#tbt to our original blueprints! We spent some time at the wonderful @libraryofva researching the history of our building, and found many of the blueprints by architect Louis W. Ballou. Built in 1939, this art moderne structure first housed the Curles Neck Dairy sales and distribution center, and the original building was only one story, with a much smaller footprint than what you see today. Oh, how we’ve grown!

The McIlwaine House in Petersburg, Virginia was built in 1794 by Erasmus Gill, who fought in the Revolutinary War. The Federal-style frame home was also home to George H. Jones, Mayor of Petersburg, and is named for Archibald Graham McIlwaine, a Petersburg industrialist and financier who lived there from 1837-78. The McIlwaine family continued to live in the home until 1971 when it was moved several blocks to its present location to avoid demolition. The home sat empty for 37 years and was then carefully restored and repaired as part of Old Towne Petersburg. A unique feature of the home is that the interior is made entirely of wood, with no plaster ornamentation used in the detailed designs. The Smithsonian credits the parlor, called the Petersburg Room, as one of the most outstanding rooms of woodwork in America. The home is also famous for being feautured in the movie, "Lincoln," and AMC's Revolutionary War series, "Turn." #southernreverie

The South Side Depot in Petersburg, Virginia served the South Side Railroad line. This was the last railroad left operating during the Siege of Petersburg during the Civil War. Union troops eventually severed the rail line which led to the end of the war through the surrender of Petersburg and Richmond. Following the war, the Depot became a center for politial development in Viriginia. The Readjuster Party was founded in 1879 as a biracial coalition party to address the incredible amount of debt Virginia had accrued. William Mahone, an American civil engineer, railroad executive, and Confederate General is credited with forming and leading the Readjuster Party. His office was in the South Side Depot.

Though it was short-lived, the Readjuster Party was one of the most radical reforming political parties in Virginia's history winning many of the statewide offices and majorities in both houses. The party sought to "readjust" the state debt, repeal the poll tax which suppressed voting by blacks and poor whites, and increase spending for schools and other public facilities. To accomplish this they formed a coalition based on fairness and economic progress that included white farmers, African Americans, working men, Democrats, and Republicans. Accomplishments of the Readjuster Party include the establishment of the Virginia Normal and Collegiate Institute (now Virigina State University), Virginia's first public college for African-Americans. #southernreverie

National Museum of African American History and Culture.
We started our morning off waiting in line with two Black women from England who encouraged our young ladies to travel and even took the time discuss culture and social customs on the other side of the pond. The next surprise was as we were walking in, the ladies and I commented on how heavy the doors are to which the lady behind us informed us that she and her team designed the doors and all of the glass work for the museum. We all had a good laugh; what an amazing start to our tour. The kids were able to explore the History of African Americans from the Motherland to Emmett Till, to the swearing in of Barak Obama. We also learned our group was pretty popular, a few adults decided to stick with our group for the rest of the self guided tour. While there we heard languages from all of the world. The most difficult thing to watch, was people trying to translate the horrors and atrocities our ancestors faced. We are so blessed!

Week 3 Day 4 John Marshall House, Lunch @ VMFA, & Queena’s exhibit @ VHS.
We started our morning at the John Marshall House. Marshall is credited for establishing judicial review. Mid day we enjoyed lunch amongst the garden sculptures at VMFA. Lastly, we ended the day with a local exhibit on Queens an artist who started painting her life in the Blue Ridge Mountains at the age of 62. I also learned that my family owns a copy of one of her paintings ❤️. You can be inspired at any age!

Week 3 Day 3 Agecroft Hall

Today the scholars and I toured Agecroft Hall. Agecroft as well as the Virginia House were homes brought over from England in an effort to conserve history and create a neighborhood that housed homes either built in their liking or from England its self. The home provided us insight into Tudor England and it’s customs. We learned that a cat in the wall was placed for good luck and to ward off evil spirits. We also saw hiding spaces for the family priest (c. Henry VIII), and one of the most beautiful gardens we’ve ever seen. Photos are not allowed in the home, but the memories are definitely worth making! Adventure awaits!!! #summerlearning #nannyadventuresrva #history #learningawaits #NARVA804 #whatdidyoulearntoday #education #fieldtrips #virginiahistory #summerfun #tutor #visit #bringingbookstolife #travel #whatdidyoulearntoday #plantseeds #captured #photography #capturethemoment #seizetheday #history #summerfun #adventure #studentadventures #familyfriendly #outwithkids #learningwithchildren

