Last night Max and I spent a few hours learning about setting up bands. Max made an interesting point that most videos he saw on Instagram with “accommodating resistance” looked like people had just thrown on random amounts of bands or chains without any thought behind it. He was certainly observing with accuracy. Accommodating resistance has a practical purpose when it comes to increasing speed strength and it has nothing to do with the dopamine hit that one receives relative to the number of likes their Instagram video manages to pull in.

It holds true in the weight room.

Quite often I see coaches and clients alike training to exhaustion and extreme fatigue as primary. Remember; just because progressive training tends to be challenging does not mean that challenging training is progressive.

Referencing a multitude of youtube videos from respected coaches, EliteFTS articles and Westside Articles while jotting notes down on a clipboard with pen and paper, yanking on bands from varying angles, anchoring set ups and positions with a fish scale (testing tension at different heights) we were able to learn quite a bit about this form of accommodating resistance and why it’s so effective.

Don’t just try shit because it looks cool. (Although I’ll admit banded bench presses and deadlifts do look cool). Rather experiment with and learn why things are practical and how you can execute them efficiently into your programing to yield a worthwhile return on investment.

I've never trained the whole upper body before but in recent weeks I'm getting a taste for it.

Pick 1 compound movement and 1 isolation movement for your Chest, Shoulders and Back and then an additional isolation movement for Biceps and Triceps.

Keep intensity really high but overall volume lower. For example only do 1 to 2 "top sets" per movement where you aim to move the most weight as possible for as many perfect reps and to total failure.

Take these rows for example. The reps stay as pretty as possible until we each reach failure, no momentum just strong lat contractions focused on dragging the elbow to the hip.

The journey is what I love the most about yoga, being mindful of so many small details while being pushed to the limits of physical discomfort; overcoming the distractions to go inward and remain attentive, to push forward even if by just one millimeter 😇

The first one here isn't in the PDF as it's a newer edition to my routine as of comp prep this year - absolutely LOVE frog pumps! My feedback for comp has been glutes & hamstrings. People have always commented on my quads & I had only ever really trained them. I didn't focus on hamstrings or booty at all until I decided last year that I wanted to step on stage. ⁣

The biggest changes I have made in order to really help target my glutes are:⁣
1️⃣ Warming up and activating my booty before training lower body to ensure that my quads/hammies don’t take over.⁣
2️⃣ Training lower body 3x per week - this allows me to really focus on different areas of my lower body as well as incorporating different rep ranges and exercises to target the muscles I want to build. Absolutely love compound lifts such as hip thrusts, dead lifts and sumo squats! 🔥 ⁣
