Expectation versus reality (swipe left)
I know within these little squares of Instagram it may seem like the yoga practice is always graceful, effortless and pretty. But the reality is that the discipline and dedication of practice is nothing like what you see in these pictures.
When I’m on vacation in a gorgeous location, I may feel motivated to take some yoga pictures. But please don’t confuse that with practice. They’re just pictures.
Practice when I’m on vacation is extra hard - it generally only happens when I force myself to make time, and it’s usually in a confined hotel room/gym, searching deep within to find motivation...
These are some realities of my practice:
• it’s not easy to make time (especially on vacation!)
• within my 3rd sun salutation, I usually question why I’m doing this...
• my hair turns into a puffy mess
• everyday is different - somedays I’m so easily distracted that I can’t even balance myself in trikonasana
• some days I feel like quitting (some days I do...)
So why do I go through the trouble of maintaining a daily practice?
Before I started Ashtanga, my practice was all about maintaining my flexibility and strength, and pushing myself to find more - I had a lot of attachment towards where I was in my practice and I was honestly fearful of any regression.
For me personally, starting Ashtanga was harder mentally than physically. Although I could do a handstand and various cool funky arm balances, none of that was part of my Ashtanga practice... (and it never was for the first 2 years of my Ashtanga practice!) The practice became a constant ego check - learning to let go of all these “advance” poses, to start back from the beginning. It was hard, but it made such a huge difference - the practice become more than just the poses. I slowly started feeling the shift in my intention.
Today, I maintain my practice because it’s my version of sadhana - routine surrendering of the ego through dedicated practice.
I’m not saying one intention is better than the other. But understanding our true intention will drive our action and our motivation. So be open and honest in knowing your intention for practice.
The ride of the Goddess continues... Navaratri is divided into 3 aspects of feminine; Durga the warrior, Lakshmi the Mother of abundance and fertility, Saraswati the goddess of knowledge.
In my humble personal experience; first 3 days of purification (the war), second the blossoming of re-discovered truth and third the integration through comprehension.
I don‘t aim to be perfect. In my experience, perfection is impossible to reach (if even at all) without getting burned out.
I tried a lot. Mainly through my studies.
During my master‘s degree, I wanted to pass it with best results. And I did. The side effects were restlessness, insomnia, headaches, and a lot of back pain. This is how I came to yoga. And the most I got out of this lifestyle is to accept oneself and be happy with what one has instead of looking for things to complain that one does not possess.
Always see the cup as half full, not half empty.
Perfection is nothing I wish to achieve anymore. Perfection does not fit anymore into what I value and believe. Now, ifI look at my life and myself, I am content with what I have and what I haven‘t. I‘m grateful for what I can and can‘t do. And even if this picture is not „perfect“, I love it just the way it is. ❤️
Yes this is just another picture of a pose from many others that are out there on your newsfeed , this post does not intend to create a negative spiral to your self worth but is to make you understand the importance of how the balance of the physical body manifests as a base to create your own mental focus to reach your dreams . So I use the self as an example . Being a very cerebral personality I sometimes need to come back and align myself , when I find myself stressing and trying to control situations , I step out there in the sun and try to breathe steadily from both nostrils to balance my mind . In order to take action in my life and in order to choose one of many options to work on things it’s important for me to be in agreement physically , emotionally and spiritually with a task. So therefore some balance postures help me focus deeper inside myself . You could try doing this for yourself just by lifting your leg up as high as you can and standing straight with your spine in perpendicular to the floor , take a note of your breath and hold the posture for 30 seconds or more .

Different ways of reaching the plough pose and shoulder stand (halasana and sarvangasana). Choose what works for you. Avoid plough pose in case of severe neck injury or neck pain. Don't let the pressure be on your wrist in Sarvangasana. Support your back with your entire palm. It's fine if you can't keep legs straight. Let the legs tilt towards the head if wrists are taking all the weight!
Happy Shoulder Stands!

Only few days left in this beautiful place.
So we’re making the most of the sun and the sea, especially since the weather isn’t this stunning back home. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’m feeling very refreshed, however missing my dog soooo bloody much.
Ready to smash it when I am back and start my marathon training and continue with my yoga... YTT is only 4 months away! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Happy Sunday everyone.
