This is water x water, where the healing flows liquid warm and tangible, and the salt of the ocean is the salt in my eyes. We shed the shyness & shame we were taught and let our bodies be wholly whatever they are. No layers, no armor between our skin and the world, our skin and the wet, bright air. Maybe it’s uncomfortable. Then it starts to feel more normal than anything else in the world, and we come back once, twice, three times a day if we can wrangle it. Breath of waves, dance of light from the surface of water ripples, sea otter sightings, sighs. I’ve brought it all to these tubs: glee, childish wonder, resistance, shame, prayers, wells of tears for a grief that seems to know no bottom, my holy and imperfect nakedness 🍑. Its all welcome, raw and waiting, mixing with sulphur and ancestral earthly magic until it alkalizes into something more akin to womb than water.
We knew we were going to the beach but didn't really prepare for it 🤦🏻♀️ No sandals/flip flops, shorts for the kids, nothing to sit on or towels. Wow guys...that is what happens when you leave spontaneously.

I’m a big proponent of staying in hostels as a solo female traveler. It’s a great way to meet people, stay social, and take advantage of day trips and free events that you may not have heard about from staying in a hotel or AirBnB.
I’m always surprised when I meet people who say they’d never stay in a hostel because they deem it unsafe, dirty, loud etc. The thing is, hostels have grown to be so much more than the negative cliches that people still tend to label them as. The variety these days is astounding.
And what’s even better? When a hostel goes beyond creating a safe, welcoming, and instagram-worthy space to stay in, and really tries to make the world a better place.
Case-in-point, HI’s City Center Hostel in downtown San Francisco. This hostel is not only brimming with personality, but is a leader in effective sustainable tourism - something that has become increasingly important to a lot of travelers, myself included, with the realities of global warming and our planet’s dwindling resources.
HI SF City Center not only installed solar panels earlier this year, but they’re also the pilot hostel for the ‘#MillionGallonChallenge that @HIUSA is kicking off on World Water Day on March 22nd.
The challenge involves HI installing over 700 Hydrao shower heads in hostels across the US, which change color to let you know how much water you’ve used.
They’re estimating these shower heads will help shave off 30 seconds of shower time for each guest. 30 seconds is equal to about 1 gallon of water. With 1 million guests per year, they’re projecting that 1 million gallons of water will be saved.
Pretty cool, right?! It’s so important to support businesses in the travel industry who are ‘extra’ in the right ways, especially when it comes to sustainable tourism, and HI is proving to be a leader on this front.

Let me know - is sustainable tourism important to you? Have you stayed at a HI hostel before?

This place was an amazing trip and experience everyone needs to try. I saw tons of dolphins and a few whales. The weather was beautiful and all the people that were on the boat were extremely nice!
If you have any questions about this trip, ask away! 🧡 HAPPY MONDAY
