Well, that’s a wrap on PhD fieldwork part one! Hard to believe the field season is already over. It’s been a real pleasure sharing updates from the field with all of you — a BIG thanks to everyone for taking an interest in my project!
You know when you wish super hard for something for years and years, and it pans out EXACTLY the way you hoped it would? That’s what happened when I got the funding to do this PhD. I first visited Ngorongoro in 2012 and was immediately blown away by its high density of wildlife. From that point on, I hoped to return and do my PhD on Ngorongoro’s large carnivores. And I can say in full honesty that this field season was everything I hoped it would be and more. I’m going to miss the hell out of the hyenas (and yes, even the lions) over the next few months. But I know the wait will be worth it.
I expect to be far less active on social media over the next 3 months, as I’ll be in Germany analyzing data & attempting to re-gain some semblance of a social life. That said, I’ve still got a ton of pictures and videos to share during this interlude, so there will be occasional posts. As for live videos from the field, they’ll continue in October when I head back to Tanzania for my second field season.
Until then... asante sana and tutaonana baadaye!

the early 20th century, European bison were hunted to extinction in the wild. The last wild animals of the B. b. bonasus subspecies was shot in the Białowieża Forest (on the Belarus-Poland border) in 1921, and the last of B. b. caucasus in the northwestern Caucasus in 1927. The B. b. hungarorum was hunted to extinction in the mid-1800s. The Białowieża or lowland European bison was kept alive in captivity, and has since been reintroduced into several countries in Europe. They are now forest-dwelling. 📍- Hall 33-39, Natural History Museum, Vienna
Three lakes within a volcanic island within a lake within a desert! Central Island, within Lake Turkana has three lakes each with different Ph and salinity levels. One is home to flamingos, another big Nile Crocodiles and the third an endemic species of Talapia fish. I've been lucky enough to see a lot of the world and this place blew me away! #worldheritage#kenya#turkanacounty
