There's something soothing about being on the road. Not really having a plan day by day but seeing what the day brings. Everyday is a new chapter and hopefully one where you venture out to the unknown and have an adventure with a story to tell.

Allen Telescope Array | SETI
Hat creek observatory.
This is an excerpt from a longer day to night exposure ramped timelapse during an overnight stay at the observatory. It's hard to see on a small screen but if you look in the upper left there appears to be a star like object that moves differently, almost stationary. Curious of your thoughts. Satellite?
The Allen Telescope array is a collection of radio telescopes dedicated to astronomical observations and a simultaneous search for extraterrestrial intelligence
The ATA is a centimeter-wave array which uses many (42 at the time of my visit and up to 350 were originally planned for this location) Small-Diameter concept radio telescopes. Compared to a large dish, many smaller dishes are much less expensive and easier to construct for the same collecting area as long as the necessary computing power to combine antranslate the data can be put in place.
Special thanks to Jon at @setiinstitute for the education and conversation. Him, a colleague, his son and I all walked down to the bunk house for pasta and beer after observing for the night. Philosophical conversations ensued
That blinking light in the beginning foreground is a motion lamp being triggered by moths. I didn't notice until I got back from the dinner. If you watch closely you can see the light go on in the @capricamper while I find tape, paper and carry my ladder out and cover the light after midnight. Added to the experience for sure
One of more memorablen times of my life... and sitting quietly, the hum of the dishes all around with Milky way above, forever an experience in my mind.
How I got it: Sony a7s, varied intervals and exposures using the TL+View, LRtimelapse. 4K upload on YouTube.
You know something is huge when the clouds can only shade a portion of what you are looking at. If there was ever a time I wanted to fly this was probably the closest I got to finding out if I could! After visiting I made it a goal to come back and camp here one day. Viewing this wonder from above left me wanting more. Who wants to join?
These guys are really weird animals...we keep seeing these baby pronghorn this year, but whenever we see them, they are always alone. I googled it and the mother pronghorn only spends about 30 minutes a day with her baby. I have to believe that they are somewhere close watching but it still seems weird to me
-The story behind this monument is sad and haunting. Pvt. Dennis O'leary, a lonely and sickly young man who was stationed at Fort Wingate, New Mexico during the winter of 1900/01. During his time there he didn't mix well with his fellow soldiers. When asked about him they would only say that he kept to himself and always appeared unhappy. One night he went AWOL from his post. He wouldn't appear again for several weeks. When he returned he would not tell why or what happened to him while he was gone. He was court-martialed, and accept his punishment. He was to serve in the guard house, which he did without any problems. Till one day (April 1st), in the guard house a shot rang out. As the soldiers entered the building they found Pvt. O'leary dead from a self inflicted gun shot wound. In his suicide note he left a "Momento" in the mountains. Giving them the location and telling them to bring a wagon and team of horses. When the got to the location they found a headstone carved from sandstone, it was a life like trooper with his belt, resting against a tree trunk. On the back it read "Dennis O'Leary, Pvt., Co. I, 23 Inf., died April 1st, 1901, age 23 yrs & 9mo. During his time awol he had carved his own headstone and inscribed his DoD on it. He was originally interred at Fort Wingate till 1912 when his and others were taken to the National Cemetery in Santa Fe.- #onlyinnewmexico#nmnomad#oldwest#instagramersnm#beautiful_newmexico#westbysouthwest#iamnewmexico#igersabq#nmoutside#newmexicotrue#newmexicomag#igersmood#westbysouthwest#ig_color#jaw_dropping_shots#everything_imaginable#createexplore#lost_world_treasures#landscape_lovers
