🇬🇧 Because there’s no room in the veggie garden yet (the green beans keep going) I sowed winter spinach in a big bucket. You have to be creative if you have such a tiny vegetable garden. I’m gonna eat it als babyleaf so I sowed it close together.
Out on a bike ride I was surprised to come across a lush patch of what appears to be #perpetualspinach on vacant riverbank land at Wilkinson's Point! If it's vigorous & hardy enough to get established without a human hand, I definitely want to grow it! Ain't nature's adaptations amazing?! 🌱
Couldn't find any small plants to take home, but the plant was sprouting 'runners' which I will TRY to root (unless any of you tell me it can't be done- but I like a challenge!) Other option is to wait for it to seed, and hope it isn't slashed meantime! I'm assuming it got there from dumped greenwaste- or a guerilla gardener? Yes, yes, I know you can buy seed for this, just humour me! 🌱🌱
On this scorching day, we’re throwing things back to wool-sweater and row cover weather with a picture of winter spinach production in high tunnels. To read about our 2-year study investigating the effects of planting date and variety on yield, check out our grower report published through UNH Extension [link in bio - and always easily found on the extension site or by searching “UNH spinach report” in google]. ❄️🌱
I rescued these spinach plants from some weeds that had grown around them. It had grown in a clump so I separated it out and have planted it in the long raised bed where I had beans last year (lots of nitrogen will have been fixed as a result of those beans which will help the spinach). I'm planning on sorting the front garden at some point and putting a couple of raised beds out there also for my brassicas as it's north west facing.
Watch this space! 🥦
What are your gardening plans this year? Really interested in hearing from gardeners that are growing in my area in particular. Short British summers make things difficult. 🌿🍃🌱🌱 ______________
We still have several feet of snow on the ground but at Jordan Small Middle School, we’ve got freshly grown spinach for our salads! It’s so sweet!!! #winterspinach#farm2school#schoolgarden @schoolnutritionassoc @schoolmealsthatrock @maineschoolgardennetwork @schoolnutritionservicesdpg
I am surprised to find my spinach survived winter! These amazing plants are already growing brand new leaves! I had no idea spinach could do that. I will be clipping off the old dead leaves, sprucing them up. Im getting my spring garden ready, but the spinach got a headstart...
Бейбилийф салатен микс за утрешната доставка🍃. Зимният спанак е супер сладък защото натрупва захари, за да оцелее при замръз❄️ // Baby leaf salad mix ready for tomorrow’s delivery🍃. Extra sweet winter spinach. It accumulates sugar in order to survive the frost❄️. #babyleaf#saladmix#winterspinach#organicfood#localfood
Winterspinat Haldenstein is is a lovely winter spinach named after the Swiss town where it has been grown by nearly all who live there since before WWI. I received the seed years ago from William Woys Weaver, early in my time managing his Roughwood Seed Collection. The seeds are pointy, not round! You can plant it in late fall for winter harvest, or plant it now through early spring for spring harvest. Available at trueloveseeds.com! #winterspinathaldenstein#winterspinach#trueloveseeds#haldenstein#heirloomspinach#wintercrops
🌱🌱🌱 It’s real cold, but life is alive, if you know what I mean. Seeds are breathing, and in my hoop house I found all these beauties cracked open and moving towards the sun, building green bodies, transforming energy, hope embodied. Here we have a delicious and nutty winter spinach from Haldenstein, Switzerland called Wonterspinat Haldenstein; one sprouted Landis Winter Lettuce next to one unsprouted; an anonymous carrot that I grow simply to eat; and a Russian Kale that I try to eat out of existence, so that it won’t harbor Harlequin Bugs over the winter. #wintercrops#winterspinach#wintercarrots#winterlettuce#winterspinathaldenstein#landiswinterlettuce#redrussiankale#seedkeeping
I don't know the wizardry behind it, but a new market here that sells local farm goods on commission had fresh-picked spinach in twist-tied bags during an ongoing deep, deep freeze. I devoured it last night like I hadn't eaten in a week (absolutely not the case). Look, I even took a picture of it. Might go back again today. 🤞🏼#vitamindeficiencyofsomesort#farmfresh#makesadifference#winterspinach 🤷🏼♀️
