November 11, 2018 marks the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I and the Poughkeepsie Public Library District seeks community participation in a craft project designed to commemorate the anniversary. The Library District’s goal is to display at least 125 handmade poppies that represent each of the lives of those Poughkeepsie and Dutchess County residents who died in service during World War I.
Participants are welcome to make a paper poppy beginning Tuesday, October 23 to be included in the display in the Ground Floor cases of the Adriance Memorial Library at 93 Market Street.
You can make your poppy at home using the instructions found on our website (https://poklib.org/community-poppy-project/) or use our craft station with provided materials located on the Ground floor of Adriance near the check out desk to craft your own poppy contribution. Please bring your poppy in by Tuesday, October 30. Each poppy will be tagged with the name of a local resident who lost their life during the war.
The display will run from Wednesday, Oct 31 – Tuesday, November 13, 2018 (with the exception of Sunday, November 11 and Monday, November 12 as the Library is closed in observance of Veteran’s Day). Dutchess County Historical Society has partnered with the Library District to provide images and displayed information to include in this commemorative display.

As Veterans day will be upon us in a few weeks, I thought this was an incredibly powerful message to share. For many of us, it may be hard to know what so many of our Veterans battle with once home. We may have seen the statistic #22 and find it hard to comprehend or hear about #ptsd but likely may not fully know how that effects someone. But what we can do, is take a moment to allow the message of this picture to soak in...we can pause before judging someone's actions...we can thank a stranger for their service. We can raise awareness, money and empathy. #veteransday#22nomore

First round of Ambassador interviews completed! 30 amazing women applied from across our great nation. These women are working hard making differences in our Veteran Community. .
They are spouses and caregivers to Wounded Veterans. They are mothers. They run non-profits. They lobby in Congress. They are professors. They volunteer often. They are public speakers. They have made sacrifices. They train service dogs. This list goes on and on. Most importantly each and everyone one of them is passionate to make a difference.
Moving to the second-round of the process. This is such a hard decision. We have narrowed it down to 11 canidates. All of the women are truly exceptional. .
What do you think the biggest needs that are currently unmet in our Veteran community? Tag a Veteran, spouse or caregiver you know! .
Our namesake William Canary was a #JamaicaPlain resident who while answering the call for his country during WW1, valiantly perished on Sept 12, 1918 in St. Mihiel France. We honor him and the centennial anniversary of his passing along with our #boston City Councilor @heymattomalley and the Commissioner Of Veterans Services @g.sterling this #veteransday . Please join us at 3pm at the flagpole in the square to mark the occasion and convene back at Canary Square immediately thereafter.

Safariland and some other companies are doing good work with this. Check it out.
Please visit lionheartedfilm.com for the full film, and short stories from 22 veterans. In combat armor protects, armor saves lives. When soldiers return from the war zone the armor is removed. But the weight is not lifted. The heaviness of the battlefield is still carried by the veteran. Unseen armor contains and confines their untold stories. As a tribute to veterans, and to honor their strength and courage on Veterans Day, the Lionhearted project was created. Through art, film, and the written word, Lionhearted gives a voice to 22 veterans and their experiences. What they have seen. What they have lost. How they are healing. || @safarilandgroup @northamericanrescue @blueforcegear @nationalveteransartmuseum
