“Yeah, it’s just, like, all these buttons hurt my fingers. Ya know?” 🌱🌱🌱 in 1874, Frederick Sandys painted this peachy portrait of his sister, Mary Emma Jones (née Sandys). ▫️▫️▫️Emma was also an excellent painter and a member of the Pre-Raphaelite “Brotherhood.” Emma created mainly portraits in both oil and chalk of children and of young women. She often outfitted her subjects in period or medieval clothing, against backgrounds of brightly coloured flowers. 💐💐💐 #portraitpainting #oilpainting #antiquepainting #portrait #portraiture #preraphaelitepainting #preraphaelite #preraphaelites #preraphaelitebrotherhood #preraphaeliteart #fredericksandys #meninart #meninarthistory #preraphaelitewomen #preraphaelitestyle #victorianart #victorianwomen #nineteenthcenturyart #preraphaelitesisterhood #emmasandys #womeninart #womeninarthistory #womanpainters

Meet Myrtle Corbin, the “Four-Legged Girl from Texas” at http://btnz.us/texas

Since adding a rectangular press to my button/magnet making arsenal a few months back, I’ve been sifting through my antique photograph collection in search of interesting images to press.

I’m an avid collector of antique photographs, and a few years ago I was lucky enough to find a real antique cabinet card of Myrtle Corbin at a Lancaster, PA flea market. I didn’t know who she was at the time, but knew this was one special photograph!

you forever, ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I have a profound love and appreciation for photographs (and artwork) that depict people who are holding/showing photos, portraits or other representations of those who were dear to their own hearts.
•

It is all too easy in this day and age of digital photos and social media to forget that once, not so very long ago, many people had but one or two images made of themselves in their whole life (and plenty had none at all - especially before the invention of photography). •
•
There were no home movies, no IG accounts teeming with selfies. There was human memory and love, which then as now, strove to ensure that those who had passed or were perhaps living far away did not fade entirely from recollection.
•
•
As such, some people, including this lovely pair of women, chose to be photographed with images of those they cared deeply for (in this instance, we don't actually see photographs or drawings of their loved ones, but instead each lady holds what appears to be a small photo album - much like the one I included in this image - that we can assume held pictures of those they adored). It was a touching, almost hauntingly innocent act. A way to bring two (or more) individuals together again - if only via a photograph. 🖤

This is Phyllis Broughton (1862-1926), a music hall performer and Gaiety Girl.
.
In 1889, Phyllis cancelled her engagement to wealthy colliery owner John Hedley by telegram. He was devastated; he'd even had a house, Longcroft, specially built and furnished for them both to live in once they were married. Phyllis had called off the engagement to accept a proposal of marriage from Henry Wellesley, Viscount Dangan and heir to Earl Cowley. Unfortunately for Phyllis, Henry jilted her. She never went back to John and later married another man.
.
But John hadn't given up hope that Phyllis would return. He kept Longcroft on for the next fifty years, empty but maintained in perfect condition with a faithful skeleton staff. Every week John would send Phyllis a basket of fruit and flowers from its gardens. John never married. Upon his death his will left everything he had to her, as proof of his lifetime of devotion. Phyllis had predeceased John by 11 years, but he never changed his will. He died in a room decorated with hundreds upon hundreds of photographs of Phyllis in her music hall heyday. John's was the ultimate case of unrelenting idealistic obsession and an absolutely fascinating story.
.
I've just finished work on a big piece of writing today, and am now researching the incredible women of the Victorian/Edwardian music halls for one of my next projects. Remarkable as these women's stories were, after reading about Phyllis's life, I'd actually love to know more about John now!

Perfect Woman by William Wordsworth: “She was a phantom of delight
When first she gleam'd upon my sight;
A lovely apparition, sent
To be a moment's ornament;
Her eyes as stars of twilight fair;
Like twilight's, too, her dusky hair;
But all things else about her drawn
From May-time and the cheerful dawn;
A dancing shape, an image gay,
To haunt, to startle, and waylay.

I saw her upon nearer view,
A Spirit, yet a Woman too!
Her household motions light and free,
And steps of virgin liberty;
A countenance in which did meet
Sweet records, promises as sweet;
A creature not too bright or good
For human nature's daily food;
For transient sorrows, simple wiles,
Praise, blame, love, kisses, tears, and smiles.

