After being seriously injured, Sgt. Joe Enders (Nicolas Cage) rejoins the marines in the pacific and is given the task of protecting a Navajo code-talker, Ben Yahzee (Adam Beach), during the battle of Saipan. 'Windtalkers' falls a bit too short to stand shoulder to shoulder with the likes of 'Saving Private Ryan', or 'The Thin Red Line', as a serious war flick. It's just too cheesey, clichéd, too run of the mill, and despite some nice brotherhood bonding moments, it doesn't make up for one-dimensional characters. I also think there was an missed opportunity, here, to approach a war movie from a different perspective, but they under-utilized the whole code-talker angle. That being said, as a loud, big-budget, action spectacle, though, 'Windtalkers' delivers in spades. John Woo seems to have let his imagination run wild, with enough whizzing bullets, massive explosions, general wanton violence and a piling body count to keep action junkies giddy. That's how this film is best served; a mindless, Hollywood, shoot-em-up extravaganza that'll give your home-theatre set up a work out. ✔✔✔✅✅

REST IN PEACE: Samuel Tom Holiday, one of the last surviving Navajo Code Talkers, has died at the age of 94.
During the war, Holiday served with the 25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, and was involved in operations in Kwajalein, Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima.
He would recount his experiences in "Under the Eagle: Samuel Holiday, Navajo Code Talker"
He received a Purple Heart and Congressional Silver Medal.
Holiday was surrounded by family and friends at the time of his passing. He will be buried on the Navajo Reservation, in Kayenta, Arizona, next to his wife.
Navajo leaders believe fewer than 10 Code Talkers are still alive today. The exact number is unknown because the program remained classified for several years following the war.
Semper Fidelis Marine. A true warrior.
