For those 87 million people probably wondering what was actually done with their data, I went back to Christopher Wylie, the ex-Cambridge Analytica employee who blew the whistle on the company’s problematic operations in the Observer. According to Wylie, all you need to know is a little bit about data science, a little bit about bored rich women, and a little bit about human psychology.

Step one, he says, over the phone as he scrambles to catch a train: - When you’re building an algorithm, you first need to create a training set. That is: no matter what you want to use fancy data science to discover, you first need to gather the old-fashioned way. Before you can use Facebook likes to predict a person’s psychological profile, you need to get a few hundred thousand people to do a 120-question personality quiz.

The “training set” refers, then, to that data in its entirety: the Facebook likes, the personality tests, and everything else you want to learn from. Most important, it needs to contain your “feature set”: - The underlying data that you want to make predictions on, Wylie says. - In this case, it’s Facebook data, but it could be, for example, text, like natural language, or it could be clickstream data – the complete record of your browsing activity on the web. - Those are all the features that you want to [use to] predict. At the other end, you need your target variables, the things that you’re trying to predict for. So in this case, personality traits or political orientation, or what have you.

They say “The surest way to make your dreams come true is to live them”. @kakslauttanen_arctic_resort is everyones dream transmuted to reality.
Imagine a place where there are a zillion stars over your head, as if some constellations have just been born to grace your crown, where there is just the richness of forest and the mystical hum of the night falling quietly over the land of glass igloos. Where sleep eavesdrops on your dreams and where jaws drop when the northern lights pierce the sky like shards of heaven. In simple words this peace of paradise is just where the simple becomes surreal.

- Bannon got it immediately. He believes in the whole Andrew Breitbart doctrine that politics is downstream from culture, so to change politics you need to change culture. And fashion trends are a useful proxy for that. Trump is like a pair of Uggs, or Crocs, basically. So how do you get from people thinking ‘Ugh. Totally ugly’ to the moment when everyone is wearing them? That was the inflection point he was looking for.

Is what Cambridge Analytica does akin to bullying? - I think it’s worse than bullying, Christopher Wylie says. - Because people don’t necessarily know it’s being done to them. At least bullying respects the agency of people because they know. So it’s worse, because if you do not respect the agency of people, anything that you’re doing after that point is not conducive to a democracy. And fundamentally, information warfare is not conducive to democracy.

Millions of people’s personal information was stolen and used to target them in ways they wouldn’t have seen, and couldn’t have known about, by a mercenary outfit, Cambridge Analytica, who, Wylie says, “would work for anyone”. Who would pitch to Russian oil companies. Would they subvert elections abroad on behalf of foreign governments?

It occurs to me to ask Wylie this one night. - Yes.

Nato or non-Nato? - Either. I mean they’re mercenaries. They’ll work for pretty much anyone who pays.

It’s an incredible revelation. It also encapsulates all of the problems of outsourcing – at a global scale, with added cyberweapons. And in the middle of it all are the public – our intimate family connections, our “likes”, our crumbs of personal data, all sucked into a swirling black hole that’s expanding and growing and is now owned by a politically motivated billionaire.

Christopher Wylie, the whistleblower who exposed the widespread misuse of data by his former employer, Cambridge Analytica, has revealed how the company “weaponised” the fashion industry in the run up to the 2016 US election, which he claims helped Donald Trump get elected.

Speaking at the annual BoF Voices festival in Oxfordshire, Wylie revealed for the first time a matrix based on data collected by the firm which he claims can show how users’ preferences for particular brands on social media platforms – Facebook, in particular – were then used to help target these same users with pro-Trump messaging. He compared the misuse of fashion-based data as one of the campaign’s lesser reported “weapons of mass destruction”. - They [Cambridge Analytica] looked at actual people. How they engaged with certain brands was put into a funnel and helped build the algorithms, Wylie explained. - When you look at personality traits, music and fashion are the most informative [tools] for predicting someone’s personality. A user’s predilection for a particular label gives, he said, a very clear indication of what reports often call “populist political signalling”. Cambridge Analytica, which was shut down earlier this year following an investigation by the Observer, was the political marketing firm headed by Trump’s former key adviser, Steve Bannon, and owned by hedge-fund billionaire Robert Mercer. It also used user information obtained without authorisation in early 2014 – including cultural preferences such as fashion and music – to create a system that could single out voters in order to expose them to specific political advertising.

Wylie said that Bannon's plans began to solidify in 2014, when Cambridge Analytica consulted various Republican campaigns and PACs ahead of the midterm elections. The company began to test and apply its psychographics by using Facebook data to model individuals' personality types in order to understand how to influence them.

Documents show the John Bolton Super PAC, which promoted candidates supported by recently appointed White House national security adviser John Bolton, paid Cambridge Analytical $454,700 in 2014 for "behavioral microtargeting with psychographic messaging." Those services included strategies that broke individual voters into "clusters" based on what messages would resonate with them.

Wylie also said the company used focus groups and messaging trials in 2014 to test some of the concepts that became core themes of the Trump campaign, such as "drain the swamp" and imagery of walls. "A lot of the narratives of the Trump campaign were what we were testing in 2014," Wylie said.

