Decided to try my hand at whittling a spoon today. This spoon is from that cedar log beside it. Cut it down this morning and had a lot of fun. Next, need to whittle me a rocking chair and front porch. Not bad for a first try, I think. #outdoorsfun . #carving#whittling
Took my eldest to the forest to introduce him to wood whittling. We started with magic wands and he did really well for his first go (not that I’m an expert at all 😬) As the weeks draw closer I can feel my energy levels dropping (also thanks to my low iron levels at the moment too). I’m someone who craves the outdoors so being in as much as we have recently makes me feel quite down I know it’ll be a while till I venture out far when I need to care for 4 children. Until then I’m going to keep pushing myself these last 10+ weeks of pregnancy.
Exploring bead making. Elder has a pithy centre, making it simple to whittle beads and thread them onto a bamboo skewer to work both ends (seen in a video of Martin Hazell by @zedoutdoors). Second image is of holly and ivy - ivy also has a pith centre, but holly needed drilling!
Thank you @rebeccadesnos for suggesting I try beadmaking!

Four whittling knives in time for Christmas (Link in bio)
To knife collectors, there is but one pattern of whittler. It’s a traditional pocketknife that has one large main blade and two smaller blades on the other end with two back springs. The main blade is supported by both back springs. The only Case pattern currently available on the primary market is the Case Red Sycamore Wood Seahorse Whittler. It is a designated whittler. It, however, is not the only pocketknife that meets the definition of a “whittler.” Additionally, some whittlers might or might not have used a designated whittler to whittle. My grandfather used a stockman. My great grandfather preferred a congress. Still others use whatever happens to be in their pocket at that moment. My first whittling. Rough carving is done. Trying to make a cat but not quite there yet. I wonder what would make it look more like a cat?
Candy canes, gingerbread men and silver dots cover this 6 inch Santa. Antique mixture painted all over, then after wiping him down, a rubbing of homemade paste from beeswax was applied to seal. You can visit my Etsy shop and get 10% off on most carvings until December 15th! Link in bio. #santascoming #🎅🏻
On the road to get woodcrafting supplies... He keeps asking what his name is and I can’t figure it out. @creature_carvings #woodcarving#whittling#woodcraft#woodcrafts (I know this is cheesy, but this amuses me, haha!)
