Lombok island as the sun rises across the volcanoes. Hard to believe that only a couple of months ago the area was by devastating earthquakes killing hundreds of people and destroying homes. This view is from Gili Air and everything is business as usual. Most people who work here are from Lombok and have family there so when they can will head home to help with the continuous cleanup taking place. Tourist numbers are well down which is the livelihood for most people here. Still they go about their day with the biggest smile and greeting for anyone who they come into contact with such is the resilience of the locals.
It is a stark reminder that all our problems really aren’t that bad compared to what some people are going through.
I have talked about my triumphs and accomplishments throughout this contract but the struggles are what made me stronger and come out with a different perspective on how precious life is!!🙌🏽 from volcanoes, 🔥☄️🌋 to hurricanes 🌊💨 to having two family members pass away during my first contract there were days I was scared, sad, and didn’t know if I could make it but I dug deep and pushed through found a new strength within myself I didn’t know I had not just physical but mental and spiritual as well... I’m so proud of myself 😊😬🤙🏽 and happy I get to spend time with my family those are the moments that mean something
Selfie time - me inside the crater of a volcano. Whats special about this particular volcano is it has the highest levels of sulphur in the world, and when it’s exposed to oxygen and lit by the lava it turns blue . This phenomenon can only be seen in the dark hours of night. Which is why I made the 2km hike up to the crater and then a 1km hike down into the crater itself. This is the only time, my camera bag has included a gas mask. Not your usual photography trip thats for sure. The crater also has the worlds largest sulphuric acid lake. It ’s not a place you want to make mistakes in. People work here mining the sulphur, it’s one of the toughest jobs on the planet. Their life expectancy is mid to late thirties. The outside of the crater is just as impressive with scorched trees everywhere due to the vast amount of lightning strikes this place takes. Overall it’s an other-worldly place and I’d go back in a heartbeat. ______
So for what feels like the three millionth time in my parenting career we have done the volcano experiment 😂
I was a little apprehensive doing a project with both the 13yo and the 3yo together. But it has gone really really well, so much talking and cooperation between them, and an exercise in patience for P!
Today The Small One and I watched a ton of videos about volcanoes. The Middle One stuck to his book what with being far too mature for today's shenanigans 😉 and then we finished off our paper maché masterpiece and made it go boom.
Kinda. More of an ooze isn't it? 🤣
The Small One also drew a picture for your enjoyment 😂😂😂 #beingthree#homeeducation#homeed#toddlercrafting#volcanoes#homeedproject#homeschooling#geography#homeshoolgeography#homeschoolscience#teensandtoddlers

Vida pura!

Resting with a view of the volcano I was about to conquer - the Banda Api. At only 640 m, you would think its an easy hike. Actually, it was comparably difficult to volcanoes I climbed that were over 3000 m. This was due to several things - 1. The terrain is difficult with the path eroded by rains; 2. The whole climb is done in extreme heat and humidity, so you become dehydrated easily; 3. Spiderwebs complicating your focus so you easily become startled and slip. Anyway, the aerial view of Banda islands you get from the top is a more than sufficient reward to go for it! Full information about how to prepare for Banda Api on planettoexplore.com. Follow to get more stories, but also lots of practical information about unusual travel places! #hiking#exploration#travelblogger#bandaislands#nofilter#story#volcanoes#liveauthentic#discoverearth
