Kuopio, city of 110000 inhabitants and this photo has been taken one kilometer away from the city center. Finland ! Finland national bird: whooper swan
Whooper swan, Finland’s national bird, at sail near Hvalnes Nature Reserve on Iceland’s east coast.
After Arctic terns and and fulmars, these guys were fast becoming my photo nemesis bird. I couldn’t seem to get a one in focus, let alone a half decent shot.
Then, shortly after we’d left the Hvalnes reserve, we came across a group preening on a pebbled beach, right near the road.
I pulled over, put the window down and fired off a few shots - then took off again, because I was blocking the road.
Hadn’t even looked at them till today (some six weeks later). They’d seemed a bit rubbish when I’d first looked at them through the viewfinder, but they turned out better than I’d thought. Happy Friday 🇮🇸

More heralds of winter in the north. Whooper Swans fresh in from Iceland, gracing a windswept loch on Unst - the northernmost Shetland Island and part of the UK (on a level with Bergen, Norway).
