“If you could do anything, what would you do?” As Sarah Williams hung out with a group of friends a couple years ago, conversation drifted to this question. Working at the time as a fashion account executive and costume designer, Williams had an immediate answer. “I was like, ‘I’d love to have a space where people can grow spiritually that’s also about self love and self care.’” She wanted to build the kind of space she’d been looking for herself, a shop where you could be comfortable and buy crystals, incense, empowering books, candles and other zen things. 💎🖤 “A lot of times, these are very white spaces owned by white people,” Williams continues. “I wanted a place where I could have that type of energy, and also walk in and see a familiar face.” Rather than defer the dream, Williams, 36, took steps to build her business. She gifted herself with an LLC for her next birthday and used her savings for a retail space in Crown Heights. Last November, she opened the shop she’d imagined the year before — a home goods and lifestyle store called Rituals + Ceremony (@ritualsandceremony). #blackownedbrooklyn
Walking into Rituals + Ceremony off the bustling city street is an immersive, transporting experience. The minimalist white space, punctuated with intentional pops of color from display stands and an AstroTurf-lined accent wall, prompts you to slow down and be easy. Warm oak shelves — holding an array of products, from sage smudge sticks, to crystal pendants, to herbal teas, to books on 21st century social movements and holistic wellness — invite you to linger. “Some people say, ‘This looks like it belongs in SoHo. It shouldn’t be here,’” says Williams, who is originally from Queens, with parents from Liberia. “But this place should definitely be here. We need spaces like this.” 🌙✨ Last month Rituals + Ceremony hosted its first event, featuring a Pilates-inspired workout by fitness coach Kali Blocker (@kaligotbody) and a talk on the health benefits of the cannabis compound CBD. “I want to start having more get-togethers where we can commune and have a safe space,” says Williams. “A calm place where you can come and just be.” #blackownedcrownheights#blackownedbrooklyn
Rituals + Ceremony is stocked with unique, aesthetically pleasing products. “I really care about things like packaging and the details of how things are done,” says Williams. “We deserve high-quality products too.” Among her shop’s specialty goodies are tins of rose-scented shea butter, glass candles with gemstones nestled at the bottom, Adinkra intention candles for manifesting various desires, @levo_oil infusers that transform herbs into homemade oils and butters, green-friendly paraphernalia and all forms of incense. Nine months in, the shop has been well-received by the community. “There are times when things are hard and I think, ‘Was this the right decision?’” Williams says. “But it’s the moments when people come in and say thank you, or that something was helpful, that I remember why I’m here. It just makes sense.” || 717B Nostrand Ave. #intentionsetting#blackownedbrooklyn

We love blue jeans (and any navy pop in home decor!) Our design team works at our office in downtown LA and is always on the lookout for inspiration. Every pair of Just Black Denim jeans starts with a mood board. Where do you find inspiration?
Had a great time today attending an Eco Dyeing class @nationalwoolmuseum run by Nicola from @handmakersfactory. From gathering the eucalyptus leaves from nearby Moorabool Street, through to making the dye and a little bit of screen printing as well. Heaps of fun.
I’m still rebuilding this space after accidentally deleting my old account. But since starting fresh, I’m seeing some new faces around these parts so I thought I’d introduce myself.
I’m Britt. Legally, Brittany but that name never felt like me. I’ve gone by a dozen nicknames over the years. This feels most like me.
I live in Sacramento with my husband and son, whom we adopted from the local foster care system. He came to us when he was 2 years old, and he’s been with us for nearly six years. We’re nearly finished getting re-certified as a resource parents so that we can provide a home to another kiddo in need, so that we can grow our family. After the end of this month, we could get a call about a kiddo at any time. We’re admittedly quite anxious about entering the chaos of the foster system again, but overjoyed at the idea of another heart in our home to love.
In the last four years, we’ve owned, fully renovated ourselves, and sold three houses from all over the Sacramento region. We never intended to be flipping and selling. Each home we thought was forever. We’re now in our fourth home, a new, modern build this time. The house is in an urban neighborhood that we love and it has a bright rainbow on the front. It’s just the absolute best thing to return to. We finally feel at home.
I spent the last decade doing corporate communications, public relations, and brand development. At the beginning of this year, I launched my consulting business, specializing in brand development and communication strategy. Being a solopreneur has stretched me in ways I never imagined. I’ve learned/am still learning so much about myself, and I’ve found a community of the most loving and encouraging people to grow alongside with.
As you can probably see, I’ve got a penchant for excessively lengthy social media posts filled with all kinds of feelings about entrepreneurship, motherhood, politics, and community. If you’re in to those sort of things, then you’re in the right place.
Posts like this always feel so weird to write about myself. I love seeing these sort of things that others write about themselves, so figured I’d give it a try. Thank you for reading.
#transformationtuesday Tomorrow I’ll be in a room full of business owners, creative professionals, and entrepreneurs as we kick off the first of our #UnWhineWednesdays series and this one will focus around “self caring”. Let’s be clear! As an entrepreneur building a business and it being your passion you can have the tendency to go hard, go alone and go full steam ahead at rapid speed; partly because when you look to the left and look to the right you see worker bee x3 getting what it appears to be ALL. THE. THINGS. DONE. Remember if it looks to good to be true........#unfollow#stopscrolling#delete#protectyourpeace
People often give you their opinions, advice, or offer guidance. You’ll get opposing input from people, sometimes people that you love which can be overwhelming and confusing. If you can develop your skill and following your own intuition that’s best but when you look to others it’s really important to carefully choose who you take advice from. You can’t just act on behalf of any loud rando spouting opinions that are most likely a justification of their own life or insecurities and have nothing at all to do with you. You want to only take guidance and input from someone who is living their life in a way that you admire (or are offering advice on a subject they’re modeling well), and hopefully understand who you are and want the best for you (not just a validation of themselves). #thewelllivedwoman

it’s a milestone birthday, right??⠀
I would have never thought I’d be where I am today a year ago. When someone asked me what I wanted for my birthday last year I told them,”I want to do what I want to do, not just because someone tells me to or thinks I should”⠀
I totally did that & can only truly appreciate the gravity of that statement a year later. wow. ⠀
