Koyasan okunoin-there is a feeling here that’s so mysterious and peaceful and is one of my favourite places.In this graveyard is the mausoleum of Kokai  who brought buddhism from China to Japan and is said to be in eternal meditation.This cemetery is over a thousand two hundred years old and hundreds of monks have been buried here as a resting place so they can be close to kukai.

As adults, we tend to hold tension in our bodies and minds, a subconscious ‘poise’ we make ourselves upkeep...when we have the energy.
•
And when asked to relax, we don’t actually know how to. We’ve become too good in ‘holding up’ that we forgot how to ‘give in’.
•
This is why sometimes in class I like encouraging students to the brink of exhaustion. It makes the hardest of faces and the steeliest gaze soften like blissful babies by savasana.
•
In short, exhaustion is not necessarily a bad thing... if you see it as an opportunity to shed off layers of inhibition and genuinely #surrender towards relaxation.

Spotlight 🔦 on: Julio (Hard ‘J’) (“Julio” (Soft ‘J’ ) Lee: “The Balanced Ball Player ”

I LOVE my clients!

Today’s spotlight is on Julio, a 21 years young fullback for the Oakland University Golden Grizzlies who came to me with two primary goals: 1) to make the university football team as a walk-on, 2) to become a more balanced athlete.

I met Julio at no place other than @plummarket in West Bloomfield, MI, where he was working part-time at the moment to fund his schooling, and we began exchanging niceties each time I bought groceries. “There is something special about this kid,” I thought.

After a few months of getting to know him, I learned that he was on a bodybuilding programb, and I invited him to a free session. In his consultation, I discovered that he had a deep, passionate desire to play collegiate ball.

We began with a few weeks of modified bodybuilding, adding in plyometrics to maintain his power, agility, and finesse.

Each session, we cracked open the holistic lens into his fitness and wellness a bit more--evaluating nutrition and mindset. Herein came the introduction of superfoods like turmeric for #antiinflammation and the daily practice of stillness and breath via #meditation, beginning with @headspace.
When his goals shifted more seriously to making the football team, we took our sessions onto the turf, where--just like with Paul and many of my other clients--there was a happy mixture of the hard and the soft elements of training--the hard including: jump training, footwork on the agility ladder, and sprints, and the soft comprising: self-myofasical release, sun salutations, and pranayama to warm-up and #yin style #yoga as well as meditation to warm-down.

One of the greatest gains I saw Julio make was the shift to centeredness that he achieved. The ability to stay calm, cool, and composed amidst the hurricane of the workouts he faced. You can see the calmness on his face in the #halflotus picture.

As athletes (which is all of us), we need not only the capacity to push forward with: grit, determination, resilience, boldness, power, and the attack of ACTION.

Are you familiar with the connection between certain yoga poses and the idea of detoxing by “twisting and wringing out”? I’ve heard it so many times that when I see this pose, my first thought is always, DETOX!

I know “detox” is such a buzz word these days.  Everyone is looking for the easiest way to cleanse our organs, rid the body of waste, and start fresh.  I read the following recently from Ali McGhee, which made a lot of sense to me, so I thought I would share!  She basically states that these poses do not detoxify, but rather they stimulate the organs that are already built to detoxify. Have a read 👇

“While organ detoxification during a yoga practice is not actually a real thing, the connection is there for a reason. In yoga and Ayurveda traditions, yoga techniques known as the Shat Kriyas (or Shat Karmas) serve as practices for cleansing your internal organs and, by extension, your subtle and spiritual bodies. Six practices are outlined: Kapalabhati, a breathing technique believed to cleanse the skull; Trataka, eye exercises said to improve eyesight and stimulate tear production; Neti, cleansing the nasal passages and sinuses; Dhouti, cleansing the intestinal tract by drinking liquid until purging occurs; Nauli, contraction and release of the abdominals, particularly the rectus abdominis; and Vasti, rectal cleansing.

Next time you hear your yoga teacher beckoning you more deeply into a twist by promising detoxification, know that what’s actually happening is not detox, but something just as important that you can control: you’re challenging yourself physically, lowering your stress level (stress is a major contributor to slowed detoxification processes in your body), activating your lymphatic system, and working towards optimal organ functioning, which ensures that your body’s natural detoxification methods are going to work at their highest level.13 So go ahead and take that twist. Fine needles are inserted at certain sites in the body for therapeutic or preventative purposes. It involves stimulating sensory nerves under the skin and in the muscles of the body. There are many forces within the body that require balance in order to achieve health and fitness; two forces that are commonly referred to are #YIN and #YANG. Treatment with #Acupuncture is undertaken with the aim of restoring all the body systems to a state of balance (homeostasis).

Today we tried acupuncture for the first time. It was mind blowing how different we felt even after one session. Body felt lighter, mind felt clearer and we felt more in-tune with our body and surroundings.

As a course of six treatments is recommended before you can really feel and experience the full benefits of the treatment - we will be doing a full write up at the end of our treatment session.

This is something I touch on in every single class. Be it #vinyasa or #yin. 
Be impeccable with your word.

Practice the pause.Breathe deeply into the side walls of your lungs. Observe the flow of your breath. Relax your jaw. Draw shoulder blades down towards your tailbone lengthening your spine and engaging upper back. Visualise the space within to be. For the breath. Between each vertebrae. Release the muscles between the brows to open and awaken the third eye chakra. Observe thoughts as they arise. Without judgement. Find gaps in the endless stream of ego thoughts. Become aware of how the mind works. As the space between thoughts grow the light of your consciousness grows. Become aware of a sense of presence. Feel the depth of peace within. 
Wait. Listen. Pause.

Respond to situations only when you feel you have passed these 3 gates and are able to react from a perspective of calmness.

Our hearts break and heads hurt as fracking begins this week in Lancashire. Environmental destruction is waged for capital gain despite all evidence indicating the many harms of fracking. There is much we could say, #frackoff being one of them, but, for now, let us offer "praise to water", one of the many elements affected by fracking. May the beauty of these words awaken in you a new appreciation for the life-giving force of The Flow, and a desire to join the fight for a #frackfreefuture. .

Let us bless the grace of water:

The imagination of the primeval ocean
Where the first forms of life stirred
And emerged to dress the vacant earth
With warm quilts of color.

The well whose liquid root worked
Through the long night of clay,

To discover the pure quiver of itself

E’ con questo insegnamento di Gérard Blitz che elaboro un certo grado di differenziazione degli stili di yoga. Lo yoga è uno stato, ancor prima che una scienza; una disciplina; una ginnastica del corpo; una filosofia di vita. La parola di per sé significa unione, e allora viene da chiedersi: perchè suddividerla in tanti stili, categorie, … così diverse? Forse che, anche nello yoga, noi occidentali abbiamo voluto imporre una segmentazione mentale e dividere il suo essere per definizione unico ed unitario? (continua su @yogamstudio)
