🎄 Christmas party season is here 🎄 but the reality is that many of us are not in the mood. I AM NOT A SCROOGE OR A GRINCH. I just feel an intense pressure around the festive period to be chirpy, happy and sociable and I can’t always turn it on. In fact, last week instead of being able to turn it on, I used my old friend alcohol to dial it up a notch. And whilst this worked for a brief few hours, it was quickly negated by not one but TWO emotional outbursts in the space of a few days. Tears. Hopelessness. Distress. Safe to say this wasn’t the outcome anyone wanted. I can’t always pretend to be OK during the festive season but I can try to be honest. I need a bit of isolation this week. Little did I know that making these changes for my well being has bloomed me into something special! 🧚🏽‍♀️ I love how I can learn from myself & really reflect on my wins even on the days I struggle most!

I went into my fitness & weightloss journey full speed in September due to my current health problems. Hearing the news about my PCOS & cervical cancer scared the shit out of me! I cried and bawled for many days knowing the possible outcomes. I was  Newly engaged & have no kids... then hearing that I'm having surgery to remove part of my cervix in 2 weeks time 😭 That was the day I died inside & felt so inadequate with myself. I literally went into shock! Feeling like I wouldn't be able to be the wife & mom I always dreamed of being... I was broken 😵

I made that change for myself & kicked it FULL THROTTLE! Even now today 3 months later I can walk into my doctors office & be scared because I never know what to expect to hear but then I start to feel stronger, more confident, & that scared feeling just disappears! That feeling of knowing that I am beating this all one day at a time & pushing to make sure I live til I am older than dirt! Makes these little day to day problems seem so small...

Those feeling of weakness still come & go, some days are better than the others... & I just gotta tell myself to just go with the flow. Trials are your life tests & without looking back you won't ever see progress. Plus!!! Seeing where you have come from makes it all the better! -

Here’s a throwback for ya. 🤪

Four years ago, I missed the only percussion ensemble concert I’ve ever missed. I was sooooooo sick. Luckily, the kids were able to perform because of the awesome staff I had working with me & Larry stepped up to conduct them. 😱

It took me 2 weeks to start feeling like myself after being sick with 2 viruses at once. After getting over being sick, Shawn & I started our very first Beachbody program. 💪🏽 Four years later, I’m in the best shape I’ve ever been in. I have more energy & I feel amazing!  And guess what?  I haven’t been sick since!  The few times I’ve been a little under the weather, I’ve been able to bounce back quickly. I attribute this to living a healthy lifestyle and drinking my immune boosting superfood shake daily. 😉

Here’s a throwback for ya. 🤪 Four years ago, I missed the only percussion ensemble concert I’ve ever missed. I was sooooooo sick. Luckily, the kids were able to perform because of the awesome staff I had working with me & Larry stepped up to conduct them. 😱 It took me 2 weeks to start feeling like myself after being sick with 2 viruses at once. After getting over being sick, Shawn & I started our very first Beachbody program. 💪🏽 Four years later, I’m in the best shape I’ve ever been in. I have more energy & I feel amazing! And guess what? I haven’t been sick since! The few times I’ve been a little under the weather, I’ve been able to bounce back quickly. Now that’s just rude!

Anyway. 🙄 When I woke up this morning I could barely open my eyes. My migraines have been insane. 
But I have to get my ass up and go to work. Life can’t stop because I have a migraine. I have a family to support, and I get some form of migraine on the daily. I have for years and I’ve gotten damn good at pushing the pain down and getting shit done. 🙌🏻 for a high pain tolerance and a tough guy attitude 
But as much as I can suck it up through the rest of my life I ALWAYS use this pain as an excuse to eat like shit and not workout. 
I’ve been talking about dropping these 40lbs for over 4 years. 
Why is everything else in my life more important than my health? Why can I not excuse myself from my other responsibilities, but my HEALTH is the first thing I shove to the side? 
So today I made another choice to put myself ahead of my excuses. And I’m feeling damn good. .

