The Green Man and the Green Woman emerged in pagan Europe. So they were bound to disappear when the Roman Empire was first converted to Christianity and then fell apart when the last emperor was deposed in 476. ⠀
The Green Woman's image can be found in the stonework of ancient churches in England and France, and is viewed as the feminine face of nature. Also known as Sheela-Na-Gig she is often pictured entangled in vines and foliage. The Green Woman's "nature" encourages us to see ourselves despite self limiting perspectives we have taken on through the years.⠀
The lower half of the body of the Roman Green Woman sometimes consists entirely of leaves. So she is free to move, not tied to the soil, while at the same time she displays her connection to the vegetable kingdom. ⠀
In fairy folklore there were tree fairies called Green Ladies, that lived in the trees and were often offended if the trees were not treated with respect. Old sayings have it that before cutting a branch it was best to ask the fairies for permission.⠀
We honour the Green Man and the Green Woman in all our offerings for ceremony and when part taking in any connection with nature.⠀
Gratitude to them both for helping us remain connected to our ancient herbal roots in an ever growing technological world.⠀
A quick draw in the evening, a reminder before the sun set to take care. To be mindful of heart and spirit. To nurture and nourish with gentleness.
This is perhaps the first time I've worked so continuosly with The Hobbit Tarot and I'm honestly really enjoying it.
While the imagery has orcs and wild wolves so it isn't necessarily a cosy deck it nonetheless conjures a feeling of cosy nurturing in my soul. I absolutely love LOTR and The Hobbit - when I studied The Hobbit in highschool I was one of the few, maybe the only one in my class who dove head first and loved it.
If I were to be any of the Middle Earth beings I would most certainly be a hobbit. Who would you be? 💚
The skull is an interesting symbol. A friend gifted me these tealight holders a couple of weeks ago.
Skulls have been used as powerful symbols for as long as we can remember. And human bones and remains hold a special place deep in our psyches.
The bones of our loved ones are treated with care and respect, even after millennia when accidentally dug up they will be respected - as if they hold a link to the person they once were or still housed a link to the soul.
The bones of saints are believed to hold great power, the miraculous power of the saints themselves. Even to the extent where we have more reliquaries than we should have (more than ten fingers for one saint for example 😂).
The remains of a witch, when buried, were often covered with a large stone or iron bar to prevent the witch coming back and reaping revenge!
In some eastern esoteric practices (like some schools of Tibetan Buddhism) the skulls of skilled monks are used as cups for rituals to imbibe the skills of the dead monk.
As a symbol, they are a memento mori (a reminder that we all die, and ultimately we are all equal in such a fate). They also act as a protection symbol for those that work with ancestral spirits; a useful loci for ancestors to be present in the home if we are drawn to this work.
A skull symbol is a subtle tool to invoke the powers of our ancestors, even when we want to be subtle about the home.
Do you use the skull symbol in your work?
Everyone is panicking about Mercury Retrograde, but I have a secret to tell you. Mercury Retrogrades have become my favorite times during the year. I shift my focus away from technology as much as possible and I reconnect with my most reliable resources...my hands, my paper, my sharpie and my art supplies.
People kind of seem to ghost me when it’s MRx, and I’m not going to lie—I like it. True introvert words 💁🏻♀️ This short, 3-week period of time happens at least 3 times a year—4 IG we’re lucky. That’s right. I called Mercury Rx a blessing. If you think your brain is noisy the rest of the year, you should stop panicking and blaming all your problems + fears on it and simmer down and listen closely. Dial into the downloads it’s sending you. The messages I receive during MRx get me through the down time until the next one. New ideas, new answers to problems I’ve been trying to solve, new inspiration, new growth, renewed energy. I’m turning my magick all the way on this time. I’ve had so much success reversing my mindset + my thought process surrounding this stigmatized period of time I wanted to try to amplify it with everything in my arsenal. I’m tapping into my crown, third eye, throat and heart chakras to receive all of the healing reassurance and resilient confirmation to continue working on my passion projects, connecting the dots that seem like a stretch when everything else is so noisy and distracting...and renew my sense of wonder. I would like to invite and even challenge you to make the most of this MRx. Every time you want to get pissed or upset and blame Mercury, say thank you and look for an alternative route. Be resourceful and ask what this “problem” could be steering you towards instead.
Read a real book. Write on paper with a pencil or pen or crayon! Light candles. Take a bath. Sweep your doorsteps with a broom. Wash your windows and look outside instead of at a glowing screen. Send someone snail mail or a care package. It’s ok if these things take a little longer! That’s the point. Slow the fuck down + rest. Chill the eff out for a hot minute. You’ve heard nothing blooms all year long. Release the dead weight. Are you ready?
