The vampire squid, despite its name, is actually not a squid at all. It is genetically similar to both octopuses and squid, but is different from both of them. It is also the only living member of Order Vampyromorphida. Like many deep sea cephalopods, vampire squid do not shoot ink. To deter predators and possible threats, it can almost turn itself inside out to expose spines, or fire a bioluminescent mucus from its arms.
Vampire squid feed on marine snow, or detritus floating in the water. Detritus is made of dead organic matter that has been shredded into particles.

Beware! The vampire squid is here to devour your...marine detritus? We squid you not! Despite its sinister name, the vampire squid is only a scavenger, feeding on the “marine snow” that floats throughout the water column. Instead of ejecting ink, this deep-sea dracula will squirt a bioluminescent mucus towards would-be predators if threatened. Talk about a sticky squiduation! This juvenile was spotted in the deep waters of #MontereyBay National Marine Sanctuary.

Celebrating #cephalopodawarenessdays in the library with this plate depicting Melanoteuthis lucena Joubin from a translation of one of Louis Joubin’s four monographs representing three decades of studies on cephalopods. This vampire squid was collected during a cruise on the Princesse Alice (1889), sketched by Mr. L Tinayre at the moment of capture 🙀 and later the plate was drawn.
If you already met my newer oc, Morgana the jellyfish head, or just call her jellyhead, meet her good friend Zakota, the Vampire squid.
I looked up what other creatures roaming around the sea and I spotted the vampire squid and it is beautiful, my goodness and sooo adorable~
I'm so glad on how he turned out
