On August 15, 1936, Jack Wilson (January 17, 1918 – March 10, 1956) won the Olympic bantamweight boxing silver medal for the U.S. vs. Ulderico Sergo of Italy, who won gold. He was born in Spencer, NC & as an 18 year old high school student in Cleveland, OH, worked as a shoeshine boy in his spare time. Nicknamed the “Brown Stringbean,” Wilson weighed 112 pounds & at 6’ tall towered over most of his opponents. In 1936, he won the Chicago Golden Gloves championship in front of 20,000 fans, won the NY Intercity Golden Gloves Championship and the National @AAUsports title in Cleveland. From August 10-15, 1936, medals were awarded in 8 Boxing weight classes at the #Berlin#Olympic Summer Games. Placing 2 rings in the arena + a regulation change forced boxers to be weighed before each match and at the start of the competition. For the 1st time, a record 5 African American boxers were chosen for the Games. Wilson went on to have a successful pro career, and was ranked world #2 lightweight by Ring Magazine in 1940, and #2 welterweight in 1941. When he defeated Tony Chavez on April 26, 1940, he became the first African-American boxer to fight a main event at Hollywood Legion Stadium.
1936 Olympic Boxing record by round: Rd 32: defeated Leonardo Gula (Argentina) on points/Rd 16: def. Alfredo Petrone (Uruguay)/QF: def. Oscar de Larrazabal (Philippines) on points/SF: def. Fidel Ortiz (Mexico) on points/F: lost to Ulderico Sergo (Italy) on points. Jack served as a @usarmy sergeant during WWII. On May 27, 1936, F.M. Davis, a Philadelphia Tribune reporter, wrote after the Olympic Boxing trials:
“Incidentally, as half of the U.S. Boxing team members come from this “inferior” race who are only one-tenth of the country’s total population, it should cause a slight reversal of thought on Negroes both here and abroad.” The popularity of the sport and novelty of 5 negro boxers rising to prominence in the Olympic Boxing ranks spurred 3 broadcasting companies to carry descriptions of the bouts: the Mutual (via @WGNnews) @NBC @CBStv @cityofcleveland @dngoldengloves @CHIGoldGloves @usaboxing #usaboxing#olympicboxing#goldengloves#ohio @ringtv @phillytrib Click link in bio for screening
