Day 190 - first day in Roma!
Ticking most of the free tourist places off in a wander around the beautiful streets.
The Spanish Steps were crazy busy with people crammed into the shady spots, so we snuck back in the morning for some less jam-packed photos. Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi
(Fountain of the four rivers) is a beautiful fountain designed by Bernini right in front of the Sant’Agnese in Agone Church, designed by Borromini. Urban legend says that the figure looking on to the church is recoiling in horror from having to look at such horrid work. Such was their rivalry! Both absolute beauties though.
The Trevi Fountain was absolutely FULL to the brim with tourists and selfie sticks. Such a beautiful and impressive fountain though. To escape the crowds and hot sun we delved into the lovely gardens surrounding Villa Borghese.
The Pantheon capped off the day just before closing time, the sun coming through at quite an angle. The crowds were still busy though, so can’t imagine how busy it would have been earlier in the day. But the building is super impressive. It was the biggest dome in the world for over 1000 years. Despite the crowds, it remains a serene place watching the sun beam softly onto the walls. Such a busy day in Rome, but we’ve hardly even scratched the surface! Stay tuned.