John Adams drank it for breakfast every morning. Thomas Jefferson planted 18 varieties for it at Monticello. Serving it on the campaign trail helped get George Washington elected, and thanks to Johnny Appleseed, tons of households made their own! Week 3 Day 2 Wilton House
Today the scholars and I toured the Wilton house. The Wilton house is a historical plantation circa 1700’s. The home was once located near Osborne Landing and was later moved to it’s current location in an effort to preserve the home and offer tours. We are so thankful to that group of history preservers It is very important to study all sides of history, at the Wilton House we looked at and discussed the “southern way of life” and its impact on our culture and history. Each brick in the walk way was built by slave children. The mat in the bedroom is where the slave slept the actual bed was for the children. The more you know, the more you grow!!! #summerlearning #nannyadventuresrva #history #learningawaits #NARVA804 #whatdidyoulearntoday #education #fieldtrips #virginiahistory #summerfun #tutor #visit #bringingbookstolife #travel #whatdidyoulearntoday #plantseeds #captured #photography #capturethemoment #seizetheday #history #summerfun #adventure #studentadventures #familyfriendly #outwithkids #learningwithchildren

Winchester, Virginia residents suffered greatly during the Civil War, not only because of the occupation of the City by both armies, but also because of the three major battles that were fought here. The third battle of Winchester took place on September 19, 1864, and because of its size, intensity and result, most historians consider it the most important one of the Shenandoah Valley. The battle was fought between Major General Phil Sheridan’s 39,000+ Union forces, and Major General Jubal Early’s 12,000+ Confederate Army. The battle had a very high casualty rate on both sides with the Union dead totaling 5,020 and the Confederate dead being 3,610. Both sides also had an unusually high casualty rate amongst the officer ranks. The Union Army had one General killed and three others seriously wounded while the Confederate Army suffered the loss of two Generals while three others were badly wounded. They also lost two Colonels, one of which was Colonel George S Patton Sr. His grandson and namesake was the famous U.S. World War II General, George S Patton, Jr.
This battle was a decisive victory for the Union and they held Winchester until the end of the war.

Week 3 Day 1 Virginia Historical Society
Today the scholars and I visited the museum @ Virginia Historical Society. There we explored the exhibit on WWI and searched the database (provided by #ancestrycom for ancestors who possibly fought in the war. We did find my Great Grandpa who fought in WWII. We ended our day at a special collection on the history of Virginia from its 1st families up to families today. The students were able to play a game in which you make your escape on the Underground Railroad. After, they talked about the panic, uncertainty, and faith it took to make that voyage. All in all an amazing day of learning!! #summerlearning #nannyadventuresrva #history #learningawaits #NARVA804 #whatdidyoulearntoday #education #fieldtrips #virginiahistory #summerfun #tutor #visit #bringingbookstolife #travel #whatdidyoulearntoday #plantseeds #captured #photography #capturethemoment #seizetheday #history #summerfun #adventure #studentadventures #familyfriendly #outwithkids #learningwithchildren

All in all an amazing day of learning!! #summerlearning  #nannyadventuresrva  #history  #learningawaits  #NARVA804  #whatdidyoulearntoday  #education  #fieldtrips  #virginiahistory  #summerfun  #tutor  #visit  #bringingbookstolife  #travel  #whatdidyoulearntoday  #plantseeds  #captured  #photography  #capturethemoment  #seizetheday  #history  #summerfun  #adventure  #studentadventures  #familyfriendly  #outwithkids  #learningwithchildren

Today I was supremely honored to be elected vice president of the King William, Va Historical Society. I love this special place that has become my home, and hope I can make a meaningful contribution to the Society. Today’s meeting hosted a wonderful speaker, Jay Gaidmore, Director of Special Collections at the Swem Library at William & Mary College. Dr. Gaidmore gave the audience a broad view of the collection and some of its highlights, which include this bible believed to have been owned by John Rolfe. Especially fun to see were a series of photos taken during the Great Depression of many of King William’s once elegant, 18th and early 19th c. homes. Transplants from other places may not fully appreciate just how wealthy and important King William was in earlier centuries. Situated close to Williamsburg, the colonial capital of Virginia, as well as Richmond, KW’s early families were among Va’s aristocracy. North Point’s early owners, for example, were the Roanes, who were related to King Carter, the richest man in Virginia in the 18th c. The Roanes represented the County in the Va House of Burgesses and then early federal congresses. History is bursting here in KW as we collectively and individually learn more about our past each day. I would love to see new members of the Society so we can make this journey together! #virginia #kingwilliamcounty #virginiahistory #johnrolfe #swemlibrary #williamandmarycollege #williamandmary #archives #specialcollections #sacredbooks #historicalsociety #americanhistory #rva #architecturalhistory #domesticarchitecture #bible #oldphotographs #historichome #plantation #library #rarebooks #bookcollections #williamsburg #colonialwilliamsburg

