of each individual. I offer options, choices and invitations to participate in components of the class or not.

After class I experimented with some supported handstands 🤸‍♂️to test my shoulder/neck/back recovery. Feeling like a completely different person compared to post-accident! 🚲 .
Grateful for the huge part yoga has played in my recovery. .