He added that Bannon directly presided over much of the company's initial research. "Everything that we were doing ultimately had to be passed up to Bannon for approval," said Wylie, who left the company in late 2014.

Wylie said Bannon would fly to London about once a month for company meetings, and during that time he came to understand Bannon's ideology. "He really liked the idea of using a military-style approach to changing people's perceptions," Wylie said.

Bannon wanted to use the sorts of aggressive messaging tactics usually reserved for geopolitical conflicts to move the US electorate further to the right, Wylie said. He had already directed a series of anti-establishment, conservative documentary films and presided over the far-right website Breitbart News, but Cambridge Analytica would mark another step in his overall ambitions to transform the nation.

With financial backing from hedge-fund billionaire Robert Mercer, Bannon co-founded Cambridge Analytica in 2013 as the US-branch of Strategic Communication Laboratories (SCL) Group, a British company that advertises how it has conducted "behavioral change" programs in more than 60 countries.

Wylie described Cambridge Analytica as - Steve Bannon and Robert Mercer using a foreign, military contractor ... to use some of the same techniques that the military uses ... on the American electorate.

One week to our trip to Lapland for christmas!😍
In his first post-White House interviews, Steve Bannon, the rightwing ideologue who helped propel Donald Trump to the White House, made clear that he had no intention of going quietly. - I’ve got my hands back on my weapons, the former White House chief strategist, who returned as executive chairman of Breitbart News late Friday afternoon, told the Weekly Standard. - I built a f***ing machine at Breitbart. And now I’m about to go back, knowing what I know, and we’re about to rev that machine up. And rev it up we will do.

Just hours after his departure from the Trump administration became public, Breitbart, whose traffic and advertising have fallen significantly since Trump’s election, trumpeted the return of their “populist hero” on its homepage. - The populist-nationalist movement got a lot stronger today, Breitbart editor-in-chief Alex Marlow said in the publication’s announcement post. - Breitbart gained an executive chairman with his finger on the pulse of the Trump agenda.

The fall of Steve Bannon is a win for the globalists. But will it last?

Also on Friday, the once-again head of Breitbart told Bloomberg News: - If there’s any confusion out there, let me clear it up: I’m leaving the White House and going to war for Trump against his opponents – on Capitol Hill, in the media, and in corporate America.

The 63-year-old also retains the backing of hedge-fund billionaire Robert Mercer. The pair met on Wednesday to plot their future plans, Bloomberg reported.

🎄 Lapland Day 5 🎅

We started the day with a visit to @pilketalo a forestry museum a short walk from the centre of Rovaniemi. The kids had a great time as it taught them about everyday packaging and recycling in a fun way.
Just next door is @arktikumofficial we spent a while in here as the kids especially Cillian really liked some of the exhibitions such as the one on the greenhouse effect and the polar pollution exhibition.
We then got a bus out to @santaclausmainpostoffice to post postcards I sent to kids after Santa gave me personal messages for them!

The Snowmobile museum is a small museum at the edge of the village and it's free to enter.
The best time to visit @santaclausoffice is between 4-7pm because the tour buses are gone by then. There were 2 families in front of us when we went in at 6pm. It was the best santa visit we've ever had, he was so friendly and relaxed with the kids chatting away but the face on Cillian when he produced his Santa letter that he'd only posted the evening before was priceless. *Pinch myself moment, as I was press I got to take as many photos as I liked and they also gave us the photos and video of our visit.
We stayed around the village to get some photos as the last bus leaves about 6pm so the place empties out. The kids had a blast playing in the free to use sleighs. I brought marshmallows and skewers with us and we had a lovely time roasting them on one of the fires still lighting at Wild Nordic. We had to get two taxi's back to Rovaniemi as my brother and his wife @passportsandadventures were with us with their son. They cost us €29 & €25.
We ended the evening with another meal at Rosso as we all enjoyed it the previous night. I couldn't believe it when the families at the tables on either side of us said hi and let me know the only reason they were there was because they read the blog! .

🎄 Lapland Day 5 🎅 We started the day with a visit to @pilketalo a forestry museum a short walk from the centre of Rovaniemi. I couldn't believe it when the families at the tables on either side of us said hi and let me know the only reason they were there was because they read the blog! . . . . #travelblogger  #diylapland  #laplandonabudget  #visitrovaniemi  #visitfinland  #mumofsix  #mumsontherun  #igerslapland  #igersfinland  #instasanta  #therealsanta  #arcticcircle  #howto

Wanhan Raahen Joulukalenteri 2018

Ikkuna 14

Brahenkatu 14, vanhusten toimintakeskus Kreivinaika

Rosa Johanna Margareta (o.s. Borg 1857-1928) Sovelius osti talon Lovisa Franzénin kuoltua 1800-luvun lopussa. Hän asui talossa kuolemaansa asti.

Good morning! ☀️
This wake-up light is a game changer, since the polar night is starting in two days. It means we won't see the sun above the horizon for two weeks, so we need an artificial sun in our kitchen!

We had some troubles with our Webasto heater, so we bought another electrical heater. Now it's warm (even hot) all the time, even though the outside temperature is already around -15.

What's better than waking up to bright light and music, in a cozy and warm mini home? 😍 Are your mornings cold and dark, or like this?
.
Huomenta! ☀️