In order that the manufacture of cider may be conducted in a more systematic and scientific manner in this country, it was deemed desirable to study the best processes employed in foreign countries, especially in England, France, and Germany, which are the principal cider producing countries of the world. To this end, Mr. William B. Alwood was employed by the Secretary of Agriculture as a special agent to act under the direction of the Chief of the Bureau of Chemistry, and was detailed to study the actual processes of manufacture in the countries named, as well as to conduct extensive experiments here. - Dr. H.W. Wiley, Chief of the Bureau of Chemistry, U.S. Department of Agriculture, from 1888-1912, qtd. in the preface to "A Study of Cider Making in France, Germany and England, with comments and Comparisons on American Work", 1903, by William B. Westover Parish origniated in 1613 by Jamestown, Virginia colonists. The present Westover Church in Charles City, Viriginia was completed in 1730, it's predecessor dating to 1637. Following the American Revolution, the church suffered a period of decline, was abandoned in 1803, and was even used as a barn for a period of time. In 1833, services were revived and the church building was repaired and restored. During the Civil War Federal troops used the church as a stable. They also removed most of the gravestones to use them as tent floors, which is why the church’s graveyard has no pre-Civil War gravestones today. Confederates heavily shelled the church from nearby since it was being used as a Union base. According to records, only the 135-year-old brick walls and roof remained at the end of the war. The church was once again restored and has been carefully preserved and protected ever since. Five U.S. Presidents have worshiped there including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, and Theodore Roosevelt. Services are still held every Sunday morning. Visiting the peaceful location today, tucked at the end of a farming lane, you can't help but feel gratitude that this small church survived so much and still stands. #southernreverie

The thing that I love most about this city is that when you look beyond the surface there is constantly more to discover. Even though I’ve lived here for quite a few years, I’m always finding more interesting, historical, and charming details around this pretty small city. I went for a short walk downtown today and found even more things to love. When you take the time to slow down and look around at the architecture, charming remnants of the city’s past, and appreciate the people you experience, it’s amazing how much you’ll see. Sadly, some people just see an ordinary town when they visit Lynchburg. But what’s why we do what we do at New in Lynchburg—raise awareness about the amazing things happening here. Not only is the history of this place fascinating, but the city is growing so fast and the future will be great too! ❤️

(Multiple pics) Our "ALHFAMily" museums and people span cultures and eras... it's even more fun when a site spans many cultures, eras, material culture, trades, farming techniques, and building styles within its own walls. . Here, the Frontier Culture Museum of Virginia shows the current flax harvest against a backdrop of its Irish Farm and the stunning summer blue sky. The FCM features the many cultures that shaped Virginia in their own acreage: English, Irish, German, African, Native American and American farms of the 1820s and 1850s. Built in 1830 by the owner of the two adjacent houses, local brickmaker and city council member, John Hollensbury, the miniscule residence was intended to keep horse-drawn wagons and boisterous loiterers out of his alley. By 1830 wagon wheels had carved gouges into the exterior walls of both homes, and Hollensbury had had enough. Many other spite houses exist in the United States, but Alexandria can claim to have the smallest at 7’ wide!

Shirley Plantation is the oldest active farm in Virginia and is the oldest family-owned business in North America. Founded in 1613, farming operations began in 1638 by Edward Hill I. Completed in 1738, the "Great House," has mostly been kept in its original state. The house and farm have been continuously owned and occupied by the descendants of Edward Hill I for twelve generations and over 380 years. They still reside year-round in the home today, on the second and third floors, and manage the farm and the Shirley Plantation Foundation. The three story home was designed in the Georgian style and the first floor is open for tours where you can see the famous "flying staircase" which has no visible supports. Ann Hill Carter was born at Shirley Plantation in 1773. Her father was the fifth generation owner of the plantation. On June 18, 1793 she married Henry "Light Horse Harry" Lee III, Revolutionary War hero and ninth governor of Virginia, in the parlor at Shirley Plantation. The couple were later parents to Confederate General Robert E. Lee. During the Civil War, the plantation was protected by a Federal Order of Safeguard issued by General McClellan after learning that the women at Shirley provided food and medical care to many wounded Union soldiers. #southernreverie

This is the Westmoreland County Estate of the Lee Family, Stratford Hall, on Virginia's Northern Neck. Stratford Hall is one of the most architecturally unique plantations in the state, and was the home of Francis Lightfoot Lee, Richard Henry Lee, Light Horse Harry Lee, and the birthplace of Robert E. Lee. http://ow.ly/8CDJ30kRu30

Thought I’d share another one of my #photographs today. This was taken a few years back on a #foggymorning at Manassas National Battlefield Park. It is a view of Henry House, site of the First Battle of Bull Run.
📷
During the battle, the elderly Judith Henry refused to leave her bedroom on the second floor and was struck by canon fire, becoming the first civilian casualty.

Let us hope our country does not descend into such chaos again.

This is Gunston Hall in Lorton, Virginia. George Mason was one of the most wealthy plantation landowners in slaveowning Virginia, yet his development of the idea of equal and natural rights would eventually inspire the abolitionist movement of the nineteenth century. His ideas had a profound impact on Thomas Jefferson. http://ow.ly/DV0n30kQQ5f
