1988 Wynns Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon - This was a surprise packet last night. Cassis, dark black fruits and bayleaf on the nose. On the palate an outrageous amount of sweet ripe fruit for a 30 year old wine; pure unadulterated blackberry and ribena juice. I came back to this an hour later and it had turned more savoury, showing cigar box notes, the core of black fruit still humming along. Still really fresh for a wine of its age but the acidity is failing and the tannins have fully resolved. At its peak right now you’d have to say.
Chateau Haut-Bailly in recent years been a poster child of Bordeaux modernism done right. With one of the longest histories in the region, vines were planted in its vicinity as far back as 1461.
With such pedigree, it is unsurprising that in the spectacular 2010 vintage, a pretty fantastic wine was made no matter how you look at it. This is a perfect example of “an iron fist in a velvet glove” – poised and elegant but powerful and structured at the same time.

Roses and red cherries, raindrops on hot bitumen, with evaporating trails of graphite and blood, thyme and porcini mushrooms. Medium bodied, lithe and confident: sour cherries and cranberries, bound in orange rind, dried leather, and red ribbons of acidity; snowflake tannins, slowly alighting.
