I got sun dried tomatoes today and decided they HAD to go into an epic salad asap. I love buying foods in bulk because not only does it reduce packaging, it also automatically pushes you to choose whole foods. Case in point, sun dried tomatoes don’t need to be purchased in tiny jars, swimming in their oil - you can buy them in bulk, make a healthier choice, and still get all the flavour! 🍅

Fresh olive oil is so wonderful and fragrant. It cN degrade fast though and become rancid, so you should consume it within 6 weeks of opening a bottle. I put a little date label on mine to remind me. This means that you pretty much have to buy it in smaller bottles and forgo the larger bottles even though it might be a better price.

1 packet frozen dragon fruit (could use acaí)
A few inch slices of aloe vera
A little coconut water

Then top with whatever toppings you would like or have on hand!  So many ways to make these...you really can't go wrong.

These veggie curry pies are a delicious way to use up leftover curry. I found this recipe off @colesmag_team using a vegetable korma curry recipe but you could substitute any curry or casserole for that matter (just make sure it isn’t too soupy). Just cut a piece of puff pastry in half and add some curry on top of one side of the pastry peice, leaving a 1cm gap around the edges. Cover curry with the other side of the pastry and seal edges by pressing down on them with a fork. Brush a little egg on top of the pastry. Pop in over at 200 degrees and leave in there for 15-20 minutes or until nice and golden.

29 🖤 wow I feel so blessed making it to 29, having the experiences I have had, be surrounded by the most amazing friends and family and live the life I do. Growing up my dad was terminally ill, he always would be annoyed when people would complain about been another year older because he would of done anything for more time. With this notion ingrained in me, growing older and birthdays are a blessing. 28 brought me many challenges and happiness- having another daughter 🐕, travel to new places 🇫🇷, making plans and designs 🏡 and be back studying and learning 🤓. 28 you taught me life doesn’t always roll how you want it to but that’s ok, just enjoy the ride and be there for those who you love. Have a swipe if you want to see some funny family pics my brother sent me 😳🙈 ps I’m the baby of the fam for reference.

I love adding vitality oils to my water or La Croix. Can I give you a little tip though? DON’T PUT OILS IN A PLASTIC CUP! I didn’t know this when I first started using oils and I destroyed a water bottle! And probably ingested some chemicals too 😬 Always use glass or stainless steel!

I was listening to Nina Teicholz, an investigative science journalist, who has the most fascinating, or perhaps scary is a better word, book on vegetable oils. To start with, vegetable oils are not made from vegetables, they are made from seeds and beans. Vegetable oils are a very recent addition to the human diet. And one that has only really become ubiquitous recently. The natural fats that we used to eat were suet, lard, butter and tallow, plus coconut oil and palm oil in Asian countries. Vegetable oils were actually used to lubricate machinery during the industrial revolution. (Yikes! It gets worse). In order to stabilise vegetable oils, which go rancid very quickly in their unprocessed form, they hydrogenated these oils in the 1910s. Originally the plan was to use these more stable hydrogenated oils as soaps, but they thought that it looked a lot like lard and poof puff Crisco was invented and marketed as a modern marvel. This was when margarine came on the scene as well. In the 1940s vegetable oils became much more prolific because they were able to stabilise them enough to sell in your local grocery store. They were marketed as a health food and The American Heart Association began actively promoting unsaturated fats like Crisco. What’s worrying about the amount of vegetable oils being consumed, is what Nina describes as the outcome of the ‘Pure Study’; the largest ever epidemical study ever in this area showed that the people with the lowest amount of saturated fat, lead to the highest risk of stroke. Is this from the low level of saturated fat? Or the high level of vegetable oils? Unknown, but I think I’ll stick with my butter!

