Happy Happy World Smile Day !. .
- Did you know, incidentally that we recently received trademark notices through @etsy requesting us to remove the word ‘smiley’ from all of our product descriptions.
Has this world gone completely mad to make it on lawful to commercially use a word which describes one of the most fundamental of human emotions and expressions.?
So now this bestselling dress has been renamed sunshine dress with ‘smiling’ face.
And yet, international law makes it impossible in some countries to challenge those who continue to counterfeit original design IP. @anti.copying.in.design .
Everything Wild Things design is made here in the UK, supporting some of the oldest traditional suppliers through to new innovative fabric developers . Even our traditional jaquard labels are made in our tiny village @ukweavingmill All this means we can deliver exciting design and high quality with an efficient turnaround.
For me, that makes me very proud to be drawing on skills and tradition, and to share our passion .
We love championing shopping local and sharing all the UK indie clothing brands and fabric companies the UK has to offer including fellow Etsy and @notonthehighstreet makers ! to larger scale heritage companies.
If you are a established or aspiring British made brand check out the @makeitbritish #mibforum Nov2nd in Huddersfield where you can learn more from leading experts and share in an exciting one-day event . Organised by the fabulous @katehills and team, this is about celebrating our heritage craftsmanship without resorting to waving the Union Jack!
WORKSPACE- I have a flexible working space which is centred around one large loft size home studio.I have a cutting table, which only needs to be small as everything I make is in small sizes!
Computer desk -For designing prints and managing orders –and storage, as well as space for two industrial machines and a second table for making and packing.( out of picture)
All of my stock and fabrics are stored separately in another room to free up space - And I of course work with my amazing small workshop in Scotland who house most of my stock fabrics so that we have a tight rolling programme of production to meet demand. ( Proudly UK made - check out @makeitbritish)
I try to keep the studio light and colourful with space for ongoing design development which I can pick up whenever I need- in between managing everyday business tasks. It’s also important , however small or large your space to keep things organised as best you can.
Most of the time I have multiple projects going on which might include sampling, photography or magazine tutorial work – so I need to keep organised.

PHOTOGTAPHY- Here are a few behind-the-scenes shots of my photography – basically I work on many levels from quick iPhonography to professional shoots – I started with very little knowledge and the friends Nikon D 80 and some clever photoshop trickery to remove un wanted household bits and bobs from the frame.
I met the brilliant #WillShaddockPhotography when my daughter was asked to model a shoot for @cosatto
We’ve worked together ever since with the husband and wife team Will Shaddock and Jen Murdoch styling my book shoots and more.
📷 Top left my new amazing Fuji XT2 @fujifilm_uk which I love because of its high function and retro looks - there is a great viewfinder which flips out perfect for overhead flat lays- I use this for general studio photography. 📷 Top Right- Jen working on a larger than life overhead flatlay back in 2016. 📷 Bottom left – using simple props to create context to keep the dresses the main focus - 📷 bottom right - home studio shoot for Kirstie Allsopp’s handmade Christmas .
Oh and day-to-day photography with my iPhone 6 Plus and some really easy editing tools from the @acolorstory app - which I love.
#marchmeetthemaker Day 5 -
In short keep it simple and consistent adding simple props using a palette that suits your brand.
So today is the first day of Spring and we’re knee deep in snow. It’s also the start of #marchmeetthemaker with @joannehawker with a prompt a day to share something unique about yourself or business if you love to make, sew, illustrate, doodle, knit.....
So whatever you do it’s a great way to connect with new like minded creatives. So this is me... the mum and creative designer behind the small and special UK made brand Wild Things.
I love to create playful happy clothes and accessories to spark little one’s imaginations- and here to my right is my little mini me muse.( her legs don’t match I know , ...but we like that)
If you’re joining in, drop me a line below and say hello....
Have you ever longed to start your own brand and work towards a better work life balance?
Working with skilled make it in the UK has meant keeping head creating exciting new designs and fabrics whilst maintaining high quality – & also means working with the best resources the UK has to offer.
When I began in the fashion industry it was the time of huge change and decline of UK manufacturing in favour of overseas production.
@etsy @etsyuk and @notonthehighstreet have been the perfect platforms to start the journey.
Unnecessary over consumption and a need for products with more sustainable and transparent production has made the UK and it’s now growing specialist skill base the perfect place to start a new brand.
You can read more about how I started over @makeitbritish .

Here's my story- After a career designing for children for the UK market, lots of travel and a jet set lifestyle followed by lecturing degree students for 10 years, i settled for a life of raising three wild things on the edge of beautiful woodland. Now busy as ever I involve my three children in decision making for my business( well not the critical stuff) to inspire me as I dream up new designs. They love to dress up, so this was the perfect start. Here we are den building in the woods tails and all for a shoot for #etsy . This is my story #maverickmum photo by Will Shaddock. #mystory#craftbusiness#smallbusiness#foxcostume#wildthingscoat#wearthewildthingsare
