10 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT VINHO VERDE
📷: Michael Mcduff
1 --The Name Vinho Verde actually comes from the beautiful Green and lush hilly landscape, not the color of the wine.
2 --A seal of guarantee can be found on the back of each Vinho Verde Bottles.
3--The topography of the region is characterized by various rivers and mountains. The soil is mostly made of Granite. The mineral character of some wines is also reminiscent of the textured and grainy side of this type of soil.
4--Fizz or no Fizz that is the question. Historically that fizz was a natural phenomenon from very early bottling, but it wasn’t very stable. This trend is actually slowly disappearing as producers don’t bestow much importance to that aspect.
5--Vinho Verde has 9 distinctive sub-regions throughout its extensive land. While Monção & Melgaço, king of the Alvarinho, is the only one getting some recognition, other tends to also have specificity that can help you find a style that suits you.
Loureiro is the most planted grape variety of the whole region. It can be found all around but specifically in the sub-regions of Lima, Cávado and Ave.
Baião sub-region is home to the best example of Avesso.
Basto region, in central-east, is known for a substantial use of the Azal variety.
6--At some point in history, vines were only considered a secondary crop. Fields were used for corn and crops forcing vine growers to be creative. Special training systems were used to take advantages of what little place was available. Pergolas (locally known as Ramadas) were used to overlap other crops.
7--Vinho Verde is meant to be drunk young. Most of the production is bottled while fermentation just finished. However, this doesn’t mean none of them are suitable for ageing.
8--Vinho Verde does produces mostly whites (85%), but there’s rosé and reds as well.
9--Producers have the possibility to submit their wines to a tasting panel within the Vinho Verde commission to obtain the escolha or Grand Escolha title.
10--With the new wave of drier, varietal-labelled Vinho Verde building up the region’s reputation, it left some places to experimentation.
Sandeman Porto has a new look inside and out. The well-recognised brand has taken part of the new ‘Clear bottle’ trend meant to make the tawny category of port popular again. The clear bottles show the amazing color range of the delicately aged tawnies as well as the evolution of these colors. This category has always been the strong point of the Brand and needs to be put forward. Port wines are not especially in a good state right now. Customers tend to unfairly consider them as out-dated or untrendy. Which isa shame as Good quality Port would speak for itself, if only allowed to.
This is not the only change towards innovation since Sandeman have joined the group SoGrape along names such as House Feirreirinha and Offley in 2002. The House of Sandeman is now a complete experience for visitor in Vila Nova de Gaia. Besides the usual and very interesting Cellar visits, tastings and shop, a whole new line of services is being developed at the very central lodge. Collaboration with the independence collective hospitality group has helped in providing lodging, the George restaurant upstairs as well as the terrace with a direct Douro view and the mobile bar with a menu dedicated to amazing Port cocktails. The house of Sandeman can now be seen as the full experience package. By the way, Port cocktails is the new best thing in the world, spread the word and the love. 📷: Michael Mcduff

Ever since Ramos Pinto was established, in 1880, it has remained an independent family-run organisation and has maintained a noteworthy policy of self-supply and ongoing technical and technological research. For example, it was a pioneer in the study of Portuguese grape varieties, viticulture in the Douro region, as well as in winemaking and the mixing of grapes from different estates.

#vinorosso 🍷 #vinoitaliano#vinotoscano#vinolovers#carpineto#winelover