Every time I’m at a vegan festival I always get the wings as a cheat treat.. but with baked buffalo cauliflower you don’t have to feel as guilty😋 I just breaded in equal parts of garbanzo flour and water before *baking* (not🚫frying) them and then tossing them in the sauce which is hot sauce and melted coconut oil or vegan butter. Then baking a little longer to crisp it up. Next time I wanna put them on top of a salad!!! 🥗 I was lazy and didn't make ranch it's @daiyafoods 🙌🏼

Do you know the difference between cacao and cocoa? No, they’re not two ways of spelling the same thing. Cacao is chocolate in its raw form. It hasn’t been processed and is much higher in nutrients - it’s actually thought to be one of the highest source of antioxydants. Cocoa, on the other hand, is the sweeter powder you probably used to make chocolate milk as a kid. It’s been processed, so it’s much lower in nutrients and is often mixed with added sugar. The best thing you can do whenever you’re craving a chocolate treat is to use raw cacao powder. If it’s too bitter for your taste, combine it with bananas or dates to sweeten it naturally.

💁Let's talk about last nights dinner, Its been a super busy time for me with only 5 weeks left until Final EXAM day. I have been working long days on these case studies and sometimes dinner is just thrown together. Sound familiar?🙋
I try to plan my meals around color, vitamins, nutrients, which are essential for my body.

Let's break down my plate shall we?
This plate is loaded with fiber, Vitamins C, antioxidants which means removes toxins & free radicals from our body, Vit E, zinc, iron, manganese, selenium, magnesium and Omega 3's.
✔Broccoli -High in Vit C
✔Cauliflower- High in Vit C
✔Brown rice- Rich in iron, Vit E, selenium , manganese
Brown rice's pytonutrients have been linked to a lower risk of cancer, diabetes & heart disease.
✔Lamb- Rich in zinc which meanscboosts overall immune function, heme iron, omega 3's & protein.
✔Sauerkraut- a fermented food which is important for our gut health

Experimenting with some fun new things like @knowfoods chickpea pasta which is not strictly low carb but definitely low glycemic index meaning I get to eat pasta without a bg spike 🙌🏻🤤 I cooked the pasta and added garlic, pork belly and arugula sautéed in Kerrygold with a splash of HWC and devoured it.

Last Nights Dinner at Sage Organic Vegan 🌱 Bistro in Los Angeles ( Culver City) 1. These were the best buffalo cauliflower wings I ever had in my life! 2. The Sauces for the gluten free soft 🥨’s were amazing [nacho cheese, habañero cream cheese, & maple mustard] 3. The two entrees pictured are The Soul Bowl [ the macaroni cheese ball in it was to die for - and us vegans know how hard it is to recreate Mac & Cheese ] & the other entree was Butternut Squash Ravioli with cashew Alfredo sauce. Each dish here was about $14 dollars to $16 dollars, so a little more priced than I would like to spend on vegan food. Was it worth ?? Absolutely.. the menu was so extensive and All Vegan- it was hard to choose. -

Yesterday’s dinner!! Steamed broccoli 🥦, #veggierings gluten-free cauliflower onion rings, wild caught salmon 🐟, scallops topped with Alessi Authentico pesto!! Delicious. It’s been awhile since I’ve had some good quality fish!! Salmon is especially super healthy for your brain& is packed with omega-3’s. I am lucky that @ajnans always tries to get it wild-caught despite the increase in price. Farmer fish can be raised in unsanitary conditions and fed corn/grains instead of what a fish would normally eat in the wild. I have been taking my health to the next level with @drmarkhyman ‘s book, Food. Definitely will do a whole recap for all you healthfood nerds!! It’s super import to think of food as medicine. 😋 hope you all had a wonderful Tuesday!! ✨💛 •

Blueberry Kanten - the healthy vegetarian alternative to jello. Surprisingly cooked blueberries are more nutritious than raw and this is my favorite way to enjoy them, topped with either whipped cream or cashew-coconut cream, and so easy to make. I learned to make this is a cooking class I took with Chef Myra Kornfeld.

