The lansan might not look like a remarkable tree but it is highly prized - particularly for its aromatic resin, used as incense.
However, damaging extraction methods and agricultural expansion have led to dramatic declines in lansan tree populations throughout the Eastern Caribbean.
Tree tappers are now being trained in a new, safer extraction method and licensed to harvest the resin from specific areas approved by the Saint Lucia Forestry Department.

Downy Lobelia is one of several native lobelias, including the showy red Cardinal flower (Lobelia cardinalis), that are pollinated by bees. Both are named after Matthias de l’Obel, a Flanders born doctor and botanist. Many plants are named after physicians, the most well know being Swedish Doctor Carl Linnaeus. The gardenia and poinsettia are named after physicians Alexander Garden and Joel Poinsett. Interest in medicinal plants was common among doctors before the modern age of lab created drugs and healing aids.
