I’m thinking it is time to give up my yard to the mosquitos. It was a good, hard battle doing yard work today, but my eyelid is now swelling and I have conceded. The frost will be my friend this year.

One of my favorite polycultures in the main garden this summer ☝ Marigolds in the foreground act as an aromatic border, keeping out weeds and critters. Heirloom peanuts behind them add nitrogen to the soil and help loosen any compaction near the surface. Behind the peanuts are a couple of rows of heirloom buckwheat, which adds organic matter to the soil, acts as a cover crop going into fall, and provides late season pollen for the beneficial insects. At the back, there are several Black Krim tomatoes, scrambling up bamboo teepees... and waiting patiently for enough sun and warmth to ripen. They have been slowly ripening for a few weeks now, but this week's storms have brought them to a standstill.
.
That said, we are very fortunate to have been spared (so far) from much of the rain that was forecasted for our area as a result of Hurricane Florence. That may change early next week, as she loops back up the east coast.
.
Not that we need any more rain. If you swipe across, you'll see some of the rainfall counts that have been recorded by the University of Delaware since April. Local recordings have shown isolated areas of even higher rainfall. I know ours has been higher at times. Three feet of rain.... we're basically experiencing at least double what we normally would at times. As the University put it in a crop update earlier today, two to six inches of rain in one day feels like the norm after this year. Hurricane level rainfall is more or less what we have been living with all summer. Bless all the growers this year 💚 it's been a rough one, and we're still out there doing this thing!! 💪

I wish this very rainy summer here in SE PA wasn’t affecting so many people so negatively, because I am in heaven. I wish most days could be cool and rainy, and I am really in my element. And my flowers are thankful too. 🌱🌸🍃🌼🌿🌹🌾

The new mini pond is getting a huge workout this weekend, thanks to Tropical Storm Gordon ⛆.
.
The good news - the pond works! The beds above the pond are draining into it, sending some of the excess water here (and away from our precious veggies!).
.
The bad news - this pond probably isn't going to be enough. We have a whole week of rain ahead of us, and Tropical Storm Florence is forecasted to be in our area potentially next weekend. This pond is filling fast, and we are only a couple days into a very long, wet week.
.
But - it's all learning, ya know? I mean, am learning exactly what I needed to know, which is that the main garden still needs more shock absorption capacity for all these heavy rain storms. These storms seem to be quickly becoming our new 'normal.' It's been months like this... So, as soon as these storms pass through... I'll be out there digging and digging and digging... and waiting for the next storm to show me whether it's enough 💪

Our heirloom sweet potatoes are beginning to bloom. We are growing three varieties: Pumpkin Yam, Myanmar Purple, and Omani Pink 🍠 When sweet potato plants bloom, it is easy to see that they are relatives of... morning glories! Both bear the scientific name Ipomoea.
.
It's been such a wet year, and we are now in the throes of tropical storm season ⛆ It has me a bit nervous about what I will find when I dig up the sweet potato tubers next month. Hopefully, they are draining well enough with the canna swales nearby.
.
Anyone else grow sweet potatoes? What differences do you notice in the tubers in a wet year versus a dry year?

An early look at the new mini pond that I have been digging the past few days. This sits at the bottom of a slope, at the far west end of our main garden.
.
I had been trying other things all season long to help this garden cope with the excess rain we had been getting (and continue to get, several inches at a time). Nothing I had done was enough. All the mulch, the organic matter, the beneficial microbes, the swales, the deep trenching around the borders... it was all helping but not nearly enough for the amount of rain we got this year. Hence, the new gravity fed pond.
.
I am hoping this will serve as a pressure relief for the garden beds above it. It's been working well so far this weekend.. I'll get to see it in action again tomorrow, according to the forecast ⛆.
.
And another huge thanks to Ben Falk for writing that book a few years ago. It has helped me immensely in times like this. I might have just given up if I hadn't seen what can be done to cope with this much water. Thanks 🤘

Back home from working the farmers market this morning and feeling incredibly thankful for this quick shirt-apron harvest. It rained 5 inches here yesterday... and there's more on the way. It was so intense that I had to just let it go and cross my fingers that what I would find today would be ok.
.
But the waiting was AWFUL 😵 this has been the *wettest* year that I can remember. Saturation has been a huge challenge all season long. These small miracles, like today's shirt-apron harvest (and the rapidly multiplying figs!!), really do keep me going.
.
Yesterday morning, I had no idea how bad the rain would be, but I had this strong conviction that I needed to start digging that new pond at the bottom of the slope, where our main garden ends... so I took the leap and dug, and dug, and dug... til I was disgusting and sweaty just in time for CSA pickups 😂😂😂 my apologies to those who witnessed that yesterday! I got probably about 2/3 of the digging finished before the sky unloaded for the rest of the day. I spent the evening prepping breads and soaps for the farmers market and intermittently immersing myself in Ben Falk's book again, desperate to understand how to work with THIS. MUCH. WATER.
.
The new mini pond is already collecting some water from the beds above it... so that is good to see. I will share a picture sometime later this week, once I get the rest of the digging finished.