1 TBSP kudzu or arrowroot
2 1/2 cups apple cider or juice 
2 TBSP agar flakes
2 cups fresh or frozen blueberries

1. In a small bowl dissolve kudzu or arrowroot in 1/2 cup of the apple juice to make a slurry and set aside.
2. Put 2 cups of the apple juice in a medium pot. Add the agar flakes and 1 cup of blueberries. Bring liquid to a boil, lower heat and simmer for 5-10 minutes until agar flakes are dissolved.
3. Add the slurry to the liquid, stirring constantly, until mixture just starts bubbling again- no longer. Turn off heat and stir in the second cup of blueberries. Pour into a shallow pan and refrigerate about 1/2 hour until set.

Este fue mi desayuno de hoy. En la foto falta el aguacate. Normalmente es así como desayuno. A los huevos les agrego cebollín, el aguacate lo consumo por si solo y lo q ven para acompañar es casabe de yuca. Como comenté hace días, no me gusta consumir pan, mi pan del día a día desde hace 5 años es este. A propósito de los huevos, lo aconsejable es comer la amarilla blanda, de otra manera se corre el riesgo de que el colesterol contenido se oxide convirtiéndose en colesterol malo. La amarilla de huevo tiene muchos nutrientes necesarios para el cerebro, como el choline y en especial para los niños. Our newest obsession is #juicing! We got this juicer off of our registry and used it for the first time today! We made orange juice (pictured), then we made the “mean green” juice which had Granny Smith apples, kale, ginger, lemon, cucumber, and celery. It was so good!!! Even @jones_exposure liked it and he’s not a vegetable lover. Will definitely be posting more as we experiment! #juicingwiththejoneses 😆

Want to know a secret? Dave and I often have completely different meals for dinner. He eats meat, I don’t. He has some pretty intense food sensitivities, I don’t. So his dinner is often repurposed for lunch the next day (along with some simple meal prep items like rice and shredded chicken).

I still make dinner for both of us each night so I totally get it when my clients say “I really don’t want to have to make two separate meals”. .
I am constantly working on ways to make it feel like I’m not making 2 meals but still enjoying what I am eating.

One strategy is that I try to utilize at least some of the same ingredients. For example I will provably make these sundried tomato turkey sliders for Dave and make the same meal for me but with salmon cakes instead. They will all bake together and it won’t feel like too much extra work.

You could chop additional sweet potatoes into fries when you are making this to serve to your kiddos or serve the turkey sliders in a traditional bun!

1 lb. ground turkey
1 cup frozen spinach defrosted and water squeezed out

1 tbs. balsamic vinegar

Last year at the end of the year during the holidays I decided I wanted to eat whatever I wanted and indulge so I did. My theory was I could eat whatever and jump back on the healthy eating train in January and drop the excess holiday weight quickly. (Dangerous thinking)I was eating 70% healthy and 30% naughty which just doesn’t work for my body.

In January we moved so I didn’t hop back on the wagon immediately. I slid from 135 to 155. In February I got back into the swing and fairly quickly broke back into the 140’s. Since February I’ve bounced around in the 140’s getting down to 139 a couple times but immediately jumping back up after a weekend with family, dinner with friends, or a trip. ————————————————
For the last couple weeks I’ve been super strict with my diet. No 80/20 we’re talking 100! I feel amazing! It’s not about the number on the scale but the number does correlate with the way my body feels. Over 140 and I feel bloated and heavy under 139 and I begin to feel lighter, faster, and not as puffy and sluggish.
I have not seen this number on the scale since last summer, it was a welcome surprise this morning and a reflection of eliminating some carbs while increasing my intake of healthy fat and veggies. ———————————————
This is truly a lifestyle change. There is no going back to the way I ate before. Sure I’ll indulge in the occasional treat but generally I find that the belly ache, swollen fingers and ankles, and head aches aren’t worth it. 
I spent 27 year of my life eating crap and feeling like crap because of it. It’s just not worth it.

