My strength training routine has become a constant and I love it! There’s nothing more satisfying than not only seeing the physical results of hard work in the gym, but feeling stronger in and out of the gym! I absolutely love my gym time. It’s time for me to unwind, move my body, challenge myself, and get creative! I love what adding in strength training has done to my yoga practice and how it has changed my perspective of functional movement in general. I now see Chaturanga as a push up, chair pose as a squat, and high lunge pose as regular lunges. It has helped me create my own style and inspired my yoga and movement teacher training, Functional Flow. I’m constantly picking up new ways to incorporate functional strength into yoga and ways to incorporate balance, mobility, and slower, smaller movements into strength training and fitness. When we can start to see all fitness and yoga as movement, we can really start to transform our mind and our body on and off the mat! 💪🏼💥💙🙏🏼

One of my biggest training goals is improving the strength of my lats. It is common for a lot of people, especially swimmers, to overuse/constantly activate their shoulders and traps. To prevent excessive shoulder use, try performing these exercises by keeping your shoulders relaxed and down to avoid shrugging. This is still something I am working on eliminating by performing these exercises.

1️⃣ Bent-Over Barbell Rows. (4x10). Try to touch the barbell to your chest on every rep. Using momentum is ok as long as you are still incorporating your lats and performing the motion properly. 
2️⃣ Seal Rows. (4x10). These are amazing for isolating lats because the bench makes it very difficult to use any momentum, meaning that this set up forces you to use your lats to get the bar up. 
3️⃣ Negative Pull-Ups. (4xAMRAP).* By going slower on the way down, you are increasing the amount of time your lats are under tension. This will make it easier to perform the same amount of pull-ups next time, and might even result in you improving your pull-up max! 😊😊😊.

I went into the workout planning to do back focused only, but I ended up incorporating all kinds of upper body exercises and it felt amazing. #1 rule you gotta listen to your body no matter what!! Push-ups are a great upper body exercise that allow for the scap to move freely in a pressing motion. Adding chains or bands are great ways to progress the exercise. Make sure to push your armpits away from the floor at the top to allow the scaps to protract slightly, and avoid letting the head fall towards the ground.

Some will say it's a cheater bench because of the shortened range of motion, not the case for me!

Wide bench is great for extra chest strength, but benching with more vertical forearms will increase the strength potential by letting arguably the most important bench press muscle, the triceps, do their part. 
I also arch, and am good at it. You don't barbel bench press for range of motion. Save that for dumbbells, machines, and cables. Your shoulders will thank you.

“What if”. We all have had those “what if” situations. We don’t know if we should do something in fear of the effects of those actions. I recently did something I’ve been holding in all summer. It wasn’t anything huge, it wasn’t going to change my life, but I hesitated for so long to go through with it. And I finally did it. Guess what? I didn’t die. The world didn’t implode on me. I don’t even know why I hesistated for so long knowing that it wasn’t somethjng that could have overwhelmingly terrible consequences. In fact, I only feel relieved after having it pent up inside me for months. •
So do what scares you. Don’t leave the “what if’s” begins untouched. Tell that person what you need to say to them. Pursue your passions. Let go of the things that may be holding back your life. Do it. No “what if’s”.
