In a previous post, I shared that part of anxiety is the need for control. This involves you having a few different tools in your tool belt so that when anxiety rises, you’re able to draw from a few different options to manage the anxiety instead of being overwhelmed by it.
One tool that has helped a lot of my clients is that of 5-4-3-2-1. In order to be most effective, it’s best to use this exercise really slowly. So as you notice each of the items below, be really curious about them. Notice multiple facets of each step. Instead of just saying I see a clock, a plant, a door, a chair and a purse, notice the textures, the colours, and other dimensions about it.
Start with noticing FIVE things that you can see.
Then FOUR things that you can touch.
THREE things that you can hear.
TWO things that you can smell.
and ONE thing that you can taste.
