Talking about trips... Last weekend I went hiking in the beautiful surroundings of Tuscany and San Gimignano. It was absolutely stunning and felt amazing to get to know friends I met here better during these sporty activities! One advice for students who are abroad at the moment: discover the country to! Travelling is a great way of discovering the country and the culture you're living in and hiking is just the most sustainable way (#wurlife ) of traveling!
With this post my role as guest editor came to an end. But I'm on Instagram too! If you have more questions about studying abroad in Italy or Milan, don't hestitate to contact me. I also do posts/stories/blogs there! @myrtheisrael
Not only busy city life in Milano, but it is also nice to explore the beautiful surroundings of North Italy and the lakes 🤩
Today we went to Lake Como, with a temperature of 16 degrees (!!) it felt quit strange to cross the Christmas market in Lecco!
The nice thing about a friend studying abroad is that you can always come by for free and explore the city with a local (kind of)! And also nice for me to see my friends again and to show them the place where I live!! This weekend Laura from Wageningen is here to visit me, I showed her the highlights of Milan and my favorite spots and restaurants. And of course the Christmas lights at the Duomo 🎄🤩
Spent the last 6 weeks working on how to establish a Start up Farm for my ACT: incubating a regional innovation system to revitalise rural areas by attracting young entrepreneurs and meeting their needs/demands with farmers' ones. Hereby some pictures and videos of our visit to the Decohof, our pilot case of such project, a farm in the area of Dalfsen. The foundational principles of Vincent's farm, the owner, are based on permaculture and the soil health has the utmost importance. As he said to us:
"Healthy soil, healthy food, healthy people". 🐽 🌱
I'm not sure how to formulate my thoughts yet. I feel very involved in such project and firmly believe in it. I might come back to this post and edit it, but just wanted to drop some pics of these cuties 🐖
They made me think of you!!! Biggest pigs I've ever seen and they had curly hair on top. You'd have loved them!!! @beccaloocas miss you!
Sugarcane is a major consumer of water.💧💧💧➡️ The decreasing level of the natural groundwater resource threatens food security, economic growth and livelihoods.
💪Support from the Sustainable Water Fund (FDW), @solidaridadnl and partners intend to enhance both sustainability of sugarcane growing & to raise smallholder incomes.💰 .
Major activities include training on good agricultural practices, introduction to improved irrigation systems, farmer training in best farming practices and improving their financial literacy. .
Researcher @christineplaisier of @uniwageningen conducts the impact evaluation and is preparing the mid-term evaluation. ➡️ 1000 sugarcane farmers from 3 different sugarcane mills will be interviewed to track progress after 2 years of the programme.

As if doing a Master’s is not enough to keep you busy, Carlos Serrano Fajardo (24) also runs his own company from his student room. He and three friends started Remode Solutions. They make personalized lab bioreactors, which are used to ferment and produce wine or beer. But they are also used to produce pharmaceuticals, chemicals and biogas, and for treating wastewater. They recently purchased a 3D printer. 'It is being shipped from Australia and it is as big as a family fridge! It’s going to be interesting fitting it into my room.' At the @startlifenl Graduation Day, Sinterklaas wrote a poem especially for @zer0foodwaste
Here we go:
My dear friends of Zero food waste,
Food that remains uneaten gives me a real bitter taste!
There are still so many among us having insufficient to eat,
But in prevention of food waste no one is taking the lead.
Data Pete explained me about your frictionless solution,
Providing huge financial savings for every hospitality institution,
Outfitting the waste bin with a scale and smart camera,
Will prevent food waste: a restaurant’s biggest dilemma!
Lately you have spoken to many potential clients,
None of the caterers, chain restaurants and hotels stayed silent,
They all want your fully automated waste monitor,
So they don’t have to spend any time on registration anymore!
The Image Recognition algorithm is currently being trained,
and the expertise in food waste images is to be gained,
This month the first couple of prototypes will be placed,
In locations where all food loss shall be traced.
I’ve received your wish list for this year,
Asking for funding to further develop your monitoring gear,
To grow the next years to over a 1000 installations,
Preventing 4 million kilo of food being sent to recycle locations.
You’ve made enormous improvements within the StartLife program,
A big shout out to their incubator being so awesome,
The Zero team has data, a network and years of corporate experience,
But needs some support in entrepreneurial and commercial excellence.
I am really excited about this ambitious project,
I wish your company will soon be a fact,
You can use all data, sales and operational Petes for support,
And obviously you deserve to win the Horecava Innovation award!
All the best, Sint and DataPete

Today I had my third exam in Milan, and it might be the same kind of subject at the #wur but the way of organizing has some huge differences with the way in Wageningen! Italian teachers are for example normally fifteen minutes late and the exam is sometimes displayed on a beamer. "I want absolute silence now, like you're watching the 100 metres of Usain Bolt", our professor said which made everyone laugh... What is the biggest difference between your university abroad and the Wur?
“Studying abroad is a really big step for me, it’s totally out of the box. In my family we don’t have anyone who has studied abroad“
I have three sisters who already got married and have children, so it’s really hard for them to pursue a career, but I want to be different. My family always asks me when I will introduce my boyfriend, but they still support me to pursue my dream. My dream is to become a researcher and lecturer; WUR is the way to reach that dream.
I was really nervous when I got off the plane at Schiphol. I was really shocked by the height of Dutch people, but after a few months I got used to that. I felt excited to start my journey here, but I still had a lot of questions; How can I get from Schiphol to Wageningen? How can I ask people for information? Luckily, I got help from the Indonesian association, they had given a lot of information before I departed from Indonesia and there were even some people who picked me up at Schiphol. Ciao! 🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹 My name is Myrthe and this week I will give you a sneak peek in my life abroad!
After 3 years of #wurlife as business and consumerstudent (BBC), I'm now studying at the Università Catollica in Milan since last September. I was always interested in other countries and studying abroad, and living in Italy as a real local sounded as a great experience to discover the country with the most unesco world heritages and the best food destination of Europe! My goals for this exchange semester are to learn languages (improve English and Italian)📚, to meet new people and places 👣 and to learn more about myself 💡. Study Abroad Wur asked me to give you a little insight in my week and so I will! This week I have some nice events coming up: starting with some coffee meetings, studying for my third exam (less nice), pre-christmas dinner with friends and a friend from Wageningen comes to visit me!
If you have any questions about studying abroad/in Italy this week, don't hesitate to ask!
Wal asr, innal insaana lafiihusr...
Here I found the reflection of Surah Al-Asr.
A Place where I feel every tik-tok on my clock is important. 1 min mean you can step up the stairs, 5 mins late is ashamed, 10mins should be enough to pray, 15 mins you can finish your lunch, 1 day is precious! When weekend come you will feeling very grateful and truly happiness.