I hit this number while still indulging in healthy treats like my Skinny Margaritas (recipe in the Instant Loss Cookbook), Summertime Strawberry Pie (recipe on instantloss.com), and Reese’s Peanut Butter Milkshake (website). The reason why this is so maintainable for me is because I don’t deprive myself. If I want pie, I eat it, I just make a healthier version and if I don’t want to put the effort into making it then I don’t get to eat it. Pretty simple. Just mind your portions, use whole food ingredients and you can still treat yourself without messing up your progress. 💗

No. We need to stop ourselves from making recommendations about food, based on theories about a single nutrient in food. #TheFatDietitian  - yours truly was at it again setting the record straight on full fat dairy, and risk of cardiovascular disease, on @globalnews. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ A new study (yes, ONE study), published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found no significant link between dairy fats and heart disease and stroke - the two biggest killers often linked with a diet high in saturated fat. In fact, reports go further to suggest that adding full-fat milk and other dairy products to your diet could protect you against strokes. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Now hold your horses folks, this one study is by no means conclusive or robust enough to tell Canadians to drink full-fat milk every day. No. We need to stop ourselves from making recommendations about food, based on theories about a single nutrient in food. I am hoping we get some sunshine today so I can go for a walk, walking has been a real challenge for me lately. The osteoarthritis in my right hip is being a real PAIN😛
I walk for about 10 minutes and without notice, the stabbing pain begins and I have to stop, sometimes it makes me feel stuck, unable to move. I have been told that its hip replacement time, but I dont need that negativity.👇😒
Working on my diet and nutrition, especially bone broth has helped, Im honestly not ready for such a big step.

This seriously has to be one of my favorite times of year. I love when all our hard work in the garden starts to pay off!

We expanded our garden by about 4x this year, so it’s been a little behind others in the area, but we’re finally getting some of the first produce, and it’s AWESOME!
. Have you ever tried fresh Swiss chard? It’s AMAZING, and so super good for your gut health! BUT, I’m picky about preparation. 😝
.
Just take your freshly washed chard and dice it up into rough pieces. Place it on a baking sheet (along with any other veggies you’d like) and sprinkle with a bit of olive oil. Season with Himalayan salt, pepper, and any herbs you like. Then roast it in the oven at 425* until it’s crisp tender and ready to serve!

If you are roasting other veggies with the chard, just know the others will take longer than the chard really needs, so you might add it about halfway through the roasting time for the other veggies.

This works well for any of the heavy duty greens like kale, chard, spinach etc. SO good!

The best organic sourdough from my fave @goguettebread 🇫🇷, organic peanut butter, and homemade raspberry jam made from my fresh raspberries from the garden 🌱 all I did was mash them over medium heat with some maple syrup for about 5 minutes - so so good! #intuitiveeating

I started this quick dinner by sautéing some ground turkey with taco seasoning...while that cooked I washed and shredded some romaine lettuce, cut up 1/2 an avocado, microwaved some white rice that I had already previously cooked, chopped a bit of cilantro, added some shredded cheddar, tomatoes and piled on some salsa. 🥑

Super easy and with some previously already done meal prep items it came together fast! .
Healthy, customizable dinner in a flash. 🙂

Which lettuce to buy? Select one of the loose leaf varieties instead of head lettuce. Loose leaf lettuce plants manufacture their own sunscreen to protect all of those exposed leaves, and it turns out that the plant sunscreen is an antioxidant good for us too. 🌞🌱.

Snacks for the week sorted ✔️ These Choc Peanut Butter Bliss Balls were quick and easy to whip up and taste delicious. With only 4 ingredients, how can you go wrong? 
1 cup dates, 3/4 cup almonds, 1 tbsp cacao powder and 2 tbsp peanut butter.

Add the dates, cacao and peanut butter to your food processor/blender and blend to a paste. Then add the almonds and blend to a desired consistency. If your blender isn’t the best I suggest adding the almonds slowly in a few small batches. If you prefer your balls sweeter or they are to crumbly, try adding a little honey ✨

This simple salad hit the spot and those baked taters were 👌 Switching to a mostly plant based diet (as I'm testing to see how I feel with it) really has not been as difficult as I thought it would be.  At first you think there is no way and then you realize this may have been right all along...duh.

Just don't freak out or point fingers if you catch me eating a chicken wing or ice cream at the beach or fish because I'm all about NOT DIETING and balance.  And by balance, I mean 95% of the time...plants.  The rest...whatever I feel like.
