This is going to be my first review on here. We're talking about Higher Power. I always walk past a redbox machine at work and this title caught my eye, never heard about it, seen a trailer, nothing. I rented it regardless because I thought the artwork looked pretty interesting. As I'm watching it I got subtle hints of Akira, The Matrix, and The Watchmen all in one, now with a budget of only 500,000 schmackeroonies you would expect very little of a movie in this age of trillion dollar films. My expectations were completely blown away and I caught myself wanting to buy this movie half way into the plot. The effects were unreal for such a small budget, this could, and should have been in theaters worldwide.
Let's begin with the plot now that I've began the intro to my thoughts. A star in space is on the verge of collapse, that star is going to be crushed by the sheer intensity of gravity, like squeezing a tomato in the middle, you're going to get a gush of juice (that's what she said), or in the case of the star, pure plasma energy and if it hits our little blue planet, we're done. Now the Akira-matrix-watchmen parts come into play as one man, Joseph Steadman (Ron Eldard). This man has had a pretty rough go as of late, death of his wife, kids want nothing to do with him, and had a pretty bad time with alcohol, as well as therapy for anger management. That part comes into play drastically towards the end of the film. Joseph ends up getting kidnapped by a shady company, the one he actually works for as a security guard, having to do all sorts of tasks that involve him attempting murder, thievery, and more, all of this to keep his also kidnapped daughter from being shot.
The film then amps it up as Joseph's one last trial is to step into a machine which is what begins the journey of said Akirs-Matrix-Watchmen situations. I will not delve into this because it is almost too impossible to explain. I highly suggest watching this movie, people who are high will absolutely love it, people who are sober will probably want to be high to fully grasp it.
