Woman of the Day: Tiplee (from The Clone Wars and Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir)
Tiplee was a Mikkian Jedi Master who was active during the Clone Wars. Tiplee and her twin sister, Tiplar, fought together at the Battle of Ringo Vinda. Tiplee witnessed the murder of her sister during this battle due to a clone malfunction that triggered a premature activation of Order 66. Later in the war, Tiplee joined fellow Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi, Aayla Secura, and Mace Windu to investigate a battle that had been fought between Darth Maul’s Shadow Collective and Count Dooku’s Separatist Army. The Jedi were confronted by the two Sith Lords — who had briefly allied themselves — and a lightsaber duel ensued. During the fighting, Tiplee was stabbed in the gut by Dooku, killing her.
Tiplee was voiced in The Clone Wars by Anna Graves. She later made an appearance in Issue #3 of the canon comic Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir, which adapted unaired scripts of The Clone Wars. The issue featuring Tiplee was released 4 years ago today.

June 14, 1992: MONA VAN DUYN is named 1st female U.S. poet laureate.
According to Wikipedia, "A poet laureate (plural: poets laureate) is a poet officially appointed by a government or conferring institution, typically expected to compose poems for special events and occasions."
Mona Van Duyn was born in Waterloo, Iowa, and started secretly writing poems in notebooks on her grade school years. In 1981 she became a fellow in the Academy of American Poets and in 1996, Mona was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Her enduring themes of love and marriage ranged from the scathing to the optimistic. Van Duyn died of bone cancer on December 2, 2004.
Poet Edward Hirsch wrote in the New York Times Book Review that Van Duyn “has a gift for making the ordinary appear strange and for turning a common situation into a metaphysical exploration”. I could keep trying to describe the importance of the poet to literature but think I think it's better just to let you immerse into her words.
"The quake last night was nothing personal,
you told me this morning. I think one always wonders,
unless, of course, something is visible: tremors
that take us, private and willy-nilly, are usual.
But the earth said last night that what I feel,
you feel; what secretly moves you, moves me.
One small, sensuous catastrophe
makes inklings letters, spelled in a worldy tremble.
The earth, with others on it, turns in its course
as we turn toward each other, less than ourselves, gross,
mindless, more than we were. Pebbles, we swell
to planets, nearing the universal roll,
in our conceit even comprehending the sun,
whose bright ordeal leaves cool men woebegone."

JANUARY 1st, 1818: MARY SHELLEY anonymously publishes her famous gothic horror novel "Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus”.
The idea for the book strikes her mind when Lord Byron challenged Mary and their companions to write a horror story during a rainy summer in Cologny, Geneva, Switzerland.
Some say that, the fact that Mary was raised by her liberal philosopher father Williams Godwin, and because of her mom’s legacy as a pioneer feminist author (Marry Wollstonecraft), reflects the story when it comes to Frankenstein creation's free will as well as the dynamics of social norms. .
Other say that, from a feminist point of view, Frankenstein’s failure as a parent reflects Mary’s personal experience and guilt feeling about her mother’s death shortly after Mary was born and, and the lost three babies, two of them as a miscarriage. Fact is, the book does talks about losses bringing the public to reflect about how it is to feel alone even when you're surrounded by family and friends.
Born in August of 1797, in Greater London, Mary was raised by her father to be free to choose her own political view. She married her first love, Percy Shelley and also had to face the death of her daughter, Mary with only few months old. .
The reasons of why the book was first published anonymously are not all clear, but judging by the time it was written, one can say publishers wouldn't want to risk their money in a horror book written by an young woman.
After 5 years of anonymity, William helped Mary to publish the book under her name. .
