In March of 2017, armed with spikes, we took the winter trek to the preikestolen - the pulpit rock on the lysefjord. It is one of norway's most famous attractions and a nice trek, even in winter - for those not afraid of the ice and cold.

September 2nd part 2/2

First up was ascending to the ridge between the Hesten peaks, after which I carried on to the southwestern peak. Until then I'd only hiked 2 km but ascended 530 meters, which means an average incline of 26.5%. In other words after only 2 kilometers hiking/climbing the views had become just breathtaking! From here I could look back to where I came from and admire the fjord along with the mountains on the other side. Or I could twist my head a little bit to the right and see the majestic Segla. A bit more to the right and the next fjord over with more mountains on the other side. Finally turning further right still and I could see more peaks stretching out like knuckles on the finger that is Øyfjordvær. Since I didn't see a trail on any map for the trail I was supposed to hike, I went for the trail marked out in my Topographical map app. It went from the southwestern peak and followed the edge of the cliff all the way to where I was going. It wasn't exactly a well walked trail as I could only see worn down vegetation occasionally in the beginning, and less and less as I carried on. Not only that but the "trail" was right next to a steep fall to a guaranteed death some 500 meters down (you can follow the the ridge in the photo above) and some of the rocks were loose and some of the vegetation as well. The soles of my Altras (shoes) have been worn out after the heavy use of this summer so they are nowhere near as grippy as they were. I slipped a couple of times, and after making my way down steeper and steeper cliffs while watching the sky get darker, I made the decision to choose my safety, and went back. I went back along the ridge and gave the northeastern Hesten peak a shot, but also reached cliffs I didn't feel I could safely pass.
On the way back down I decided that I'll come back here with grippier shoes and the proper trail marked up to explore more because it's an incredible place. I went down to the village restaurant, where I was told it was good that I turned back because that route is dangerous af. Had fish and chips with bacon 😍, a waffle and a chocolate milkshake and was recommended a camp spot down by the water.

Journey journal: Northern Sweden and Norway
Traveled so far: 2187 km biking + 602 km hiking
Day 83 Finnsnes - Fjordgård
59 km biking & 6 km hiking

I got off the ship at around 4:30, took a while to get everything in order in the rain, and left Finnsnes around 5:30 and started cycling the east coast of the island Senja. It rained a lot and was windy and cold so I took a long break in a sheltered bus stop waiting it out. Senja is often referred to as a miniature version of Norway in that it's only a small island but has many of Norway ecosystems and types of landscape contained in it. I agree, and when the weather has cleared up some and I got further west on the island is when things got more dramatic to the dismay of my thighs and the enjoyment of my eyes. After the biggest climb the was a long downhill slope through a poorly lit tunnel, and when I got out on the other side I was starting out at a gorgeous fjord that was way deeper than any I've seen so far. A hundred meters down the road was another tunnel, but the old dirt road outside of the tunnel looked more tempting so I took that. Carved out of the mountain, it ran next to and above the water. As if the view on this road wasn't a reward in itself for my choice, an eagle burst out from 20 meters ahead of me and crossed the fjord. I stopped for a few minutes to watch it soar over the fjord, getting higher and higher until it passed the mountaintop on the other side of the fjord. What an incredible feeling it would be to do that!

I carried on to the town Fjordgård, where I parked my bicycle and put on the trail runners to do some hiking. I was going to summit Segla but was recommended by a local to do another hike that was further out on the peninsula. He showed me a video that some people had recorded of their hike, and I was supposed to do the same one.

Flam, Norway

Flåm is a village in southwestern Norway, in an area known for its fjords. It sits at the end of Aurlandsfjord, a branch of the vast Sognefjord. The dramatic Stegastein viewing platform juts out high above the Aurlandsfjord. South of Flåm Harbor, the 17th-century wooden Flåm Church lies in the valley. The Flåm Railway offers valley and waterfall views as it climbs to a station on the Hardangervidda plateau.

Fin sti heile vegen! Mange vel å snu her. Det brukar å gå geiter oppi her, men møtte dei ikkje idag.
No blir det oftast fleire turar i veka, året gjennom.