Yay! My first fallen dancer!! After an extensive & intensive warm up for backbends, I could roll onto my chest with ease & place my elbows on the mat with my foot still in my hands without any struggle! 😇 Thank you Master 🙏🏻❤️ Not sure if you still remember the fallen dancer video I posted on IG story last week. My foot slipped out of my hands when my elbows tried to reach down for the mat & I splatted unceremoniously onto my mat. There was a real tug of war going on within my body 😅 The importance of warming up our bodies to the intensity of the final posture. Obviously my self-practice last week fell short of that. Oops.
my love, did you know
the tide is water being tugged towards the moon?
a whole ocean being pulled to the stars ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
i don’t know why the beauty of that
catches me unaware ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
i know how those seas feel ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
so much of me is water
an ocean beneath my skin
straining towards you
- Poem by Jen Brady
I never used to like change, actually I used to hate it. I like the idea of having a routine and my habits. If something or someone happens to interrupt my routine I’d get very anxious.
This year however I’ve embraced a lot of change... and loved it. My outlook on it has drifted and I am no longer afraid of it.
Everything always changes and we should allow things to change without clinging to them.
We should watch the changes like passing clouds or think of it as flowing water.
If you just allow water to flow, it is very pleasant to sit and watch.
First workout of the holiday and it felt so good to move.
As much as I loved experiencing the safari, truly best week of my life.
You do end up sitting in a jeep for most of it. My body was feeling lazy and stiff. And getting hubby out of bed was a challenge too haha.
Today is #WorldMentalHealthDay and is also the day I have found out I have been one of the lucky few that has been accepted to run the 2019 Virgin Money London Marathon.
Bit of a coincidence as I have decided to run the marathon for the Mind Foundation.
You know when you sign up for something but don’t actually expect to get in haha. Well guess I’ll be doing bit more running than I thought. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I have experienced mental heath issues personally and have been surrounded by close family and friends who also suffer with similar issues.
I’m glad it’s a topic that people are slowly more open about and I hope that the more we share the more people will open up and discover tools that will help them look after their mental well-being.
It’s important we appreciate, respect and take care of our minds. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’m extremely nervous, but also very excited to that I got in and that I can run for such a special charity.
Wish me luck and let’s do this!!!
After a very long and stressful travel we made it to Zanzibar.
Not gonna lie there was a few tears on our way here. At one point we thought honeymoon will be cut short and we will be flying back to London.
But couldn’t be happier to be here now. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Time to explore, watch this space for some interesting beach backdrops 😏🙌🏻
Last morning in Zambia, we fly to Zanzibar in few hours. Even though we have no activities planned other than drinking tea and eating breakfast we still got up at 5am to watch this breathtaking sunrise. No filters needed in this photo as the colours are soo unreal. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’m so sad to leave, I could live here.
People here are extremely nice.
Everyone waves and says hi to everyone.
They have little interest in fancy cars, phones or latest fashion trends.
They don’t see much beauty in man made things. Their main interests, love and passion are for the bush and all the animals it contains. It’s such a beautiful and refreshing outlook on life.
I think they’re doing it right, they focus on little things that we forget to find beauty in.
Zambia it’s been an absolute pleasure.
Feeling very happy and grateful last few days. However I do realise it’s a lot easier to remember gratitude when you are travelling or when you are somewhere that feels a lot more special than your ordinary same old home.
The key is to remember to stay grateful even when not surrounded by magnificent animals such as elephants, lions and hippos.
Remember the little things in your life. Those really are the key things, we forget to treasure them because they are always there. If or when they are gone we would miss them dearly. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Happy weekend lovelies! And even if your weekend isn’t spent somewhere exotic it does not mean it’s not as fantastic or as special. Here’s a little reminder to just stay present and remember to enjoy the little things today.
Finally landed in Zambia, we’re in the middle of nowhere and I couldn’t be happier. It took us 24 hours and I’m exhausted. We can hear hippos from our room and were told elephants come to drink from our swimming pool on regular occasion. I’m literally in heaven.
Do, every day, all that you can do that day, and do each act in an efficient manner.
But do it without haste, worry, or fear.
Go in full speed and full force. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’m hangover today after a lovely night with my bestie yesterday, so the best I can do today is recover and be a couch potato. And that’s ok!
Happy weekend ! 🙃
