Are you training a mechanism or an output? —————————————————————
Movements occur extremely fast in sport, in order to generate the most force possible in a short period of time, the athlete needs to remove slack out of the muscle as fast as possible. The reduction in 'muscle slack' (as popularized by Franz Bosch) is known as the early stage of rate of force development (RFD).
Counter movement jumps (CMJ) are great for high velocity training, but they don't train the 'mechanism' of early stage RFD. The CMJ has a longer duration than almost all movements in sport. This aids in pretensioning and reducing muscle slack with more time than would be ideal in competitive sports. Easy to miss without an understanding of underlying mechanisms.
A slower velocity movement, from a static start would train the early stage RFD better than a CMJ. Examples are the squat jump, seated box jump, etc.
The mechanisms vs outputs notion can be applied to all exercises. Eg., you want lower body strength? The squat is only an output...
Motor learning, motor unit recruitment, intra and inter-muscular coordination are the underlying mechanisms. This can be achieved via many outputs, such as squatting, deadlifting, lunging, etc.
"It is critical that coaches understand that outputs are merely products of many complex interactions. In order to obtain better outputs, these mechanisms need to be understood and trained."
Feet Elevated Pullover-
Here’s pullover variation that I got from @tony.comella that I thought is great for baseball players.
Being able to get the arms overhead (throwing) and in good position is important.
The pullover helps unlock and lengthen the lats, so the arms can get into the overhead position properly.
Core position also plays a big role in good positioning. Putting your feet up and posteriorly tilting your pelvis will help you stay out of extension when going overhead.
To execute properly, brace your abs and straighten your elbows. As you extend your arms, keep your core tight and don’t let your back come off the bench. Go back as far as you can keep good position.
Really focus on controlling the core and not letting yourself go into extension when going overhead. Just like when throwing, core control is very important to keeping everything aligned and keeping the shoulder moving correctly.
When done right, @dylandix33 couldn’t believe how challenging this was on his core and shoulders.
Give it a try and if you have any questions, let me know. •

Lepus europaeus 🐰 hiding in a "form"
European hare, also known as the brown hare, is a species of hare native to Europe and parts of Asia. It is among the largest hare species and is adapted to temperate, open country. Hares are herbivorous and feed mainly on grasses and herbs, supplementing these with twigs, buds, bark and field crops, particularly in winter. Their natural predators include large birds of prey, canids and felids. They rely on high-speed endurance running to escape from their enemies; having long, powerful limbs and large nostrils.
The fur colour is grizzled yellow-brown on the back; rufous on the shoulders, legs, neck and throat; white on the underside and black on the tail and ear tips. The fur on the back is typically longer and more curled than on the rest of the body. The European hare's fur does not turn completely white in the winter as is the case with some other members of the genus, although the sides of the head and base of the ears do develop white areas and the hip and rump region may gain some grey.
Generally nocturnal and shy in nature, hares change their behaviour in the spring, when they can be seen in broad daylight chasing one another around in fields. During this spring frenzy, they sometimes strike one another with their paws ("boxing"). This is usually not competition between males, but a female hitting a male, either to show she is not yet ready to mate or as a test of his determination.
The female nests in a depression on the surface of the ground rather than in a burrow, and the young are active as soon as they are born.
Litters may consist of three or four young and a female can bear three litters a year, with hares living for up to twelve years. The breeding season lasts from January to August.
