In the darkest times of my experience with mental illness, I wrote on pieces of paper and taped notes on my fan blades so I would see them when I'd wake up. I wrote "Rise From Ashes" and "Yes, you can relax today". In the darkest of times when I would try to go to yoga it would be a miserable experience, especially when a yoga teacher would say to "just smile" or "I'm a little OCD so let's do the other side the same as the other". I wanted so much to have relief and to not be triggered during a class.
Yoga is the union of mind, body and soul and if the body is sick it is often more difficult to sit with the already uncomfortable ego. I can promise that I'll try my very best to create an environment for individuals struggling with mental illness in yoga class, where we work on root chakra grounding and breathwork.

Three days of yoga straight! My thoughts, feelings, and experience below. 🧘♀️ I set an Intention before each class: 1. To not compare myself to others 2. To not compare my present self to my past self 3. To be the conscious awareness watching my body, and not my minds perception of my body. 🧘♀️ During my yoga practice I moved from my thoughts about my body’s capability, pain level, coordination level, numbness level, racing heart, anxiety and insecurity level, etc - to the conscious awareness that watches these thoughts and feelings. The mind kept taking over, of course, and I kept gently pulling myself back to my breath and the observing spirit. My body changed significantly every time! I relaxed into the poses each time I retrieved myself from the ego. My lungs took deeper breaths, my stomach softened, my shoulders dropped, and I was able to watch the pain and discomfort, without becoming the pain and discomfort - and guess what? It all happened automatically, like a switch.
In this space of awareness I found a type of peace and acceptance only these three days of yoga has shown me. 🧘♀️ As The Buddha, Eckhart Tolle, and other bringers of spiritual knowledge have taught us : “suffering begins in the mind” - “suffering is wanting things to be different than what is”. Today I embraced my “suffering” as a friend, and not an enemy. As something to exist with, and not resist. 🧘♀️ I believe yoga is my new medication. I feel more grounded, balanced, peaceful, clear, coordinated and not as anxious about my symptoms. 🧘♀️ I hope to keep going to yoga consistently when I feeling well enough, and to not get mad at myself for not being able to go, when I’m not feeling well enough. So many humans are living everyday with these negative, hurtful thoughts to our physical appearances, yet no one talks about it. I created this workshop to come together to realize that we are not alone in this struggle, and to co create an experience to heal. The truth is we don’t have to live like this, we can learn the tools to love our bodies, improve our lives, and treat ourselves the way we would treat our loved ones.
