Last Thursday night, I was invited to a full dining experience at @kaipasifika and took with me a good friend Ivan @ivan_ckwan 😄 Kai Pasifika is located on the corner of Mt Eden road just before the road leads into Symonds Street. To start with, I had an Otai Smoothie alongside sweet chilli chicken wings with salad while Ivan enjoyed fried calamari with cucumber salad and aioli alongside a Just Stormy drink 🍹For our mains, we selected the Smoked Pork Belly for Ivan, the Cook Island style Goat Curry for myself and we shared the Braised Taro & Leaf Lamb which most of my fellow Pacific Islanders will know as Luau or Lusipi 🤤 Y’all know I love my luau and anything containing coconut 🥥 in it 😅 Now, dessert was just the cherry on top - I was conflicted between the Coconut 🥥 Tiramisu and the Chocolate Brownie eventually picking the Brownie which I’m so glad that I did. It was so moist & flavoursome, I enjoyed every bite 😍 Ivan’s pick for dessert was the Chef’s choice of the day Cheesecake which was a Mango Pineapple cheesecake 🍰 We had a great dining experience and enjoyed listening to music specifically from Polynesian music artists while dining in the restaurant. Ivan and I spent almost 3 hours at Kai Pasifika catching up on the year, enjoying our meals without rushing, learning more about Kai Pasifika & their Pledge Me Investment. Kai Pasifika is more than just a restaurant, the Pledge Me initiative provides opportunities to our young Maori and Pasifika youth in the business and the hospitality industry. The restaurant side of Kai Pasifika showcases Pacific foods and the Pledge Me investment then allows the business to give back to our Community. How awesome is that? It was great to meet the director of Kai Pasifika, Richard and listening to him speak about the vision of Kai Pasifika 🌺

📍COFFEE PEN, AUCKLAND
So much hype for this place! Owners are super nice and make great coffee☕️ (would be even better if they served in cups instead of paper cups.) Mexican chicken black rice was delicious. Rice was soft with a good chew and full of flavour. You get 3 drumsticks, but they were small. Banoffee was really fluffy and not overly sweet paired with chocolate shavings. Reuben sandwich was packed with ingredients. Loved the bread! Not sure if it’s homemade or bought from elsewhere 🤔Definitely will be back to try their other lunch specials and the matcha cheesecake soon! #twohonesttruths -B
Sometimes even the best thought out plans are unravelled by a momentary distraction. Even when we don't know what the distraction is! For those of us who live in a world that is unfamiliar with multitasking, and somehow seem forever vaccinated against the concept, I present the evidence of this beautiful photograph to illustrate my point. Our photo-shoots are planned weeks in advance in order to accommodate everyone's schedules. I have one job before every shoot: ONE JOB.... get the baking done, prep any auxiliary props, stay out of the way, and hand whatever is requested to whomever requests the handed item to be handled.... You get my point right? I leave the photography to the photographers and happily live in a blissful state of thinking up new flavour combos that will confuse people (but amuse me)....One job. ...Soooo, on the day we were to photograph cookie dough we also wanted to fresh-bake some cookies from the dough, slather the cookies in dark chocolate ganache, and squash something like ice cream or marshmallows in between the "please make sure that the cookies are golden brown" cookies. (...as per photographic requests in the outline for the day)... so into the portable on-site oven the dough doth did go.... and for some reason I then went walk-about... out of the room, out of the hallway, out of the universe pretty much..., and when I returned from my galaxyquest to do some handing of handable things to people, I had no clue that I had placed dough to bake. None whatsoever. Only the smell of char-coaled sugary goodness on a heating element snapped me back to the realm of "hey buddy, you're doing two tasks!".... The photographically trained surgeons somehow built a monument to all that is great about an unblemished bakery biscuit, and we all have them to thank for enjoyable chocolate cascades over well-tanned, crispy-with-a-chewy-centre cookies. ...And believe it or not, I have a point here: even when we might feel undone by a lapse of consciousness, it's our friends that come through and help us create something beautiful from it all. Kia ora ra.
Granola at @majortomcafe - the good: the vanilla Greek yogurt and peach brûlée are very yum. The bad: the almonds tasted super stale, and it threw the whole dish off. In addition to my usual pile of edible flowers left over on my plate, I had a pile of gross af almonds as well. Also, this dish is called “puffed buckwheat and almond granola”, but it’s maybe 5% buckwheat and 50% chia seed pudding so, for someone who isn’t huge on chia seed pudding, this was not a pleasant surprise. In the hierarchy of needs for restaurant food, fresh produce and accurate menu descriptions are at the base of the pyramid, and cute presentation and edible flowers for the gram are at the tip. These folks have got it upside down :( also does anyone know any brunch places where I can get porridge lol? Everybody seems to have taken it off their summer menu. Don’t tell me to make it at home please, that’s not what I asked (although @food_diary_nz has inspired me for toppings ideas)
