Everyday we meet people who are treated less than human because of their social situation, their legal status, or decisions they made in the past. This makes us angry, but this quote from St. Augustine reminds us to have courage that change is possible- that the Kingdom of Heaven can exist on earth as it is in heaven. Let us, together, be agents of change for all.
When you know someone's name you recognize their human dignity. By knowing their name, a person is transformed in your mind from a "thing" to be used into a person with a soul. No one wants to be reduced to where they came from, their skin color, the way they look, or the money they have. Names lead to deeper relationships and open the door to the complexity and individuality of each human person.