And now I see with eye serene
The very pulse of the machine;
A being breathing thoughtful breath,
A traveller between life and death;
The reason firm, the temperate will,
Endurance, foresight, strength, and skill;
A perfect Woman, nobly plann’d,
To warn, to comfort, and command;
And yet a Spirit still, and bright
With something of angelic light.” ~ 1st Image is of Great Grand Aunt Sybil, 2nd is from her Grandmother’s scrapbook. #irishwomen #victorianwomen #scrapbooking #wordsworth #ieversfamilyphotos #perfectwoman

At long last, the final instalment of Emma’s story is up on the blog (link in bio).
I started this on International Women’s Day and I’m finishing it in Black History Month. There’s a very good link in there to a Barnardo’s Black History Month feature which I hope you find interesting too.
I’ve really enjoyed writing about Emma. I’m not a trained historian, I’m not a trained writer, I didn’t even know if anyone would read the first part when I first started writing her story.
She wasn’t famous and she didn’t change the world, but Dya know what the world is made up of ordinary people just like Emma, just like you and me.
Special thanks to @mrjake1992 who has spent an inordinate amount of time in cemeteries with me over the years like a right pair of goths and brought me coffees in the library when I’ve been desperately searching through records before kicking out time. Thanks pal ❤️
And thank you to everyone who’s messaged me and commented on Emma’s story so far, I’ve been really overwhelmed.
Here’s how it ends.......

Let’s say you’re into politics. Maybe you have anxiety, like sex, like women, read in your spare time, or don’t get along with your family. Maybe you’re abused, grieving, or just have bad asthma. These and dozens of other reasons were given for the admission of women to mental asylums in the UK, Ireland, and the US between 1864 and 1889. If men wanted to do away with an inconvenient woman, asylums were a convenient way to make them disappear. Women could be admitted for almost any reason. Once there, they suffered unspeakable abuse. Today on #dirtysexyhistory, we are thrilled to welcome Emma Rose Millar, author of Delirium, with a truly horrifying post. Check it out at goo.gl/3nq8kc

Inspirational women October.

Victorian heroines

The highest paid job for a women in the 1800s was prostitution.

Usually women of this era had limited rights, as it was even before the womens suffrage movement. You were owned by your husband, seen as only cleaner or cook and majorly limited.
Prostitues, at least had some freedom, which is why it was so appealing as a job.
Women owned and ran there own businesses, they took rich gentleman's money and liased with the wealthiest and most powerful of society. These were women more liberated than limited.

Although a very dangerous job, it was one of the only professions whereby a women could gain an education and earn her own money. Brothels were also hardly ever prosecuted, although majorily frowned apon by the era. "Fallen women" were disapproved of by the oppressive establishment. However, the same establishment would be found in these brothels night after night. Herself and her trade.

Exhausted. My recreation of Ramon Casas's After The Ball. 19th century paintings are teeming with women reclined on couches, devans, beds, often with a book, taking a nap, tired, or in a general ennui often resembling a dark, half-dead look in billowy gowns. I have a favorite article in The Paris Review where there is a list of occasions in Oscar Wilde's works where people are 'flinging' themselves to rest. .

As it's #Victober I thought I'd pick up East Lynne by Ellen Wood (not Henry Wood as the cover suggests!). I'm only a few chapters in but so far so good.
As it's #Victober  I thought I'd pick up East Lynne by Ellen Wood (not Henry Wood as the cover suggests!). I'm only a few chapters in but so far so good.
I started the story of Emma on International Women’s Day this year, initially intending for it just to be a little bit of working class history about an ordinary woman.
It ended up sprawling into four parts and having me lie awake at night racking my brains over it.
This week I’ll be posting the final instalment of Emma’s story during Black History Month and I hope it goes some way to shedding some light on life in Victorian Liverpool for a woman of colour.
Although history books and archives can’t tell you how someone felt, I’ve always given a lot of thought to Emma’s sense of self, and her identity.
In Part One we found out about racially aggravated attacks in her neighbourhood.
In Part Two we learned that she was probably bi-racial.
In Part Three her antics left us wondering how easily she might have got into trouble and whether she ‘stood out’ living in a majority Irish community.
In Part Four I’m going to tell you about her family - my family - and leave you to decide whether things might have been different for her if she had been born white.
Of course we’ll never know; instead I’ll tell her story as it is. The good, the bad, and the uncomfortable.
For some more working class history from Liverpool check out a new post in @scottiepressnewspaper and for some wonderful tales of women of colour this Black History Month check out @thefemcyclopediapodcast

