What does it mean to be one of the pack?
To buckle down as an immediate family unit to face the storm of life's unending pressure. To sacrifice for blood akin, protecting one's own. To come together, despite disputes and grievances, because despite everything else, you have the pack.
Or to venture beyond to create your own. To be lucky enough to stumble upon the rare people whose souls touch your own. Who resonate with you as if they have know you for a lifetime. To barrel into the darkness as one, howling at the stars to make way for your collective dreams. Feeding each other with optimism so as to not be consumed by this world.
Can the pack be both? Neither? How much free will do we have over this choice? ... Ponderings inspired by the intersections of my life. Just finished Unsheltered, a novel by the brilliant Barbara Kingsolver on family and the delicate balance between security and freedom. And Mowgli on Netflix. And wolves at the zoo. And my people. This is how my brain works.
Just read the most amazing article in the #pacificnwmagazine that came with the #seattletimes Sunday newspaper. #Harmonyfrazier is my new hero. She dedicated more than forty yrs of her life to caring for so many animals at #woodlandparkzoo from hippos to arctic foxes. I almost cried when I read that she would be retiring January 2019 as I thought of all the animals that she has helped throughout her career. 🐒🦊🦝🦍🦁🐯🐴🦓🐮🐂🐏🐐🦙🦒🐘🦛🦏🐭🐹🐼🐰🦡🦔🐻🐨🦘🦇🐿️🦉🐊🐢🐧🐦🦎
Sometimes animals need our support protecting their wild habitat and sometimes animals need our help finding a new home. Luckily, we were recently able to assist in two different cases where the expertise of zoo staff found a safe and appropriate new home for some very special creatures—and this story does have a happy ending.
Many animals, including reptiles and spiders, are threatened by the pet trade. Woodland Park Zoo works closely with wildlife agencies as a partner for consultation and providing a safe home on a case-by-case basis such as these two examples.
