Ahhh the illusive notion of mastery, most of us chase it in one vocation or another but I think this book and it’s writer truly understand the steps one should take in order to attain an aspect of “self mastery”.
Most musicians I know including myself believe “mastery” comes from locking ones self in the “woodshed” (a practice room) for hours a day to rehearse our scales, chords, licks and rhythms but this book instead draws on the correlation between music and speech, much the same as Shinichi Suzuki’s method of teaching. Music like the language you speak should be internalised, truly integrated into your being to a level where you no longer ‘think’ about your actions... you just are your actions (ultra instinct for my dbz fans who know wassup 😂) . You rarely think when you find yourself immersed in a good conversation, you’re acting on a technique that you’ve been learning for years, much the same as you rarely think when your playing music at your best. You never felt inadequate listening to the people around you as a baby, hearing these strange sounds you didn’t know were called “words” and attempting to replicate them, you simply listened and spoke and before you knew it you were having a conversation... or “jamming” with those you met. Then ego settled in, comfort and stagnation and before you knew it you’d forgotten what it was like to learn and create with innocence. This book is not tailor made for only those of a musical disposition but anyone who seeks to understand the learning process and recapture that feeling of adventure that you knew the first time you played a piano or stepped into a ballet studio, picked up a hammer or wrote the title of your first essay. #learn#music#everything#mastery#book#victorwooten#themusiclesson#showing#knowledgeiseveryrhing#understanding#wisdom#rant#thereisnospoon#ultrainstinct
