Mouton Rothschild 1982
An interesting question to ask ourselves is: what would be the best Mouton Rothschild of the 80s? Both the 1982 and the 1986 have been great favourites, but which one would win? Judging from my own experiences of the people I encounter at tastings, wine aficionados in their own right, whenever two great wines such as these are entered, the average outcome would always be about 50%-50%. I have to bear in mind that the 1986 is only now starting to reach its full potential. For the very well-conditioned bottles, it even might take a few more years. The 1982 on the other hand has been showing its best for the past two decades, and it will stay that way for at least another decade.
One of our friends unexpectedly brought a well-conditioned bottle of the 1982. We don’t mind being surprised like that at all! When pouring it out, it was beautifully dark red, although in the glass it seemed a little less clear than you would expect for a 1982. There were lots of minerals, notes of cassis, chocolate, some wood and spice. This is the fingerprint of Mouton Rothschild shining through, and what’s more, a fingerprint 1982. Wow!
At the beginning of this tasting, as I was comparing them in my head, I was still leaning toward how beautiful the 1986 is. But as I was enjoying this wine, I gradually started to soften my stance. This 1982 was fabulous!
