Turkey for days 2018 edition. Thank you to everyone who came out tonight for our presentation of @wildturkey #russellsreserve , #kentuckyspirit , and #rarebreed . In addition to sampling 3 beautiful expressions of Wild Turkey (2 of which were stellar private barrels from local retailers) - we raised close to $1000 in raffles and donations that will be used to stock the pantries at Paducah’s Family Service Society. Well done folks. CHEERS! @34yearsmaster - Spiderwebs ring a bell? #cnf barrel chosen with The Quad & The Rafters.
It’s Thanksgiving week and the mad rush for pumpkin pie and stuffing has begun. I made one major mistake today: trying to go to Costco around lunchtime.
I went in at noon and figured there was enough time before Thanksgiving that it wouldn’t be busy, and during the daytime it would be slower. I was wrong on both counts.
I roll into the lot and it’s a mad house. It’s like one of those scenes from the beginning of a zombie movie. You’re weaving in and out of traffic, cars are crashing left and right, people are getting eaten by zombies...
I parked at the very back of the overflow lot and walk inside to the end of the world. Carts. Everywhere. Old people. Everywhere. People are lined up 15 people deep for samples, everyone’s walking the the *middle* of rows so you can’t get by, dogs and cats living together... mass hysteria! (name the movie reference 🍿)
I go to the one place I know I’m safe: the whisky aisle... only to find in horror that my once pristine whiskies have been shuffled around and mixed with tequilas and vodkas!
So as we roll into Thanksgiving, the takeaway from all this is to be appreciative for the good things you have in your life. Also, do whatever it takes to be the guest at someone else’s dinner so you don’t have to go to Costco during the holidays. 🥃
Well onto the Wild Turkey bandwagon now, here I am at a Tasting with the crew from @thewildrover_ and @Tristhecampariguy. A great session that gave wonderful and enjoyable insights into how Wild Turkey came to be and how they are run today by father and son at the helm of making whiskey.
What we have here are samplers of Wild Turkey Rye 81 Proof, Longbranch, Wild Turkey 101, 1894, Decades & Rare Breed Double Proof. The pick of the litter and bang for buck is most definitely on the Rare Breed. If you like high proofers, all the markings of bourbon like toasted oak, toffee, vanilla and caramel syrup that just lingers and claws at your mouth, then this is a bourbon for you (&me).
1970 Wild Turkey 8/101 🦃🤘!
Prior to WT’s acquisition of the JTS Brown & Sons Distillery (f/k/a Ripy Bros, Anderson County, and Boulevard Distillery), their whiskey was sourced from all over. This may likely be from JTS Brown, a preferred source and where Jimmy Russell was the young master distiller, but it could also be from anywhere else in Kentucky.
Thanks as always to @rarebird101 and his supremely helpful website!
Tale of two turkeys 🦃🦃 Did you know two subspecies of wild turkeys live in the Sunshine State? The eastern wild turkey occurs across north Florida and the eastern United States, but the Osceola wild turkey is only found in the Florida peninsula. Thanks to science-based wildlife management, there are plenty of wild turkeys for people to enjoy. Watch this video for more info! Video courtesy of Fresh From Florida in partnership with the FWC.
