9018 (清代雕冰花格門六片) Set of six 9 feet tall antique Chinese carved lattice screen doors with ice-ray (or cracked ice) lattice pattern with fine carving. One detailed photo shows the interesting and intricately carved elephant- like mythical animals in interesting circular pattern. The mythical animals and the magpie bird on the right together suggest the arriving or the coming of good things or happy time. The latticework is decorated with bamboo leaves and partial element of a plum blossom. Bamboo and plum blossom are part of the Three Enduring Friends: pine, bamboo, and plum blossom. Ice-ray is lattice pattern with irregular triangular shapes that is a favorite of many connoisseurs for Chinese woodwork. It is sometimes decorated or carved with other vegetation motifs. This set of lattice screen doors originally would have been composed of many more panels to form an impressive large wall or walls of an old Chinese building often with much higher ceiling than ones built today.

Elementary Montessori Math: Multiplication of Binomials. I am going to try to explain this clearly! These are the lessons I would give BEFORE the square root lesson I posted about last week. The first thing we talk about is what binomial numbers are. They are numbers that have 2 parts. For example 14 can be a binomial when we write it as 10+4. All three photos show 24x15. In the first lesson, we used coloured beads to lay out (20 x10) + (4x10) + (20x5) + (4x5). After counting we discover the answer is 360. These students can figure this out on paper, however this is preparing them to do the next steps so it’s important that they have concrete experience with multiplying Binomials. The next step is using the algebraic peg board. Using hierarchical materials (the green pegs represent units, the blue pegs represent tens and the red represent hundreds) the students laid out the same math problem. We counted the pegs and discovered the answer was the same...360! The last step is exchanging the pegs when we had groups of ten. 10 unit pegs were exchanged for 1 tens peg and so on. The last picture shows 3 hundred pegs (red) and 6 tens pegs (blue) and the answer is 360! The students see that this is the easiest one to read because there are less pegs even though the answer is the same. Next comes SQUARING!
