The #WorldHealthOrganization has just announced that an addiction to video games, dubbed a “#gamingaddiction” is now a #mentalhealthdisorder. The #WHO also said that “#gamingdisorder” is a unique mental health condition

The World Health Organization announced “gaming disorder” as a new mental health condition included in the 11th edition of its International Classification of Diseases, released Monday. The WHO defines a “gaming disorder” as having three major characteristics that experts say are similar to substance-use disorders (#drugaddiction) and gambling disorder. “One is that the gaming behavior takes precedence over other activities to the extent that other activities are taken to the periphery,” Dr. Vladimir Poznyak, of the WHO’s Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse, told CNN. The other two characteristics that must be present are impaired control over gaming and a continuation or an increase in gaming despite negative consequences like “disturbed sleep patterns, like diet problems, like a deficiency in the physical activity,” Poznyak said. But, these patterns of behavior must be present for at least 12 months before a gaming addiction can be officially diagnosed as a disorder, according to The New York Post. “It cannot be just an episode of few hours or few days,” Poznyak warned. “I’m not creating a precedent,” Dr. Poznyak added. Poznyak proposed the new diagnosis to the WHO’s decision-making body, the World Health Assembly. Instead, he said, WHO has followed “the trends, the developments, which have taken place in populations and in the professional field.” The news was cheered by Hilarie Cash, the co-founder of reSTART, one of the first inpatient treatment programs in the #UnitedStates for video game addiction. “I’ve been surprised it’s taken so long for everybody to catch up to the fact. But I also understand that they need to have strong, research-based evidence before they bring on a new disorder,” she said. “I think it’s a game-changer, although how quickly the game will change, I don’t know.” 🖐🏾More in comments👇🏾#SocialEngineering

So we've been following this gaming disorder thing and though we don't agree with some of the news surrounding it we feel inclined to at least present some objective information.⠀
⠀
Poznyak said the expectation is that the classification of gaming disorder means health professionals and systems will be more "alerted to the existence of this condition" while boosting the possibility that "people who suffer from these conditions can get appropriate help."⠀
⠀
He said there are three major diagnostic features or characteristics of gaming disorder.⠀
⠀
"One is that the gaming behavior takes precedence over other activities to the extent that other activities are taken to the periphery," he said.⠀
⠀
The second feature is "impaired control of these behaviors," Poznyak said. "Even when the negative consequences occur, this behavior continues or escalates." A diagnosis of gaming disorder, then, means that a "persistent or recurrent" behavior pattern of "sufficient severity" has emerged, according to the ICD.⠀
⠀
A third feature is that the condition leads to significant distress and impairment in personal, family, social, educational or occupational functioning, Poznyak said. The impact is real, he said, and may include "disturbed sleep patterns, like diet problems, like a deficiency in the physical activity."⠀
⠀
Overall, the main characteristics are "very similar" to the diagnostic features of substance use disorders and gambling disorder, he said. Gambling disorder "is another category of clinical conditions which are not associated with a psychoactive substance use but at the same time being considered as addictive as addictions."⠀
⠀
For a diagnosis to be made, the negative pattern of behavior must last at least 12 months: "It cannot be just an episode of few hours or few days," Poznyak said. However, exceptions can be made when the other criteria are met and symptoms are severe enough.

VIDEO GAME DISORDER!
This morning, WHO (the world health organization) officially announced “gaming disorder” as the newest mental health condition as is now listed in the ICD (international classification of diseases). Described as a “digital heroin” and calling video games one of the most addictive substances on the planet. Characteristics of the disease include, gaming taking precedence over regular healthy activities, increased stress, sleep/dietary problems, with the disorder correlating with those of a drug addict in many instances. Many doctors do not agree this should ever have been listed in the ICD, as it’s not yet been a proven disorder, but more so a coping mechanism amidst anxiety or depression. And here all I used to have to worry about was how long my batteries would last on a car ride! What are your thoughts on this? Do you agree? Sound off below!

Oh wonderful !! So now, instead of parents taking control of their kids and not allowing them access to video games 24/7, their rabid brats can bog down our medical system some more with their “mental disorder “ which undoubtedly will be “treated” with therapy and more PILLS instead of being prevented by PARENTING. Every time I wake up and read the news there’s always a new angle in the works to deflect personal accountability at all costs ! 😳🤦🏻‍♀️ #author #bigpharma #worldhealthorganization #medicated #society #parenting

🎮🎮🎮👹✨✨ The World Health Organization (WHO) made this announcement today💥 I’m glad they did! One of the reasons why I never really got into video games as a kid was because I watched my cousins literally get sucked into fictitious vortex after fictitious vortex! They would play like 12 hours a day during any school break and didn’t give a fuck about shit else besides advancing to the next level. Those muthafuckas were INVESTED!!! 🤯🤯🤯 It blew my mind so I consciously decided to tread lightly for fear of becoming a casualty. 💥 I was watching a report on this announcement this morning and they showed a kid in his pre to early teens who stopped going to school over his video game addiction. There is 3 major criteria in serious video game addiction:
1	Gaming takes precedence over other activities, "to the extent that other activities are taken to the periphery," he said.
2	Video games are continued to by played despite negative consequences—i.e. "impaired control of these behaviors," he said.
3	Compulsive gaming leads to significant strain on personal, family, social, educational, or occupational functioning, affecting relationships. 💥 According to (WHO) 2 - 3% of video game players fit this profile. I’m sure there’s a spectrum too! 💥 They reality is that most things are neither all good or bad so anything can become a drug if abused. Yes, even video games! #VideoGames #GamingDisorder #WorldHealthOrganization

#psychology #krasnodar #worldhealthorganization