Cocoa, specifically, contains flavonoids that induce vasodilation (arterial widening), lowering blood pressure. The darker the chocolate, the more flavonoids contained, so don’t be afraid of that 90% cocoa dark chocolate!🍫

That felt pretty good to say. It feels good to shut my inner mean girl up and tell her that I love myself; I love every curve, birthmark, scar, etc. I love parts of me that for years I said I hated. As women (and I’m sure men, too) we grow up looking in the mirror and picking at ourselves for our imperfections. We are our toughest critics, and we don’t spend near enough time loving ourselves.

So I post this vulnerable post and I am telling myself and everyone else that I love my body. I love my thick legs, my stomach, my arms and everything in between.

Am I perfect? No, but what the hell is perfect anyway? My body is in its healthiest, most perfect state it’s ever been in and I’m not finished.

Sure, if you're trying to lose weight, eating more celery and less pizza is probably a good way to go.

But in all seriousness, if you're trying to lose weight, absolutely eat your celery, and lots of other veggies, fruit, whole grains, and lean protein. But every once in a while, so you don't gnaw your own arm off, have some pizza. It's a part of life. Get one that has some veggies on it, have a couple of slices, really enjoy it, and move on. Trust me, it's sooooo worth it.

Most people LOVE getting presents. New iPhone? New jammies? Lynx Africa? We love it. But.... to be honest when I was going through a bad depressive episode at Christmas a few years ago I really hated receiving gifts. It felt like everyone was just doing it because they felt obliged to. I didn’t feel like I had earned them, worked hard enough or been a good friend or family member at all that year. So, a year ago today I was in an accident in which I was knocked unconscious and I experienced my second concussion (in 3 years).

Whilst I’m infinitely grateful that things were not worse, it unfortunately left me with post concussion syndrome (PCS) which I have then spent most of this year recovering from.

I had never even heard of PCS before so I had no idea how much of an impact it can have or what a wide range of symptoms it causes. I will certainly never forget the frustration of not being able coordinate my hand to write or the inability to form the thoughts or words that I wanted to say.

The many different symptoms (physical and psychological) have been very challenging and have meant that brain health and recovery have been a major focus for me this year.
//
Fortunately, whilst I had not previously heard of PCS, I have a lot of knowledge that I was able to apply to my recovery and I was able to find out lots of really useful advice and help from various sources, including Brendon Burchard and  https://concussionfoundation.org/PCS-resources/what-is-PCS //

As you’re giving to others, are you giving to yourself? One simple thing you can do is to take 10 deep breaths before you get out of bed. Great way to start your day with a calm mind. Ending your day this way can help release the stress and tension of the day. Lay in bed on your back, eyes closed and as you breathe in through your nose let your rib cage expand & your belly rise. On the exhale let your back side sink into your bed. Take 10 slow breaths- 5 to 7 seconds on each inhale & exhale. Other great ways to practice self care is to take baths, spend quality time with friends & get in a workout or yoga class.

I know everybody talks a lot about what to eat or which foods are best for this or that and it can sometimes be a little confusing. So I wanted to give a few quick tips about it in hopes of making it a little easier to understand. For anyone wishing to transform into a healthier way of eating it’s a good idea to learn which types of food can help make this transition easier.

There are certain foods that have fiber, fat and protein that will help you to stay satisfied or full longer causing you to eat less food and less often. I am not advocating skipping meals here just for the sake of not eating but instead learning how to use food for proper nourishment and as fuel for long-term energy.

This is the basics of intermittent fasting since the key is to eat in a way that sustains you and keeps you from snacking between meals. Even if you don’t practice intermittent fasting as a way of eating, I believe everyone can benefit from knowing which foods can help us maintain a healthy weight and ultimately maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

And what happens when you get so fed up doing loads of cardio and not seeing the desired results?🥴⁣

Don’t get me wrong..I am not saying that you shouldn’t do any cardio at all. Cardio is great for cardiovascular health and aiding in your fitness journey.⁣
✘All I’m saying is that it is NOT the only answer.✘⁣

You should NOT be walking into the gym and heading straight for the treadmill or elliptical every time you workout. If your goal is to lose fat and gain a more toned body, you need to pick up those weights and spend LESS time on the cardio machines.🏋️‍♀️⁣

