“How gently, too, did the sight of the Old Manse, best seen from the river, overshadowed with its willow and all environed about with the foliage of its orchard and avenue,—how gently did its gray, homely aspect rebuke the speculative extravagances of the day!” Nathaniel Hawthorne, The Old Manse, 1846
One of my favorite parts of my trip back East was our visit to the Old Manse. Walking around the peaceful site where Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote his essay “Nature,” and where Nathaniel Hawthorne lived with his wife for the initial years of their marriage, one would never guess that the first violent battle of the Revolutionary War was fought mere steps from the front door. Save for the concrete monuments marking the site of the “shot heard ‘round the world,” it was unimaginable that blood was shed near the lazy river, under those quiet willows. Perhaps, despite the irony, the fact that the Battle of Concord took place in that very spot was the reason for its tranquility: in these dark and uncertain times in our country, I found peace in knowing that the liberty and truth for which many men there died will prevail in the end.
It’s the perfect Friday for the Oak Bluffs summer fireworks.

Savoy, Mass. ~ "Write it on your heart
that every day is the best day in the year. He is rich who owns the day. ... This new day is too dear,
with its hopes and invitations,
to waste a moment on the yesterdays." -- Ralph Waldo Emerson