Lingering at Great Great Aunt Amy’s dressing table, examining the scar over my eye, I picked up a book I bought from Oxfam years ago for my eldest daughter. It’s full of recipes to achieve eternal youth such as living entirely on a diet of oranges like a famous beauty at the Court of Louis-Philippe ‘who at 84 years of age still had brilliant eyes and the fresh skin of a young girl’ and the 85-year old Maréchale Davout who ‘never used anything but rain water for washing her face’.
This is an American translation from the French of a prolific author whose ‘nom de plume’ was Baronne Staffe, actually Blanche-Augustine-Angèle Soyer (1843-1911) who wrote guides to absolutely everything from table manners to how to win your man. Equally interesting though is the translator, Harriet Hubbard Ayer (1849-1903) who rescued her family fortunes by forming a cosmetics company after her husband went bankrupt to the tune of $2,000,000 in 1883. I smelt a rat while reading this ‘translation’ as she keeps mentioning a miracle cream called ‘Récamier’ and, lo and behold this is the cream that she marketed and claimed had come from an ancient and secret recipe of the Récamier family. The Boston Journal of Health’s verdict was ‘(Ayer’s (Mrs. Harriet Hubbard) Recamier Balm...comes in a cheap glass flask, tied with a bit of ribbon and filled with water; contains a white powder—the oxide of zinc—and corrosive sublimate. This preparation is sold for $1.50. It costs, at most, to make it, ten cents'. (Highly poisonous apparently). They also examined her elixir of youth, Harriet Hubbard Ayer’s ‘Vita Nuova’ which was found to contain cocaine and 19.5% alcohol! Eventually her cosmetics empire collapsed, her family tried to lock her up in a loony bin but she got out took up lecturing and from 1896 wrote a regular beauty column for Joseph Pulitzer’s New York World newspaper, offering advice to women on the ‘laws of beauty’, later published as ‘Harriet Hubbard Ayer’s Book of Health and Beauty’ in 1902. The cosmetics business eh? Well thereby hangs many a tale...it’s rainwater and oranges for me💦

Trying something new. I've always wanted to paint Victorian women, and here's my first. "Bess in the Rose Garden" is the title to this one. I hope you like her! So here’s a funny thing. Not long after I’d started writing about Emma, my extended family member born in 1873, I happened to buy this book by Lucy Williams off Amazon.
It’s right up my street and is by a woman who I think studied in Liverpool and accessed lots of local records so has some good stories in about real life women from Liverpool as well as other areas.
Each chapter focusses on a different crime typically committed by women in this era and explores a few examples of historic cases.
So what a surprise when I had cause to message someone on one of the family history research sites, asking if they had any further info on a certain person we were both researching - she had already done her research and I was just trying to establish any family members.
It turned out to be the author of this book! She was researching women criminals, obvs, and had been studying the life and crimes of a women by the name of Mary Ann. One of her aliases was the same surname as our Emma, and to this day I still haven’t been able to totally discount her being related to her...

Really tho.
This speaks to me on so many levels - not least the hairline thing (have you SEEN my fod).
They used to say my Nana could start a fight in an empty house and they say that about me as well. Thoroughly unjust assessment of my multifaceted personality and all its charms if you ask me but I know I’ve got some streak of something in me.
When I do my family history not only is it like a giant entertaining geeky puzzle, but I also like to imagine them as people.
I talked this week on the blog about Emma (link in bio) and how, as I learned more about her life, I tended to fill in the blanks and project onto her a version of a person I felt comfortable with. I wanted to feel like I understood her life I suppose.
What’s the point in history if you’re not gonna learn from it, right?
I already know I come from a long line of bad bitches and this week I forgot myself and let someone make me feel a certain way over something trivial which is laughable.
I think I mentioned in part 3 of Emma (or maybe part 4 which is more or less finished and coming out soon) that we don’t have a wealth of photographs in my family. We didn’t have the money for photography. So I can’t go back in time very far visually but I do know what my great grandmother looked like who was born the same time as Emma, and I know that I am like her. I might not wear a pinny and a shawl but I know I am like her. I’ll write about her one day. It won’t be as long as Emma’s story, but it’ll be a little snapshot of women’s history and whether character traits really can be passed down through the generations 🤔
