The missus. The other half to my favorite backyard resident. She’s much more shy and doesn’t visit as often as he does but she’s always appreciated. How can you tell if one of these woodpeckers is a male or female? Males will have a full red cap along with a red “mustache” whereas females have half as much red on the cap along with a black mustache. 🌲

Long distance traveller 🐥🌿✨
The Northern Wheatear (Oenanthe oenanthe) makes one of the longest journeys of any small bird in the world, crossing land, ocean, ice and desert. It migrates from Sub-Saharan Africa in spring over a vast area of the Northern Hemisphere that includes northern and central Asia, Britain and Europe, Greenland, Alaska and parts of Canada. In autumn they all return to Africa, where their ancestors wintered before them. The Greenland race makes one of the longest transoceanic crossings of any passerine bird. The Alaskan birds travel almost 15,000km (9,000 miles) each way - crossing Siberia and the Arabian Desert, and travelling, on average, 290km or 180 miles per day, some taking a direct route crossing over 2,000 miles of the Northern Atlantic nonstop before continuing over land to Africa. Quite remarkable for a bird weighing no more than 25g or about the same as one AA Lithium battery!
This is a male in summer plumage, they lose their striking black eye mask in winter and are much harder to distinguish from females. I have seen these incredible birds in small numbers in Richmond Park like this one in April, and greater numbers at Portland, Dorset on their autumn migration
