I seem to be attracted to unassuming stones. There is just something so wonderful about involving their inner beauty. Before and after of the comparison of cuts from the same slab. This picture doesn’t do justice to the polished stone in the right but it gives you a taste.

Doing the UnCovered concerts put on by The Musical Stage Company is a bit like Christmas for me - it's one of my favourite gigs of the year, playing great music with a stellar group of people (both onstage and off). I have been fortunate to be part of these concerts since the very first one 12(?) years ago, and have seen them expand from one night for a couple of hundred people to five nights in beautiful concert halls, four of which were sold out this year. These concerts and this company have been central to many links of my professional and personal life - I have met many people that I'm now fortunate to call good friends and trusted colleagues. Thanks to Jason Spetter for asking me way back when, to Mitchell Marcus for always asking me back, and to Reza Jacobs for an always-deepening friendship and musical collaboration. Special shout out too to Justin Gray and Anna Atkinson for being some of the most generous and talented musicians you could ever hope to make music with. I wish we could tour this show for a long time! Instead we have one final performance on Wednesday at the George Weston Recital Hall. Very grateful to get to do this crazy job for a living. •

“Story of a Curtain Uncovered”
Earlier today, this vintage dressing curtain laid against the wall in a corner of my laundry room; hidden behind some stacked boxes, an old guitar, and a lint bucket.
The 1940s, stand up dressing curtain was originally owned by my mother. She discovered it at an estate sale in up state New York many years ago. Antiquing and hunting for vintage, stand-out pieces was a hobby my mother shared with me and my sisters.
We eyed the curtain for years, hoping to be the one who’d receive the curtain when mom needed space for new finds. My mom finally handed it down to me when I moved into my first apartment. Back then I had used it to make an actual dressing corner in my once ginormous bedroom. Over the years I moved a few times, and each place was a little smaller than the last. So, the curtain eventually found it’s resting place among some storage in the laundry room.
My sister Grace was up visiting me this past September, and was helping me reorganize my laundry room when she spotted the curtain. She gasped, there was a squeal, and then she dramatically continued to whine, “OH ME GAWD, Saaarrraaaa! That’s not faaaiirrr!! You get evveerrryyythiiingggg!” Then as abruptly as she discovered it, she began to admit the reasons why I deserved the curtain. It was very unlike my sister Grace to back down from ownership this quickly. It was then I realized how mature we had become, and that we genuinely appreciated and respected one another. We continued to declutter my laundry room, though the curtain remained hidden in the corner; behind some stacked boxes, an old guitar, and a lint bucket.
I was loading dirty towels into the washer when out of the corner of my eye, a glow of light seemed to form around the old dressing curtain. I had this overwhelming feeling that it needed to be moved. So, I carried it upstairs, dusted it off, and now here it lies as a focal point in my living/dining room. It’s been almost a full month since Grace passed away at 28, and daily I find ways to remember her. She’d be happy to see the dressing curtain; uncovered.
