A fabulous 'unpeated' in style #CaolIla17 from #PortAskaig 🏴 on #Islay . This was distilled in 1997, bottled in 2015 and is one of the Diageo 2015 Special Releases;
AGE - 📍 17yo
ABV - 📍 55.9% (cask strength)
NCF - 📍 yep it would be
NAC - 📍 am happy to pin
V4M - 📍 happy to pin, 🇦🇺 $200AUD;
This price is about where my cut off of the 'affordable' label is. That's not to say I don't go above it, but I acknowledge that is then an expensive bottle for many. This is a brilliant expression. As was the unpeated 15. The cost is not over the top for a cask strength 17 year old single malt. 'Unpeated' is an interesting term. The barley is not dried using peat but rather It's aged in casks that has held peated whisky. That imparts the flavour. It's my understanding the fantastic Bunnahabhain 12 is produced in the same way.
Nose: rich with a caramel and chilli mixture. There is a touch of baking spices and sweet sugary notes - like coffee crystals.
Palate: it's tangy and unctuous in the mouth. Caramel/toffee flavours, some sweet peat and crisp barley notes and oak influence. It's Islay so there is some medicinal coastal flavours as well.
Finish: is just an extension of the slight chilli heat and smoke. Long and lingering. This is a cracking single malt and the peatiest unpeated you will find. 8.5 🌟's out of 10 as an early pointer. Will open up brilliantly to a 9 I expect.

I love to travel. Nothing is more exciting than hopping a plane to a new destination and seeing what awaits you on the other end. This past weekend I went to Detroit for a Rangers/Redwings game and had a wonderful stay at @theinnonferrystreet and they recommended one of the local distilleries @detroitcitydistillery. They graciously opened their grounds to me for photos and samples of their spirits, my favorite being the Butchers Cut Bourbon. A special thanks to @nbritsky for showing up as well (and bringing me to @sugarhousebar). Had such a great time talking whisky and Star Wars with a fellow geek. What a great first trip of the year. Can't wait to see what else comes up.

Connemara is the only Irish peated single malt whiskey in existence today. This whiskey has a distinct peaty flavour and aroma, instilling a delicate smokiness and smooth, sweet taste. Made from the oldest licensed distillery in Ireland, this whiskey will pass your criteria with flying colours!!
Taking a break tonight.
If you manage to get your hands on one of these Totally scrummy! Drams, lucky you. They sold out far too quickly when we worked behind the bar, former occupational hazard of telling customers how delicious and rich some of these drams are.
S I N G L E. C A S K. B A L V E N I E // sorry THE Balvenie. Wonderful dram to kick off my time in #NewYork . Lovely Xmas spice palate with loads of cream, raw dough, dates, raisins, pastry, blackberry leaf. @thebalvenie @balvenieus
Tonight’s dram! The Glenmorangie 19 year old single malt. Aged in American white oak ex-bourbon casks, giving a smooth and creamy texture with subtle sweetness of apple, apricot and tangy oranges, alongside toffee, butter candy and vanilla. This stunning Norlan whisky glass really showcases these aromas! This is a travel retail only release, well worth grabbing when traveling next! 🥃