Resistance training actually helps to boost your metabolic rate.🙌⁣
When you increase your metabolic rate, your body will actually burn MORE calories while at complete rest. How cool is that⁉️ Your body will continue to burn calories even after you’ve stopped your workout.⁣

During cardio only workouts your body will actually lose fat AND muscle...as opposed to lifting weights where your body will preserve or build muscle while also shedding fat.⁣

Trust me...you want to keep that muscle on your body! (Don’t worry ladies, you will NOT get bulky! That is a myth that needs to go away. It takes REALLY hard work and dedication and a LOT of food to ever get even close to bulky for us women.)⁣

That muscle will help keep your metabolism up and give you that “toned” look we all want as the fat falls off.⁣

The other day I read a great article in @selfmagazine about inclusivity in the health and wellness world. I’ve spoken before on here about privilege and how I hope to create an inclusive space through authenticity and vulnerability- to empower others to find their personal sense of balance, whatever that looks like or whatever that includes. But I know that my platform may not resonate with all individuals, even if they have also experienced orthorexia nervosa. They may not see themselves or their story reflected on my page. I want to better showcase the true individuality of health and wellness on here, so to do so, I’m going to bring back #wellnesswednesdays in which I feature a variety of individuals in this sphere with different culinary, exercise, and overall health backgrounds/approaches, and I’m going to start sharing more user generated content for those who use #straighttothebutze. Overall, I want to be more mindful of different approaches and practices, ones that will truly help empower individuals to discover balance. I WORE “BUSY” AS A BADGE OF HONOR⁣

Just last year I was running myself ragged, trying to do ALL the things and still come up on top. I was a hardcore type A achiever. There wasn't an achievement or certificate I met that I didn't want. I thrived on people congratulating me on my busyness and I was willing to sacrifice myself time and time again to get that feedback. ⁣
⁣
It wasn't until the moment that my husband and I started fostering that things began to break. My cup wasn't just full, it was overflowing. I now had two little babies to take care of and they didn't care what achievement I was trying to get or how busy I was. Not to mention that my relationships now didn't just fit in the cracks, there were no longer any cracks available. ⁣
⁣
My anxiety and stress were at their worst and I could feel myself struggling but my pride wouldn't let me ask for help. It wasn't until I had a REAL talk with my husband that I made the decision to leave work and focus mainly on these babies and my family. It worked for a little while but something was still missing.⁣
⁣
Until one day I came across a post about wellness and how the core areas of our wellness can dramatically impact us. And I realized that I didn't take care of a single one of them. I was stressed, I was anxious, I'd left my job, and still nothing. So I figured why not. Let's try it. ⁣
⁣
I got RUTHLESS with my schedule and I got rid of everything on there that I didn't enjoy or didn't serve a purpose. I still wanted to fill the spaces because that's just my nature. But now I was filling it with things that served me like spending time with my husband and foster babies, moving my body, fueling my body with nutrition, participating in activities with the people I love, and even reading more books. ⁣
⁣
I'm no longer busy for the sake of being busy. Instead my schedule is FULL of all the ways I'm creating the life I want. ⁣
⁣

Today let's talk about infusions. As in loose-leaf tea infusions. Steeped for several hours or overnight to pull all the minerals from the herbs into the water, tea infusions have been my go-to postpartum. When I first had Nevi I drank lots of red raspberry leaf and nettle. Red raspberry is great for balancing female hormones and nettle is high in iron and many other minerals essential for breastfeeding mamas. These days I have been combining lemon balm and oatstraw for my daily tea infusion. Lemon balm is anti-viral, great for cold and flu season. It is also good for managing anxiety. Oatstraw is also calming and grounding. As soon as I take a sip of it I can feel my muscles relax. .
Infusions are such a fun way to learn about different herbs! I buy mine in bulk at Natural Grocers, but you can also find them at other health food stores or online through places like Mountain Rose Herbs. When I buy new herbs I think about how I am feeling and what I am drawn to. Your body is smart and knows what it needs! .
This teapot has a built in strainer inside of it, which is perfect for infusions. You could also just use a mason jar and put a tea strainer full of herbs in it, cover it with a cloth to steep.
